sculptures in film
editThere are not sculptures by either Picasso or Miró seen in Les Mystères du Château de Dé. The sculpture that is seen just before the travelers arrives at the châtaeu in a series of mobile shots is La Joie de Vivre / The Joy of Life, a 1927 bronze by Jacques Lipchitz. It is the same sculpture seen in a few other shots in the film: from inside through a window, and later when the man and woman arrive on foot and throw dice in the garden. The sculpture seen on the roof/terrace near the end of the film is by Henri Laurens: his Femme à la draperie, 1927. The Lipchitz is seen in numerous photographs of the Villa Noailles, including in this article. I do not know of illustrations of the Laurens but the work is in his style and Femme à la draperie was acquired for the Villa in 1927, as per Curtis (among others) [1] I am writing a book chapter that concerns sculpture in Surrealist cinema for a forthcoming book on sculpture and cinema and can add it to the references when published.
