Table for Spices with Local names

Kalpasi

Listed as "Pathar Ka Phool" in the "Indian Common Name (All these are Hindi names but written in English)" column, the name given in the article is "Jeevanti". Some clarification would be appreciated, and an image if anyone has some at home. Also, is "Kalpasi" the name only when dried? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 17:54, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Regarding references

It is pretty much impossible to reference these things properly, right? They are all translations, so how can they be correctly referenced? - Genghizkhan91 (talk) 14:47, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

If we find references here and there for specific terms, we are talking many references. It would be better to find lists of conversions as references. We could probably interlanguage link some of the translations, even to wiktionary, if appropriate. (I am not sure if that would be best, from the perspective of English readers.) —PC-XT+ 10:36, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

@PC-XT: One could possibly argue that if it isn't reliably sourced, then it should be removed! (per WP:Verifiability) Currently the page has only one reference, and I have tagged it for ref-improvement. It is possible that there are suitable references on the pages of the individual spices. 220 of ^Borg 05:20, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

I certainly didn't mean to suggest we don't need references, or that unreferenced things should stay. If there is a question about something, then it should definitely be referenced or removed. I'm just saying that this could require many references, so looking for some that contain many translations may be a good idea. Interlanguage links probably wouldn't help English readers, but linking the foreign language terms to pages in that language could possibly work, however, linking to the page of that language, even if verified in that language, may not be very helpful in itself for verifiability on English Wikipedia, though it could possibly yield sources. Links to English Wikipedia or other English WikiMedia wikis may possibly be helpful, but I doubt very many discuss translations. I don't intend to add anything unless I can reference it. Regarding language equivalents

It is hard to find correct language equivalences for spices. That said, many of the translations are not correct. For example, "sirka" written in arabic script is vinegar, not citric acid. Another problem occurs when there is no direct equivalent. For example Aniseed/Anise Seed is not fennel (Saunf), even though they belong to the same family along with carrot. Anise is the main flavoring ingredient of licorice (strangely enough, it is not licorice seed???). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.13.142.26 (talk) 00:45, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks to everyone who helped to put this in order. It looks like it is in pretty good shape. You know, it was deleted once? And, a while ago the table was all broken and there were many cells empty. Except it has gone mad, Anna. There are over 100 official languages in India alone, the horizontal scrolling was madness and people (as noted above) were disagreeing about the script spellings (where there is also much scope for vandalism etc).
