Kedarnath Musk Deer
editThe deer is an independent entity so deserves its own article. --Redtigerxyz Talk 14:01, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
- It is not an independent entity since it is notified as a national sanctuary by the title Kedarnath Wild Life Sanctuary only covering an area of 975 km2 (376.4 sq mi). It was established primarily to protect the endangered Himalayan Musk Deer but not declared as such. It is also recognised as an IUCN grade IV category (Managed Nature Reserve) sanctuary in the Biogeographical Province 2.38.12 (Himalayan Highlands). The text as in this article would generally be the same for the Musk Deer Sanctuary but in Uttarakhand Govt. records it is not registered as such. Hence, I would appreciate if the tag is removed. --Nvvchar (talk) 16:19, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
- Is the Kedarnath Musk Deer same as the Himalayan Musk Deer (Moschus leucogaster)? The article says "Moschus leucogaster with the synonym Moschus chrysogaster" Feeding habits of the animal and "The colour of the deer.." para indicate general information about the deer, and not about the sanctuary or the particular behaviour of the deer restricted to the sanctuary. This info can be moved to the deer article and can be considered an WP:UNDUE here. --Redtigerxyz Talk 13:08, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
^ Since the Kedarnath Wild Life Sanctuary has been declared as such due to the intense poaching of the Musk deer in the sanctuary, and is also called unofficially as the Musk Deer Sanctuary, information on the Musk deer as very briefly explained in the article is considered very relevant and not superflous but essential to the article's completeness. I, therefore, do not subscribe to the view that some part of it be considered [[WP:Undue]. --Nvvchar (talk) 15:10, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Close paraphrasing
editThe example i mentioned at DYK is this:
Source text:
"The tropical zone, which does not occur above 1,200m, is absent. The subtropical zone is represented mainly by chir pine Pinus roxburghii up to 2,000m. Euphorbia royleana occasionally occurs on dry, southern aspects up to 1,500m. Within the temperate zone occur ban Quercus incana (1,500-2,100m), moru Q. dilatata (2,130-2,750m) and karsu Q. semecarpifolia (2,500-3,300m) oak forests. Rhododendron arboreum often constitutes a second storey. Oak may be mixed with fir Abies pindrow at higher elevations (2,600-3,400m). The subalpine zone consists of birch Betula utilis (3,100-3,350m) with an understorey of Rhododendron campanulatum. Rhododendron extends into the alpine zone, from above the forest limit to 3,500m. The herb community of the subalpine and alpine meadows may be dominated by Danthonia cumminsii, which forms tussocks of grass over extensive areas. The flowering plants of Tungnath and Kedarnath are enumerated by Semwal and Gaur (1981) and Semwal (1984), respectively. Two sedges, Carex lacta and C. munda, previously known to occur only as far west as Nepal have been recorded from near Tungnath (Green, 1985)"
WP article text:
"However, the sanctuary does not have tropical zone, as this zone is generally reported below 1,200 m (3,900 ft). Chir pine Pinus roxburghii is the main subtropical zone's vegetation recorded up to 2,000 m (6,600 ft). In the dry southern slopes, Euphorbia royleana occur up to 1,500 m (4,900 ft). In the temperate zone, at different elevations, ban Quercus incana (1,500–2,100 m/4,900–6,900 ft), moru Q. dilatata (2,130–2,750 m/7,000–9,000 ft) and karsu Q. semecarpifolia (2,500-3,300m) oak forests have been reported. Rhododendron arboreum is generally seen at the second level. Oak combined with fir Abies pindrow are recorded at higher elevations (2,600–3,400 m/8,500–11,000 ft). The sub alpine zone consists of birch Betula utilis (3,100–3,350 m/10,000–11,000 ft) with an "understorey" of Rhododendron campanulata. Rhododendron extends into the alpine zone, from above the forest limit to 3,500 m (11,000 ft). At Tungnath, the flowering plants consisting of two sedges, Carex lacta and C. munda, have been reported. In the past, these were reported only in the far west region of Nepal."
There may be other cases in the article - this was just the first I picked up. An explanation of why text that is this close to the original can be a problem can be found at this essay: Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Briefly, even though the words have changed, it can still be a copyright infringement. In terms of style, I think there may be a little too much detailed info in the text as it stands. I hope i'll come back and help out at some stage. hamiltonstone (talk) 09:06, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
