Question(s) during GOCE edit

edit

Hey again, Jo-Jo Eumerus. Here is my question thread for this copy edit request:

In The lake, it seems like you are trying to say more than just "Death Valley is in California" since there is a reference, but I'm not sure what that is. Can you please expand on what you are trying to say here: Death Valley in turn lies in southeastern California. ? Or can this sentence be safely removed since the next talks about Death Valley being in CA? — Preceding unsigned comment added by gwendy (talkcontribs)

@Gwendy: Nah, I was not aiming at saying anything more. The lake did not extend into Nevada, so specifying CA makes sense. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 15:10, 17 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I can work with that!  gwendy (talk) 15:45, 17 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

A general note on spelling: I've been changing the spelling to American English since the lake existed in the US. If you have any strong objections just let me know! – gwendy (talk) 15:49, 17 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

I'm confused about the tense in this sentence in the Inflow section. The rest of the paragraph is in past tense and then this last one is present tense. The integration of the Mojave River into Death Valley is almost complete; once the basin of Lake Mojave has been filled completely to the altitude of its own spillway even under current conditions its waters will reach Death Valley. Could you confirm which tense is correct? – gwendy (talk) 13:05, 18 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Gwendy: The tense is deliberate; currently (late Holocene, 2017 AD) the Mojave River needs to fill the last vestiges of Lake Mojave before it can overflow. Once it has filled every basin from Afton Canyon to Death Valley with sediment, then the river system will be fully integrated. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 14:05, 18 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I am taking a look and making some straightforward copyedits as I go (please correct/revert me if I inadvertently change the meaning!). I'll jot questions/issues below: Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 12:18, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • Combine first and second sentences as they are a bit repetitive as is...why not, "Lake Manly was a pluvial lake in Death Valley, California, covering a surface area of 1,600 square kilometres (620 sq mi) during the so-called "Blackwelder stand"." - also link "Blackwelder stand" here.
Done, but "Blackwelder stand" is not a separate article - are intra-article links fine? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 17:01, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • If possible, avoid having the first 3 lead paras starting "Lake Manly.."
Done, there were alternative terms. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 17:01, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

The single sentence 4th para should be joined onto the 3rd.

Not sure about this ... may need some rewrite before it can be tacked on. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 17:01, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
How about something like, "Lake Manly and other lake systems in the Great Basin formed by a process of decreasing temperatures and thus decreasing evaporation as well as increased precipitation during the ice ages." or something similar....
Done. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 14:55, 16 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

*I'd combine first 2 sections into a single Discovery and naming section. Also combine single sentence paras :I think I got that one; I tend to construct paragraphs around a certain topic, not necessarily a certain length. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 17:01, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • Add Levi F. Noble's occupation as a descriptor/adjective. Ditto Gilbert.
Added these, I don't think an inline citation is needed for their job description. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 17:01, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • According to some evidence, a southeastward flowing river occupied northern Death Valley during the late Miocene - sounds vague. Describe the evidence
Explained a little more, using a rewording as the literal source text clast assemblages and facies within the 14–6 Ma Artists Drive Formation that are consistent with a northwest-to-southeast–flowing fluvial system during the late Miocene. is probably too technical. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 17:01, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • The occurrence of lizards of the Uma family - umm...Uma is a genus not a family...
Aye, fixed this. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 17:01, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Any info on any critters that appeared in the lake in 2005 when it reformed?
Didn't find anything... Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 17:01, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • FWIW, Earwigs tool looks ok.

Anyway, over to you. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 12:43, 15 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Mis-conversion of temperature difference

edit

I haven't done any editing of Wikipedia, and I don't know the process for making a correction. So, I'll just describe it here, and someone (if agreed) can either fix it, or tell me how.

In the climate section, there's a statement "...a temperature drop of about 10 °C (50 °F)...". Since that's a temperature difference, not an exact temperature, it should not have 32 added in the conversion. The correct temperature drop is 18 degrees Fahrenheit.

Thanks, GerryCallahan (talk) 16:56, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

English Spelling

edit

I'm sorry if I'm using bad grammar because I'm not an English native speaker. But I see a lot of non-American English in this article (even an American-related article). For example, using "kilometre" rather than "kilometer", etc. Also, this article favors metric units over U.S. customary units (the U.S. favors U.S. customary units). Can everyone explain this? 114.124.207.34 (talk) 08:19, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

It was written by someone (me) who isn't up on American English. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:42, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
