There are four North American countries.
Canada, Greenland, the United States, and Mexico.
The Bahamas have sometimes been lumped in with North America and sometimes the Caribbean depending on which reference you looked at.
Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba and the rest of the islands in the Gulf of Mexico are Caribbean Nations.
Central America is from Mexico to Columbia. 76.179.50.72 (talk) 16:33, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

This article has long missed 'countries' in the sense of regions or areas that are included in the North American general list and area list. This makes the automatically generated total at the bottom of the table inaccurate by definition. Such regions are also included in the world population list.
For some 'country' can only mean sovereign state, but if that were the case, no articles would have to specify sovereign state rather than country. As a title, 'List of X countries by Y' is simply better than 'sovereign states and dependent territories. It takes advantage of the flexibility of language and is easier to read.
I have added a column for official figures and dates, so that this article does not rely on a single source. Indeed, there are now dozens of sources. To make room, I removed the columns for absolute growth and doubling time - they are not very interesting and also not included in the master list. Wizmut (talk) 01:11, 28 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
