The Cowboy Wally Show
editI've had this graphic novel since 1992, so I think the copyright date of 1996 in the bibliography must be incorrect. Unfortunately, my copy is packed in a box where I can't get at it. --Geenius at Wrok (talk) 19:07, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- A used copy for sale at Amazon.com gives 1988 as the year of the first edition, as does the the Baker entry at Read Yourself Raw. I'll make the change accordingly. --Tenebrae (talk) 02:50, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Edits that blatantly violate policies/guidelines
editThe editor Peace is contagious, who had blanket-reverted my edits, has reinserted a slew of his own edits that blatantly violate many Wikipedia policies and guidelines in an attempt to turns this piece into fannish and promotional hype. Here are three examples of his edits:
- 2010: Kyle has secured a deal w/ Shaq O'Neil to create a "Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids" like web-cartoon.
- "Special Forces" was the NY Times reviewed & praised, semi-satirical tale of special education students, tricked into US Military service & sent off to 'post-Saddam' Iraq. Kyle satirized the ...
and
- 2000 saw Kyle's slap-stick, child-like style of humour create a debacle by corporate concern over 'responsible art'. ...
...the beginning of a long, uncited POV essay.
Aside from the grammatical, punctuation and style concerns, the tone of this piece makes it read like press release, and violates policies about promotional edits. I will post a note on this editor's page, but judging from his blanket reversion of another editor's work in order to add his highly fannish, non-encyclopedic, edits, I imagine this might require admin intervention. Obviously, I hope not. --Tenebrae (talk) 00:47, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- Following belligerence and other uncivil conduct by User:Peace is contagious, and his willful disregard of Wikipedia policies and guidelines as outlined on his talk page, a request for admin intervention has been placed at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard#Kyle Baker. --Tenebrae (talk) 15:27, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Baker Hosted Harvey Awards 3Xs
edit...due to his wit, he was chosen to host 3Xs.
I'm not sure how to 'prove' this, but when I was writing term papers in high school & college. 'common knowledge' did not have to be foot-noted. I would imagine this is common knowledge to those in the comics field, however not to those outside there-of.
I fear Wikipedic litigation, as a certain unamed user has an anal-retentive penchant for verifying the most mundane of facts, due to his near-orgasmic love of comic books (q.v.). Peace is contagious (talk) 11:03, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- Please comment on content and not contributors, wikipedia take WP:NPA such comments about other editors very seriously and users can and will have their editing privileges withdrawn for such violations. Off2riorob (talk) 12:12, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- What Peace is contagious calls "common knowledge" is his own personal opinion. He has even said "true opinion is fact." But it's opinion — by definition it's not fact, and someone may have a different opinion. In any case, his claims need to be footnoted, just like everyone else's.
- This personally abusive editor, who says he is a family friend of the subject, is being promotional and WP:COI and should be banned from editing this article. --Tenebrae (talk) 13:44, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
btw "True opinion is fact." is an academic statement, take any college level 'Intro to Logic' course. Evolution is a 'fact' & sadly in today's age (in the public eye) often enuf described as an 'opinion'. In the end I would say evolution is common knowledge. Such doubt begs epistemological parameters, but I concede this point may be a red-herring.
May I mention that Kyle hosted the Harvey Awards 3Xs ? due to his wit & personality' ? (or 'penchant for telling 'jokes' (q.v.) that others SEEMED (q.v.) to be amused by, due to repeated spasms* of their diaphragm. *although the spasms could have been due to the food served theoretically & merely a synchronistic anomaly in time & space ) ? I OBVIOUSLY do not have the knowledge of other editors, like Tenebrae, on comics, he pro'bly knows where to verify this. Peace is contagious (talk) 20:50, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
Eriq Lasalle - 'motion picture' claim
editIf u look in the HC copy of Truth, u will see 1 panel (aprox. 2/3 of the way thru the tale) w/ a drawn background of a # of pictures on a wall, BUT 1 is an actual photo of Kyle standing next to Eriq. I asked Cheryl Baker why this was (photo) was present ...& she explained Eriq sought to make Truth into a film. Peace is contagious (talk) 12:07, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- That's a personal-opinion claim. There is no way to prove he really spoke to the sister, no way to prove the sister's statement was accurate, and he refuses to cite a published reliable source to make his claim about an outside public figure. This is just hearsay and an OR claim. --Tenebrae (talk) 13:46, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Today's edits
editThe abusive and insulting, name-calling editor Peace is contagious has been blocked for 24 hours for his disruptive, multiple-policy-violating edits. I've reverted three that he made right before his 3RR block went into effect. First, the list of notable works isn't meant to be an huge laundry list, but two or three of the most significant.
