Date of Janmashtami ?

When is Janmashtami ? Can someone confirm the date, please ? theholidayspot.com says August 26, but 123greetings.com says August 27. I am quite confused. -- PFHLai 20:16, 2005 August 24 (UTC)

According to Gaurabda Calendar, a Vaishnava calendar service by ISKCON, the date in 2005 is 26 August.--Shruti14 ^{talk • sign} 12:11, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Nichalp,

Do not move the page to that entitled just "Janmashtami" - - Krishna Janmashtami or Krishnaashtami are more correct terms, obviously; Janmashtami as referring to the birth of Krishna is a colloquialism that assumes that no other great person was ever born on an "Ashtami". In any case, the redirect from the "Janmashtami" page will ensure proper referencing from other pages -Anon

Deleting images

Hi everybody!

I propose deleting a few images off of this page.

1. There are already two images of a toddler dressed up as Krishna. One of them can be deleted.
2. The "statue of Krishna being carried across the river" and "traditional festive food..." image look very out of place in the article. Perhaps we can remove them all together or rearrange it to make it align with the part of the text that mentions it?

Improving the article

Hi @Chilicave,

I saw you've made some solid edits to the article and was wondering if you would be open to collaborating further to improve it. Currently, I think there is a lot of room to improve the writing in the article. Additionally, we could adjust the current sections/create new sections that would help encyclopedia readers learn more about Krishna Janmashtami. First off, thank you for your contributions to the Krishna Janmashtami article. I've taken notice of your edits and contemplated on reaching out to you for your help on improving this article. Looks like you beat me to it!

Here are a few ideas I have had on my mind:

1. Per MOS:LEAD, I'm unsure if there is a concise or clear way to rewrite this paragraph without taking away the importance of how the festival correlates with the Hindu calender --> "Krishna's birth is celebrated and observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in Shravana Masa (according to the amanta tradition) or Bhadrapada Masa (according to the purnimanta tradition). This overlaps with August or September of the Gregorian calendar."
2. Also, I've noticed that you've contributed to several temple articles. Perhaps you can add more content in relation to the specific rituals or celebrations that are associated with these temples and/or the sects that they are affiliated with?
3. The history of how long or how far back celebrations have taken place or when they were first penned down can be added.

Of course, these are just my ideas based off what I see in other festival articles. Let me know what you think, and also if you have any ideas for me. Chilicave (talk) 04:19, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Perfect!

1. I agree that it may be difficult to correct those sentences without removing the Hindu calendar dates. Since this article is focused on the birth and celebration of Krishna, the information about his birth should be kept. I referred to the Wikpedia article on Christmas, to form a basis on what would be appropriate - it may be helpful if you check it out as well.
2. I think that is a good idea - I can look into that

Hi @Chilicave,

I was doing some reading and came across: Krishna in History, Thought, and Culture: An Encyclopedia of the Hindu Lord of Many Names and within it, it says, "Balarama was a constant companion of Krishna in all the events of his life that took place in Vraja, Brindavan, and Dvarka. During their childhood in Vraja, Balarama was always with Krishna: they stole butter, chased calves, or played in the cow pens. During their young adult life in Mathura, Balarama and Krishna participated in numerous significant events together: a wrestling match in Mathura, education with the sage Sandipani, battles with Jarasandha and Kalayavana."

I think that because Balarama has been closely associated with Krishna since birth and many of the ways that individuals celebrate Janmashtami worldwide is to replicate incidents that Balarama and Krishna were both involved in, its appropriate to have a sentence or two on him. I had a look at the Krishna article to get a general idea from there and I did see Balarama mentioned a few times. Perhaps, there is a better way to rephrase the sentence? Maybe explicitly mention that they are in constant companionship? If I were a new reader and looked at this article, I would probably not understand the significance behind that sentence.
