RULES FOR EDITING - MUST READ
editPlease be CONSERVATIVE when editing. The article is meant to read PROFESSIONALLY and portray explorers in a positive professional image. It is inappropriate to write about "cool stuff" a post "gets to carry" or do. If you KNOW it is common, add it in so it still fits with the national description of explorers, and so it does not hint of showing off or feeling overly important. If you need advice on how to word it, post here or do your best then leave a message here. It should take time, like when composting a police report or school essay. --AnthonyM83 (talk) 04:33, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
REQUEST FOR OPINIONS - Isn't BSA Exploring part of scouting?
editIn the article about collecting scout memorabila[1], a section includes links to related subjects. Law Enforcement Exploring[2] is an existing related Wikipedia article. Kintetsubuffalo believes it is not related to the subject of collecting scout emblems, and has repeatedly removed it. Since Law Enforcement Exploring is a formal part of BSA, and hundreds of unique emblems are used by the BSA LE explorer program, I believe it to be properly related and should be included for reference. Please provide opinions so that I may be guided.Patchbook 06:01, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Law enforcement Explorer programs generally prefer to distance themselves from the BSA, in my experience. Greenlead (talk) 04:50, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
Exploring was put under Learning for life due to some BSA policies that conflicted with public agency rules (ie discrimination on sexual orientation) BSA either lost the Government related agencies or create another Non Profit with modified policies to appease the agencies. So, to answer the question, it is technically not a BSA program, however, BSA stores sell the patches, pins, ect... Curtistucker (talk) 18:34, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Slogan?
editDoes anyone know the official slogan for the explorers? Areolop (talk) 23:56, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Merge
editRecommend merge with Exploring (Learning for Life). Half this article consists of links of a non-national nature. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 15:03, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Support or oppose:
OPPOSE MERGE - Law Enforcement Exploring has enough tenure and size to stand alone as a subject area.Patchbook 01:26, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
support merge-without the links, the article itself is a good subsection paragraph, but not a standalone article. Chris 22:23, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
no consensus removing merge. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 22:02, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Oppose I agree with Patchbook. Curtistucker (talk) 18:34, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Links
editThis article is of a national scope, therefore the links need to also be national. If one post link is allowed, then every one of the hundreds of posts with web sites must be allowed to have a link. Currently, the list of links is longer than the text of the article.
Alternatives:
- Work the links into the Scouting by state articles, preferably as references, not links.
- Move the links to the Open Directory Project and create one link to the list.
- Link to the SCOUTER Net Roster
See Gadget850:See Also and External links for my opinions on links (references included). --Gadget850 ( Ed) 13:20, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
Links redux
editThe long lists of links do not belong here perWikipedia:What Wikipedia is not: Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links. The one link to DMOZ provides more links than what were listed here. If you are interested in maintaining site links, then please register at DMOZ as an editor.
Please discuss any issues with this solution here. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 22:11, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
For awhile, the article only contained non-local links, aka sights of interest to explorers from any part of the country, such as an online forum for explorers to network or the official Law Enforcement Exploring website...Wouldn't these be appropriate? AnthonyM83 04:48, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- The official website is in the infobox. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 11:12, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Right, but what about other links of national interest? (PS Non-internet savvy people don't always know pictures like that will lead to AnthonyM83 (talk) 06:05, 17 November 2007 (UTC)links unless it's very obvious...)
