Improvements

Would be good to have a photo from the rear (Porchester Terrace) like Mike Slocombe's. What is the façade made from - concrete? - and who owns and maintains it? Presumably the line section is now part of the Circle Line and the District Line between Paddington London Underground Station and Bayswater tube station. Open4D (talk) 15:14, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

The façade is indeed above the present-day Circle/District between Paddington and Bayswater. Re your other questions, I can't find exact info in Day, whether 1963, 1971 or 1979 edns, nor in Croome or Simpson, however I have read it somewhere, that:

• the Met. Rly had to purchase the houses that the two façades replaced;
• the façade ought to still be owned/maintained by LUL/TfL;
• it is not concrete, but the same material as the original houses.

There are photos - front and rear - in Simpson. These are credited to Railway Gazette, but the issue of publication is not stated. Redrose64 (talk) 16:32, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

23 and 24

I feel that we are slightly unclear on 23 and 24. It's like the information I would like is sort-of all there or implied (or perhaps in the comment above from a zillion years ago) but not clearly specified in the article. (Or I am missing the obvious and need put right?? That happens plenty too!) What I would love to see in the article is:

• When were the houses built? (Or, failing that, when was no. 22 built!?) Maybe c. 1855 per NHLE? At the moment we only say 1850s, and that only in a photo caption, not the body text.
• When was the railway built? We say 1860s – is an actual year known?
• Did they demolish 23 and 24 and then build a new structure? Or is what we see the original facades somehow supported to maintain their position but without demolishing?
• Are there any contemporary images or written accounts? I would have thought it was of public interest at the time, unless they kept it secret.

I'm sorry if these seem stupid questions, or over-familiar to those who know the topic. I don't, and I don't have or know the literature that experienced editors in the field probably do. I just came here on a tangent and, having enjoyed the article, thought it would be nice if the known history were made a little clearer. But YMMV. Best to all, DBaK (talk) 08:45, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
