DOB

edit

some person(s) keep changing her birth year. I am going with 1964, the same as Imdb. If you think it's not '64, please cite your authority. versen 14:58, 1 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Year of Birth authority: Joanne was in my class at school also Official UK BDM records show YOB as 1961. --81.179.66.5 15:30, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Unless you can provide an authoritative citation, your edits will be reverted, since the 1964 date is cited. Andy Mabbett 10:44, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Where is it cited as 1964?--81.178.233.134 13:27, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
On the IMDB link. Andy Mabbett 13:31, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Where do you think the IMDB gets there information from? From the 'star's' PR people I think.--81.178.233.134 14:31, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

As requested over two weeks ago: If you think it's not '64, please cite your authority. Andy Mabbett 14:38, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Andy I know it is 1961. Joanne started her secondary education at Bredbury Comprehensive in Sept 1972, the same time as I did. In the UK, except extremely gifted children, you start your secondary education at 11. If, as you cite she was born in 1964, then joanne would have been only 8 yrs old. I would also draw your attention to the Birth Deaths and Marriage records in the UK which also officialy record her YOB as 1961.--81.179.108.109 09:08, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

All of which is hearsay. Andy Mabbett 14:17, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

hearsay:- Rumour, gossip,. It wasn't a rumour that she was in the same class as me, someone didn't say 'hey there's Joanne Whalley, remember she was at our school, because we sat next to each other and strange as it may seem to you we got to know each others names. And even at that age she used to tell us about how she was going to be an actress. The official records held by the Salford recorder of BDM are not hearsay. What I would call hearsay is the 'fact' of this specific DOB on IMDB. But, if you are still not satisfied then I can do no more. However,as you seem so keen on this particular case why don't you, as I did, log on a Ancestral web site and look at their records of Births for Aug 1964 and Aug 1961.--81.179.108.109 15:09, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Changed DOB back to 1961. Who ever changed it back to 1964 cites another movie internet site as authority. As stated previously, who do you think provides actors details to these sites. Do you think they will contradict the details the actors provide them with, especialy their DOB. Citation is Salford Records Office of BMD Joanne Whalley 1961.81.179.79.201 15:17, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

So, you should add this citation to the article. The Salford Records Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages is authoritative, but I do not have access to it. Otherwise I would add the citation myself. Coyets 10:48, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's very likely, given the UK TV programmes she acted in during the 1970s that 1961 is her year of birth. 1964 would have made her a bit young for all those roles. Given the Salford Records Office state 1961 that should be good enough; that's her birth certificate after all. IMDB simply have it wrong, perhaps due to her or her agent, perhaps not. But Wikipedia should be better than just sticking doggedly to IMDB's data in the face of conflicting evidence. The Ancestral website lets members view those original birth certificate details. That some people here aren't a member and can't view the data shouldn't stop those that are and can correcting the data. The article can have an explanation of the disparity with IMDB and elsewhere. Perhaps her marriage certificate to Val Kilmer may be more publically accessible and that would be another reference as to her age, although she may already have been using 1964 by then. -- Ralph Corderoy (talk) 10:13, 12 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The birth certificate online starts to look like original research. How could you know for sure whether it's the Joanne Whalley you want and not some other? As for the marriage certificate, we'd need to know whether her age was verified by whatever office wrote it up. And as for IMDB, it's wrong to think that it would have the right year. IMDB does not cite a source for their information (illustrating clearly why we must), which is probably some PR firm with a vested interest in propagating whatever year they think will benefit their client, and rightly so. That's show biz. I think the article should read, "Joanne Whalley (born 25 August 19?? in Salford, Greater Manchester) ...". When you Google on ["Joane Whalley" born] you get mostly rip-offs of this article, so it matters what we put here.
Here's an exercise for someone with access to birth records: Go to the IMDb page for Ms Whalley, <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000695/>, and hit the button at the bottom that says "Update information". You will be taken to a series of screens that will let you select "birth date" for changing. At last you will be asked to "Please use the explanation form below to provide your source, ideally including the details of a publication or the URL of a page which confirms this date of birth." See whether you can get IMDb to change her date of birth that way. --Milkbreath (talk) 11:44, 12 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I would say she was born in 1961: "England & Wales Births" Ravenscroft32 (talk) 11:25, 5 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Guardian disagrees. Favonian (talk) 11:40, 5 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Which do you think carries more weight - The Guardian or official birth records? Remember Elisabeth Sladen? See her discussion page. Stars often shave years off their age. Also see above where somebody went to school with her. Also see this: http://boardreader.com/thread/1961_or_1964_birth_year_d20lX2tf0zl.html

There is non-subscription online access to birth records at FreeBMD.org.uk, which includes a scan of an official document. This is further evidence that her year of birth is 1961. Here is a direct link to her entry: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?r=223284803:0026&d=bmd_1455586220 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.1.228.249 (talk) 11:35, 9 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

As the previous commentator states, there is an official ONS registration record on FreeBMD listing the birth of a Joanne Whalley in Manchester between July-September 1961. https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?cite=QXkie4poRdY0PNfCh90b6A&scan=1

Salford City Council list her birthday as 25 August 1961 on their Famous Salfordians page. https://www.salford.gov.uk/people-communities-and-local-information/famous-salfordians/

And even IMDB now lists her birthday as August 25, 1961. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000695/

It's funny that imdb has 1961 listed as her year of birth when someone here in 2007 vehemently claimed that 1964 is correct because that's what imdb said. Well, imdb apparently fixed it too! Pink Floyd The Wall

edit

I was watching The Wall saw her name on the credits. After Looking up her Wiki page I noticed she wasn't listed as having been in that movie. I added it. -Cade Gregg, May 23 11:34pm —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.216.47.95 (talk) 04:34, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

BBC (disamb)

edit

There's another lady called Joanne Whalley, a reporter and producer for the BBC's Travel show. I spotted her name in the end credits and googled her to make sure it wasn't the actress having switched to a new career. ;) Of course the actress is much more famous but the BBC gal could become notable some day.
