Birthplace
editI agree with the recent IP here that in 1989 Leningrad was called Leningrad, and not Saint Petersburg, before the referendum of 12 June 1991. Unfortunately, all three sources give "Saint Petersburg, Russia." So I guess we'll have to stick with that or find better sources? Martinevans123 (talk) 20:34, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

- I'd leave it at Leningrad. Leningrad redirects to Saint Petersburg anyway, so if anyone clicks it it will take them to that page. Regarding the BBC, I think they use the current names of places that have been renamed (Myanmar for example) so they'll use Saint Petersburg because that's now its official name. I believe Wikipedia's policy is to use place names/locations in the context of the relevant time period, that's why Vladimir Putin's place of birth is listed as Leningrad as well.