Law Enforcement Explorer Section
editThis area needs to be closely monitored, as it has many people modifying it to what their individual post does or exaggerating contents to create a prestige factor. Appearing as wannabees is a big problem in LE Exploring, so editors must be careful not to convey that image. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AnthonyM83 (talk • contribs)
- I agree- the last set of major edits, starting on 16 June, added a lot of material that was not referenced and does not appear to apply universally to the program, and that editor has not contributed in over a month.. One problem is that there are no Explorers in the Scouting project (I was an Explorer in 1975, but it is very different now). I had been considering reverting the article. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 20:58, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- I'm an explorer currently and have been for several months now. I'm also the head moderator on a public safety forum with an emphasis on explorers and thus I am in constant contact with dozens of explorers around the country. I admit there may be a few things that I worded poorly and if I have time I'll go back and try and fix those; however I gurentee that nothing in there is false or exaggerated. Anymore questions or comments feel free to tell or ask me, but seriously, dont just redo this article because you think it sounds wrong based off your expeariances three decades ago. thekingbeav 02:01, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
-I'm doing a few more edits, for random stuff like how some agencies include a polygraph. I doubt someone can come up with a list of more than 3 agencies (if that) that administer polygraphs for entry. I really like the list of explorer activities and how it's explained in plain-speak. Academy's though don't just start in Winter and Summer (I think the explorer who wrote that is a San Francisco explorer...or other big city that does things similarly...you gotta spread out to national level, though
I don't know what was meant by them being sworn ...like they're police officers and explorers at the same time? or explorers are sworn in like civilian employees are, reading that oat about defending against enemies, domestic and otherwise etc. It implies they have actual LE arrest powers, so I'm removing it for now... I'm also doing grammar, punctuation stuff throughout to make it more professional.....Seriously, though I like whoever wrote the latest overall version...the explanations are good without seeming try-hard or wannabe even better than my version. thanks. AnthonyM83 04:13, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Post-Edit: I see now it was a combo of Gadget doing main content and Zack taking the whackerness out of it like arresting people. I wonder if it's by chance Zack who ran the old police explorers forum. Also, there are not hundreds of conferences each year...there are local, regional, national, etc, but not hundreds. -Anthony
Police Cadets
editDo you see any point to me creating an article about Police Cadets? As cadets are not part of the Learning for Life program, but are youth ages 16-21 who work/volunteer for Law Enforcement agencies, the most notable difference is that cadets do not have to adhere to Scout rules/regulations. Please let me know what you think? Tiptoety 22:53, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
- This article is about Explorers. If these police cadets are not Explorers, then they do not belong in this article. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 02:38, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, just Explorers and police cadets do pretty much the same thing, except they have different names, just checking to see what you thought.Tiptoety 03:07, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
- Gadget850's response is accurate. Police Cadets, also called Police Aids, are people who have similar interests in law enforcement as Explorers, but are significantly different. They are hired by an Agency, usually on a part-time basis, from what I understand, and perform mostly clerical duties. The main opponents to Police Cadets are the clerical unions that work for the agency. (note: this info is to the best of my understanding, may not be completely accurate) [Anonymous, 19 October 2007] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.30.171.181 (talk) 01:32, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
Looking into this, it appears that there are some youth groups like [[National Police Cadet Corps] and British Police Cadets. In the US, a police cadet is a trainee working towards becoming an officer. To my knowledge, LEL is the only nation-wide program like this, but there may be local programs. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 01:41, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think that is right, there are agency's that have "cadets" that do the same thing as "explorers", just look here. Correct me if i am wrong. Cheers! Tiptoety talk 06:43, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Police Cadet redirects to this article. It should be a disambig as there's also Police cadets in the United Kingdom and National Police Cadet Corps (Singapore).--92.78.102.252 (talk) 13:07, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
Uniform
editMuch of the material on uniforms is problematic. Since the uniform is usually determined by the sponsoring police department, there is no single description possible.--Gadget850 ( Ed) 22:55, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed, maybe the whole section should be removed. Tiptoety talk 06:44, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
I think that the uniform should be mentioned, as it is an important part of the program. It can be mentioned something like "Explorers generally wear a police type uniform to establish their position for pride and instant identification at events. These uniforms are often different than their sponsoring agencies to avoid misunderstanding with the public that they may be Police Officers." Curtistucker (talk) 15:06, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
- The only issue is that every agencies uniforms when it comes to explorers are very different and the type of equipment each explorer post carries/uses varies rather largely. Tiptoety talk 00:12, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Give up
editI am giving up on this article and removing it from my watchlist. This article should be a general overview of the program, but every editor that comes along is adding material from their own unique program. You guys can duke it out over what uniform you wear, what kind of training and the like. If your post carries equipment like chemical sprays that is banned by LfL rules, that is between you and LfL. [3] --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 15:53, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Gadget, you should stay. I try to come by and monitor when I can. People who obviously have no knowledge of national police exploring are using the article as a way to show off (why list the type of radio? As if its cool) I am removing the Authority section because it sounds like a 13 year old wrote it and makes it sound like you are showing off and creates a bad impression. Its written like a message board post. We are trying to create a professional article. AnthonyM83 (talk) 03:32, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
I'm going to take a more active role in this article again. I think we need to approach this from primarily a law enforcement point of view, rather than a Learning for Life viewpoint. Greenlead (talk) 04:55, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
Boy, this article is in rough shape (ie: the organization section), I have a lot of work to do. Anyone want to help? Greenlead (talk) 04:57, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- Im willing. Tiptoety talk 06:46, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
I would like to help, I am an Advisor of a Post and just let me know what needs to be done. I think you are all on the right track of what it should look like- keep it simple, yet informative. Curtistucker (talk) 16:24, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Northeast Regional Law Enforcement Educational Association
editIs there any point of mentioning the NERLEEA?
