Major issues with recent edit

edit

I think this article to the version in use until mid-November, as recent edits are utterly misleading.

  • Kore statues are NOT normally considered to represent Persephone/Kore or her attendants. It is, in fact, hotly disputed whom they depict, even whether they depict deities or mortals.
  • It is not clear that all were colourful, nor that their skin was always unpainted.
  • Lacking significant large-scale Minoan sculpture, there is no evidence that Archaic sculpture is derived from it. If there is an Egyptian influence on Greek Archaic art, is much more likely to be direct.
  • The "lady of Auxerre" is indeed famous, but it is also exceptional, belonging to the Daedalic style of Cretan art. Being untypical, it is not a good candidate for the best known kore. Textbooks almost always illustrate the Peplos kore (see below).
  • The Peplos (not Peplum) kore is not in Munich but in the Acropolis Museum at Athens.
  • The Munich reconstruction of the painted version of the peplos kore is a striking image, but perhaps we should also show an image of what korai look like now.
