- the article has become more than just a list. in the discussion made when it was nominated for deletion a couple users suggested it be renamed, and perhaps the article altered slightly.Grmike (talk) 02:23, 7 June 2010 (UTC)grmike
List of Canadian restaurants → List of Canadian restaurant chains — see Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_Canadian_restaurants, the article is specifically about chains, not all restaurants. What is Canadian and What is not
editWe have to draw a line somewhere because all restaurant chains that operate in Canada have a shell / subsidiary cooperation/headquarters that is Canadian. For example McDonald's Is a U.S. restaurant that has headquarters in Toronto for it's Canadian operations, however the profits and decisions are ultimately U.S. based. Therefore in order to prevent this from being a list of "List of restaurant chains that operate in Canada" the line should be drawn at where the ultimate base of the controlling interests of the company lie. --Tim (talk) 11:46, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- I think founding location and headquarters also play a role. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 11:49, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- We could group the page into "Founded in Canada" and "Currently Canadian". "headquarters" as I mentioned is not an indication of nationality because every Major chain has a "headquarters" per country.--Tim (talk) 12:02, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- I think that Tim Hortons should be included on this list, since it was founded in Canada and most of its locations are still there. Are there any other questionable cases? A&W was founded in the US, but the Canadian A&Ws are a separate entity, with a separate page.-Mparrault (talk) 13:27, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

- I think that if you survey Canadians they will say that McDonalds (and A&W) are American, and Tim Hortons is Canadian. Heck, if you survey Americans, those that know of Tim Hortons will say it is Canadian. While corporately speaking, the profits may not flow into Canadian hands, I think most people think that it is Canadian. BTW, personally I think this list should be "restaurant chains operating in Canada that do not warrant their own page." Cpfan776 (talk) 14:43, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- Tim Hortons should be considered Canadian because (a) it was established in Canada (b) its Global head office is in Canada (Oakville) and (c) the majority of its operations are in Canada. McDonald's Canada is not Canadian for purposes of this list because (a) McDonald's was established in the USA and (b) its Global head office is in the USA. The same goes for Subway, KFC, Buffalo Wild Wings and other chains that started elsewhere and expanded into Canada. Tim's, on the other hand, began in Hamilton and expanded outwards. I frankly don't care where the ownership resides, but it turns out that Restaurant Brands International is also headquartered in Oakville. PKT(alk) 15:00, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- I think that if we are going to disassociate subsidiary chains from chains of Canadian origin, then we'd need to change the name of the article to be more specific. Under the current title, both subsidiaries of foreign companies and chains of Canadian origin would fit here. But I fear that two different lists would likely lead to a merge request, as I am not sure that there is a strong enough for two different lists, leading us back to the same problem. My personal opinion is that it seems fine as it is. Isingness (talk) 23:58, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- Does "seems fine as it is" mean include Tim Hortons or leave out Tim Hortons? You may not be aware that this discussion started as the result of an edit war over the inclusion of Tim Hortons in this article.Cpfan776 (talk) 02:11, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Cpfan776 and Isingness: The Tim Hortons is operating in the Philippines, I've found in somewhere in Makati. The Tim Hortons is a Canadian coffee restaurant chain. --Cyrus noto3at bulaga Talk to me 09:43, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
- Haha, why on earth would anyone leave out Tim Horton's? If you leave the quintessential Canadian chain off this list you might as well delete the whole page in my opinion :) But for policy reasons, Wikipedia is a historical place, so that Tim Horton's has ever been based in Canada is enough to include it on the list. If there are concerns, add a footnote discussing its later ownership status to alleviate said concerns. Isingness (talk) 18:25, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Humpty's..?!
editHow come Humpty's is not on this list? It was founded in Alberta in 1977. https://www.humptys.com/about/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.34.115.128 (talk) 22:42, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
