Coordinates

edit

I removed the coordinates for two islands [1], as there was an error with the longitude. -- User:Docu

It's fixed now (source:Wikimapia). -- Speculos (talk) 18:33, 24 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Completion of the List

edit

This list is being developed on the German WP, see de:Liste von Torres-Strait-Inseln. Whoever wants to transfer it here. There are about 190 entries now (compared to 134 here), all with coordinates, most with area and population figures. We are starting to wonder where the rest of the purportedly 274 islands is, although there are a few unnamed ones.--Ratzer (talk) 06:36, 30 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Format of the table of islands

edit

It seems this table has grown like topsy and (aside from being incomplete) and isn't consistent in the use of official vs unofficial and other variants of names. I note that the "common name" principle in Wikipedia refers to the naming of Wikipedia articles and not the official naming of places (which in this case is the responsibility of the Queensland Government). So, to keep this table in a maintainable state, I have updated it as follows. The primary official name exactly as it appears in the Queensland Place Names database is in the first column. "Exactly as it appears" extends to presence or absence of words like "Islet", "Island", "Cay". In the second column, the first names listed are all the official alteratives names exactly as they appear in the Queensland Place Names database. After those, any other common name already in the table was retained (except where it was different only by the addition/deletion of the words "Islet", "Island" or "Cay". My intention is that each entry will be cited to the Queensland Place Names database and take its coords from that source (but I have yet to do this, it will take some time). If there is a Wikipedia article that represents that place (no matter what it is called), I have linked that article from the first column name. Any debates about the choice of name for the Wikipedia article should be conducted on the Talk page for that article and resolved in the usual consensus way (Wikipedia consensus should not change the official names in this table but could change the common names). Barring human error on my part, the current table contains everything classified as an island or cay listed in the Queensland Place Names database for the local government areas of Torres Shire, Torres Strait Island Region and Northern Peninsula Area Region, which I think cover the whole of the Torres Strait between them. I did not include anything classified as a "rock" (note that the name Rock is used for at least one island/cay in the list, not everything named Rock is a rock it seems). There are a further 66 rock entries that I can find for those local government area. I don't think rocks are necessary for this article, but happy to have a discussion about the inclusion of rocks. The data on population and areas is incomplete, but I think we should make sure they are 2016 census figures to make them comparable. With areas, we should use island areas rather than island-and-surrounding-sea areas (which you get from locality data sometimes, also from some census data). But I appreciate that population and area data is not always able to be obtained from a single consistent source, so we may have to "do our best". Kerry (talk) 05:04, 3 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
