Request to remove "Advert" banner
editIn March 2022, this page received an "Advert" banner, although the text at the time seemed neutral and non-promotional. Since then, it has undergone further edits and remains rated C-class on the content assessment scale for both the Film: Documentary and Electronic Music WikiProjects. The article has also been translated into over 10 languages since its inception in 2014—most of which, admittedly, I don’t understand. :)
I’ve recently updated the English version to make it even more neutral, unbiased, and up-to-date. Could we consider removing the banner? Is there any additional process required beyond removing the template tag if it’s no longer applicable, per the guidelines?

- Despite my requests for input here and in the relevant WikiProjects, there has been no further response or objections. In light of additional and recent extensive updates and the lack of community input, I am proceeding with the removal of the "AD" template as per the recommendations:
- - "the discussion is dormant, and there is no other support for the template"
- - "the issue has been adequately addressed"
- - "boldly edit"
- If there are any concerns or suggestions for further refinement, I encourage feedback here on the article's Talk page to maintain clarity and context. Jean Yves Martin (talk) 12:35, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
How to address the COI issue?
editThere’s a COI issue related to a single edit made in July 2014 by the film's director, who contributed a fairly balanced version at the time—10 years and over 100 edits ago. Even then, the text aligned with the sources and critics' assessments.
Since then, he hasn’t made further edits, nor contributed to any of the other language versions of the article. The film has quite a following, and similar pages have been created in multiple countries by other editors. From what I’ve seen on the talk pages, this seems more like a case of miscommunication than ill intent, especially given the rarity of cinematic material on underground electronic music and dub techno.
Given the film’s modest budget, its non-commercial nature, and the director’s background as a photojournalist—focused on informing rather than promoting—I doubt any deliberate wrongdoing. He may have misunderstood some of Wikipedia's policies, as he received several well-meaning but cryptic messages in 2022—full of internal acronyms and terms that might have been clear to insiders, but labyrinthine to an outsider. Since then, he hasn't edited or replied. Knowing how creative people (and Russians!) can be, we might have unintentionally discouraged a valuable contributor.
What’s the best way to proceed? Should I reach out to him via email to explain how to properly declare a COI, hoping for a response despite the industry's busy nature? Or should I update his dormant user page myself and place a COI tag?
Also, 10 years later, the current text has evolved significantly from the original, with little left unchanged.
Jean Yves Martin (talk) 13:28, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- E-mailed, as per above. The filmmaker subsequently has placed a UserboxCOI template on their user page as per the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest guidelines, which recommend users "to self-declare on their own Userpages those articles with which they have a conflict of interest".
- As there has been no response here on the article’s Talk page, nor in the related WikiProject Electronic Music and WikiProject Soviet and post-Soviet Cinema task force / WikiProject Film) discussions, I will proceed per the guideline to "boldly edit" and in line with Help:Maintenance template removal: "the discussion is dormant, and there is no other support for the template."
- Since "the issue has been adequately addressed", I am removing the COI template.
- Please feel free to comment here on the Talk page. If necessary, you may also reach out on my user page, though discussion on the article's Talk page is preferred for context. Jean Yves Martin (talk) 12:02, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
