Boycott

edit

I have removed a line concerning a current debate in Norway over the Kristin Halvorsen's saying she was in favour of a consumer boycot of Israel. I have not succeded doing this on the Norwegian Wiki, where it keeps coming back. I am of the definite opinion that this is a news event, not to be discussed in a encyclopedia article. I think the mentioning of this makes the article biased against Halvorsen. The reason being conservatives and neo liberals in Norway are eager to emphasize how wrong it was of a minister of finance to say something that her own government where not in favour of. This information in articles have often been added together with links to dated news articles, which in my opinion has nothing to do in Wikipedia. In the norwegian Wiki an article named "Norwegian Consumer Boycot of Israel" have even appeared. I have given up the norwegian Wiki due to these questions.

I'm of the same opinion in English as in Norwegian: For the time being this is interesting information regarding Halvorsen's political work. Of course there should be more on her earlier work as well, but that will come. History contains assembled news. Eventually the boycott issue may become a parenthesis that can be erased. I won't comment upon my political stand, nor yours, but I challenge you to add information instead of deleting. Even the comment that "conservatives and neo liberals in Norway emphasise how wrong it was of a minister to say something that her own government does not support" may qualify as encyclopedic if properly referenced and neutrally formulated. The following policies may or may not support your view or my view: Wikipedia is not a paper encyclopedia, and Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. I will restore the information for now, perhaps rephrase it a bit, and I ask you to not give up on Wikipedia due to other strong-minded contributors. --Eddi (Talk) 00:49, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ok Eddi. This are better arguments than the earlier you've come up with. I accept your views, and I actually tend to agree. I was very upset by all the conservative and neoliberal squabble surrounding this case. I't seems Aftenposten and other papers in Norway are running a campaign against the government, and I am so tired of hearing the neoliberals saying "AAhh. We live in a communist country. Uhuuu". If you know what I mean. I agree. This can be mentioned in the article until history progresses further, as I am shure it will do. (-:

Controversy

edit

I edited the newly added statement (by Jalapenos do exist) about the alleged shouts of "Death to Israel" during an anti-operation-cast-lead march that Halvorsen allegedly led. This was clearly POV and a massive majority of highly credible Norwegian media and people believe this to be outright wrong (as indicated by the attached sources).

I moved your comment down on this page because it is suppose to be cronilogical. Also, I copy edited the material about the demonstration because it made it sound like the subject of this article was shouting "death to the Jews" which I doubt anybody is reporting, but who knows, correct this if that was the case. Also, your comment says that she "allegedly" led? Is there a question as to whether she led this or is that just my misunderstanding? Anyways, this looks like it happened today or yesterday? Stay tuned :)--Tom (talk) 17:40, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
If you look at the screen grab here that the paper has, it implies that she was shouting death to the Jews. Wodge (talk) 20:09, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Here's the sentence: Numerous government officials decried Israel's actions in Gaza - including Minister of Finance Kristin Halvorsen, who led a march shouting, "Death to the Jews!" This must be some translation problem. Are you telling me that Halvorsen is being accused of yelling "Death to the Jews"?!? I can asure you that the J Post article did not imply that. Any paper running that better cover their asses it seems. Anyways, can we get some english language editions or more clarification from any friends in Norway :)? TIA --Tom (talk) 22:14, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's what happened. Have a look at the talk page for Antisemitic incidents during the 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza conflict and scroll down to the Norway section. I put a few links there. The JPost retraction link is there too. Wodge (talk) 22:44, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Tom: Thanks for the formatting tip. That was no translation problem, sadly, as the references show. However, following the detraction and the new article by JP, it might have become irrelevant to write much about this incident (which is now nearly a non-incident) in an article about Halvorsen? This is, after all, not at all what she is actually known for professionally and personally. I would suggest moving most of the description of this incident to create a criticism/controversy-section (with a Norway sub-section?) in the article about Jerusalem Post and possibly describe it in anti-semitism in Norway. Opinions? Btw, totally agree with the edits by you guys, looks better now. --Larssl (talk) 08:47, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
How about a new section on this page called Jerusalem Post Libel or something like that. I do think the incident is notable so we should have a brief mention of it. Wodge (talk) 10:02, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't add a section here or to the J Post. Again, I read the original story and it didn't say that she shouted the slur. I read the retraction, and they probably said what they said to cover their asses. Anyways, this is pretty minor and unless more develops, I would leave it out of the encyclopedia, this more tabloid fodder at this point. Anyways, Tom (talk) 15:23, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I posted the relevant sentence from JPost above. How exactly can you claim that it doesn't imply Halvorsen was doing the shouting? Wodge (talk) 21:10, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
There were two versions of the JPost article. The issue is dead. WP:GETOVERIT. Jalapenos do exist (talk) 22:24, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
So an alleged increase in antisemitism is notable and has a whole article devoted to it. Yet newspapers printing fallacious stories to whip up hysteria about antisemitism isn't? And by the way there were three articles. The first said she shouted the chant. The second said she was in a march where somebody else had shouted it. And last but not least, was Jpost's retraction which grudgingly admitted there was no chanting. Wodge (talk) 23:19, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

(outdent) Wikipedia is not the news. If this delevops into something, maybe add back in. Undue weight, relevance, more related to the J post if anything. Anyways, if other editors join in, then maybe. Anyways, Tom (talk) 03:17, 2 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
