Contested deletion

edit

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because it is notable, and there are references to prove it. See: http://www.aiga.org/medalist-massimoandlellavignelli/ for example --Vibhabamba (talk) 22:17, 9 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

There are still not enough independent reliable news sources with significant coverage about Lelle Vignelli, to satsify Wikipedia's notability requirements. However, the fact she jointly won an AIGA medal in 1982 means I'm not going to propose the article for AfD at this point. In my view, that shows she is of some note. Sionk (talk) 02:28, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

The AIGA medal is just one of the many prestigious awards Lella has ben awarded. She was even awarded the Presidential Design Award in 1985, delivered by president Ronald Reagan in person, for the National Park Service Publications Program. Her name alone is not so famous just because she professionally operated in a period when women still had a long way to be professionally recognized. She's always been in Massimo's shadow, who is famous enough to have his own page on Wikipedia. I believe as long as Massimo has its own page, Lella should have hers too, since everything they did and everything they won was accomplished togehter. Asheind (talk) 14:20, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Should this article be merged?

edit

There are parallel articles for both Lella Vignelli and her husband/lifelong collaborator Massimo Vignelli. Both articles seem to struggle to underscore the husband/wife duo aspect of their practice, there are inconsistencies between the two, and they also repeat a fair amount of information. Would merging both into one (better written, more robust) main Lella and Massimo Vignelli article be a preferable solution to the actual separate article format? (For comparison, please see: Charles and Ray Eames article.)

[NB: There is also an article about their design company; a prior company which they helped found; as well as an article about the university centre which holds their archives — however, in the case of a merged article, those would remain separate but linked (though the Vignelli Associates article could be marked with a "Main article" tag).]

Opinions and advice on the matter most welcome. Thank you, Cl3phact0 (talk) 18:18, 9 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

(Cross-posting between both talk pages)
My feeling is that they should remain separate, although I certainly agree that more work could be done to make both articles (and especially Lella's) stronger. My concern about merging them is that it under-plays Lella's contributions to her field (with a significant risk that her creative role is interpreted as having been subservient to her husband). Although they did work together and much of their most famous works were indeed collaborations, more could be done in the article to highlight the work that was done independently, such as the jewelry she created; the article about their design company should focus on their shared output. (I'd also note that despite Charles and Ray Eames having a shared article, they also have separate ones (Charles and Ray, although The Eames Office redirects to their shared page.). PS: I will put this on Talk:Massimo Vignelli as well.
Thanks, Dotx3. A first step might be simply to make both articles better, then revisit the question starting from two well written pieces?
The Vignelli Centre at RIT has some very good resources. Re: the jewellery, these two might be helpful: Through a Contemporary Lens: Lella Vignelli’s Jewelry for San Lorenzo, and Designed by: Lella Vignelli (which is also something of an A-Z of Lella's design work). It may also be worth contacting RIT directly to see if they would consider uploading imagery or other archival material to Commons. (I'd wager that there's a lot of unpublished gems in the Vignelli archives up there.)
I've tried to clean-up some of the language over the past few months, but there's a lot more work to do. Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 09:30, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
PS: Wholly agree that whatever the end result, Lella's contributions to both the Vignelli partnership — and more broadly, to post-war architecture and design — should be made clearer. She is not the subject of an article on this encyclopaedia simply because she was the wife of a famous designer. (One could probably argue that without Lella, Massimo may never have achieved the success and fame that he did. In my view, this, and all of the related articles should be more balanced and neutral in the way that this is reflected.) It's 2023 not 1967, after all.

I'm finding myself doing a lot of cross-posting between the Lella/Massimo articles – as well as wikiquote and wikidata, where they both have pages too (not to mention other wikis), which may lend weight to the argument for an eventual WP:MERGE. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 13:18, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello Dotx3, I've gone through the text a few (dozen) times and tried to get rid of promotional tone, clean-up problematic syntax (some of which may have been due to poor translation from Italian sources), fix/add refs, tidy-up sequence, continuity and flow, and generally wikify. There's still a lot missing and to be done in order to make the article better, though I think this is a decent first-go. Please have a look over my shoulder and make sure I haven't bodged anything up (when you have a chance). Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 07:24, 19 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

At a glance, it looks much improved - thanks for putting in the work! I'll take a more detailed pass through some time this coming week and contribute where I can. Dotx3 (talk) 03:34, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. (Also, thanks for tidying-up my forest through the trees typos!) The "Work" section still needs a lot of, ehem – work, and everything below "Legacy" is up for review (in my view). Look forward to seeing your improvements. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 06:34, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
PS: I'd also like to get rid of the {{Peacock|date=May 2022}} tag. As I did the editing, I'd rather defer to your judgement. Please remove if you think the article has been sufficiently expunged of breathless hyperbole.

Quotations section?

edit

I've moved two of the three quotations into relevant sections (and also added all three to wikiquote). Should this section be deleted from the article? (I find it a bit odd as is, but haven't found anything in MOS to justify its inclusion or removal.) -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 10:35, 19 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