Second, it is by no means a hard-and-fast fact that Baker is particularly known for his contributions to graphic novels -- certainly not in comparison with Will Eisner (A Contract with God), Gil Kane (Blackmark), McGregor/Gulacy (Sabre), Steranko (Red Tide), Arnold Drake/Lesslie Waller/Matt Baker (It Rhymes with Lust), or a half-dozen other milestone pioneers. Baker is one more contemporary writer-artist making graphic novels, no more, no less.
Finally, I've removed this non-MOS, poorly written and uncited paragraph, with a claim of a "favorable" (POV) review by the NY Times — with no footnote to support this claim.
- 2009: "Special Forces" a semi-satirical tale of special education students, tricked into US Military service & sent off to 'post-Saddam' Iraq. Baker satirized the weapons of mass destruction scare by locating them in a bunker beneath an oil refinery. It received a favorable review by the NY Times.
This was followed by a line that read as if it were a resume entry. I'm beginning to fear that Pic is unwilling or even perhaps unable be unable to understand the policies that I've been bluelinking to. Instead, he keeps resorting to reversion of his policy/guideline-breaking edits and name-calling. --Tenebrae (talk) 13:57, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
2008 Harvey Host
editAdded link, hopefully I got this right. Peace is contagious (talk) 00:11, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
Removal of "I lie all the time"
edit...not sure what such a " has to do w/ anything significant, "I eat all the time" would be just as frivolous. Is Baker known as a 'notorious liar' ? Even potentially libelous as taken out of context. I would even say it's 'vandalism'...if there was 'intent' to be libelous. Peace is contagious (talk) 00:10, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- See User talk:Peace is contagious for other editors' views on this quote, and a conflict of interest issue in which it appears this user is the subject himself, attempting to whitewash and spin. --Tenebrae (talk) 14:15, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- Why would Kyle Baker, or any gainfully employed, not to mention extremely busy person be doing editting Wikipedia. Which almost leads me to think u have 'fannish' delusions or a lack of touch with deductive abilities. If I were Kyle why would I not supply the necessary credentials for the photo I posted 3 days ago ? Think about that (sigh) Peace is contagious (talk) 15:39, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- Please stop making personal attacks against other Wikipedia editors. Yworo (talk) 15:43, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
Moved Baker's criticisms of Hollywood & mags " to top
editThe " seems to be indicative of Baker's over-all attitude, although could represent his attitude in his later career only. Just didn't seem like the appropriate place where it was (in a list of 'Later' works. maybe a new section is needed. Peace is contagious (talk) 00:10, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- "Psychoanalysis"? Really?
- As I've said on your talk page, you are removing things and trying to put spin on things because you're acquainted with the subject and a friend of the family. You are not an objective, disinterested editor. If you have a problem in dealing with an objective, disinterested editor, then please avail yourself of one of the mediation options I've suggested on your talk page. Your continued disruptive edits will result in admin intervention. --Tenebrae (talk) 02:03, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
John M Baker
editKyle's Father died in ~ 2003, in Nyack,NY?, so an obituary should be available somewhere online, maybe. And that would verify that John was a Pratt grad w/ BA/BS in Graphic Art
- He's not the subject of the article so why does it matter? Yworo (talk) 15:58, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- It's important for epistemological studies. Barry Bonds father was MLB HOFer Bobby Bonds. Mozart's father was a court violinist. Peace is contagious (talk) 20:18, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- I, for one, can certainly go along with Peace is contagious on this. We just need a citation. I'll search online. Maybe the local Nyack newspaper has something. --Tenebrae (talk) 21:22, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- So far: There was nothing in the archives of the regional daily newspaper The Journal News. And the monthly newspaper the Nyack Villager only makes a PDF of the current issue available online. But maybe we don't need an obit — maybe Kayle Baker mentioned his father's art background in an interview. --Tenebrae (talk) 21:30, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
John was more of a free-lance (graphic) artist, often living hand-to-mouth, than an 'art-director' @ a company (or two). He did a bit of work for his church, which was directly across the street from his home (in W. Nyack). News-papers often put 'polite' spin on obit & other stories. Peace is contagious (talk) 00:53, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
I believe that Eliz Smith-Baker's job as an AV director is pt and a '2nd' or retirement job over the past 10 yrs or so...I do not know her previous job. BUT of more interest, she is a descendant of (her Father James Smith Sr. - age 93 and) Lewis Adams, Tuskeegee Univ. founder! I'd imagine such records would be available thru some federal or state gov't birth records... Peace is contagious (talk) 01:04, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- The thing is, we can only cite what appears in reliable-source publications and websites. In terms of Baker's parents, the article cites The New York Times and a book about Kyle Baker that includes interviews with Baker. "Art director" is how those sources characterize him. The material you give above appears to be from ostensible personal knowledge — there's no way to tell if it's true — and cannot be used due to one of the core policies of Wikipedia: No original research.--Tenebrae (talk) 01:15, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
