Where is Captain Unreliable?

Captain Unreliable is missing. He was in some of the earlier, limited print issues of Viz 86.3.101.212 (talk) 18:08, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Delete Buster Gonad Article?

edit

Someone has marked the Buster Gonad article for deletion. Use the hyperlink and you'll see what I mean. Deleting the Buster Gonad article would be a mistake. In my opinion it should be left as is, along with all the other Viz cartoon articles. Nabokov (talk) 19:14, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I can't see any justification for deleting it other than bureucratic vandalism. My vote is to leave it. 86.3.101.212 (talk) 18:07, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

What about the masterly one-off Vibrating bum-faced goats?

edit

Sadly, I can't recall many details other than that it involved the traditional visit of two children to the countryside where their uncle, naturally enough, farmed vibrating goats with arse-shaped faces. I seem to remember that a cliff-top rescue was carried out. A work of genius. GerryK1 (talk) 15:25, 9 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have added a reference to them and linked to an already existing Wikipedia article about them. Funny how a lot of people seem to remember this particular strip. IrishPete (talk) 13:00, 20 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I cant believe 'Rock Star Dad' isn't on here!

edit

Who could forget the immortal line "Dad's ripped to the tits on drink & drugs! Just like a real rock star!"

Since I became I a father I have wanted to get a t-shirt with that frame printed on it... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Danjafari (talkcontribs) 01:04, 2 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Brown Bottle

edit

Is Brown Bottle really based on Davey Graham? Spicemix (talk) 20:24, 16 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Phantom of the Opera

edit

Anybody recall this character?

Pretty certain he made more than one appearance in Viz.

Ravy Davey Gravy

edit

This entry says "His name probably derives from Wavy Gravy." There's no citation and it seems very unlikely as Wavy Gravy is largely unknown in the UK. Pretty much all the search results I got trying to link the are either this wikipedia page or a version of the wavy gravy one which mentions Ravy Davey. Any thoughts - or remove? 94.172.126.123 (talk) 13:36, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal

I believe many of the Viz characters should be merged such as Biffa Bacon as the they have no third persons sources. Dwanyewest (talk) 14:37, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Support - Specifically, there are several articles with no references or indication of notability:
Actually, most of the blue links on this list already redirect to Viz (comic), since many of the characters were merged back in April. But regardless of whether these articles are stubs, if the information cannot be verified with reliable sources, then it is probably not notable enough to have its own article, and should be merged or redirected. Fortdj33 (talk) 17:21, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
I went through the list again, and added more articles to the suggestions above. Most of them have sat unedited for years with reference tags on them, and need to be dealt with one way or the other. Fortdj33 (talk) 18:03, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
I was aware of the previous merges and deletions, and I didn't support those either.
There is clearly a problem here of primary sourcing (not being unsourced, that's easy to fix). As always at WP, DC Comics stuff can have vast series of unassailable articles about it, all sourced entirely in-universe, but UK fiction content is held to a higher standard. This appears to be due to a lack of comparably vociferous UK fanboys, nothing else.
These Viz articles are in many cases substantial and well-written. I'm not too concerned about the real trivia like Desert Island Teacher, but Drunken Bakers and even Rat Boy are some of the better-written WP articles on comic strips or characters. We should be working to build on these, not trying to delete them just because there might be a policy reason we can find that would permit us to do so. Andy Dingley (talk) 18:55, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
You misunderstand the meaning of "stub article" almost entirely. Please read WP:STUB. Andy Dingley (talk) 18:46, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Please do not let this turn into an argument about what constitutes a stub. And please note that WP:STUB states: "If a stub has little verifiable information, or if its subject has no apparent notability, it may be deleted or be merged into another relevant article". This discussion should be about which of these articles can be redeemed by adding reliable sources. Because most of them have had their chance to prove notability, and are still coming up short. New Merger Proposal

edit

I believe characters such as Victorian Dad, The Modern Parents should be merged as they are lacking in a real demonstration of notability or third person sources. Dwanyewest (talk) 17:38, 18 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I believe you dont know what you are talking about, but are giving an opinion nonetheless. Ceoil (talk) 14:51, 15 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Viz

edit

The merge was a disgrace, so many characterisations ruined. Fuck you people. Ceoil (talk) 01:59, 19 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Ceoil: It looks like you can thank Skr15081997 for this hack job merge. As the person who wrote the (admittedly largely unsourced) content of Terry Fuckwitt, I'm not impressed to come back here and discover this. — Scott talk 16:05, 13 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Scott: Nothing is set in stone. Chris Donald's bio is worth tracking down if you havent read it; very wry and funny and would be useful in fleshing out and sourcing the main character, um, bios. Ceoil (talk) 22:47, 13 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
I am in favour of re-opening this. I agree with none of the merge rationales, given this is a publication that had a circulation reaching 1.2m around 92-93. Work needs to be done on indivudual articles yes, but thats not justification for the nuclear option. Ceoil (talk) 01:44, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
I concur. Not only was it a poor decision based on an under-attended discussion, the merge itself was carried out by a 16-year-old kid in India who is clearly completely unqualified to deal with this topic. I suggest that - since nobody else seems bothered so far - you, I, and Andy identify which articles should be resurrected and get on with the job. — Scott talk 18:15, 15 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Agreed.
Can we redefine Viz as "manga"? Or have it published by DC Comics? Yet again, UK subjects are held to higher standards against in-media sourcing whilst the (simply greater number) of Sheldon Couper fanboys on WP can write what they like about Iron Man's inside leg measurement and sourcing is never required. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:29, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Scott; it seems that the articles that got hit were those that lacked any cites, which jesus is poor rational, outside policy and concidental. Have started to resore and cite; with Sid the Sexist, Student Grant, Terry Fuckwitt, Big Vern, Cockney Wanker and Millie Tant. Help appreciated, though I'm not expecting much; you and Andy seem to be more about talking than doing. Bluster without action does not impress me and andy you sat on your hands here. Ceoil (talk) 19:54, 15 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Because I chose to have a conversation first rather than just dropping everything else and going for it hell for leather, I'm "blustering"? Bollocks to you then. Do what you want, I'm out of here. — Scott talk 23:40, 15 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Point taken @Scott:. Ok I put it badly. I could do with your help, if your still on. Ceoil (talk) 00:10, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sorry guys, was blowing off steam re the deletions. My bad. Ceoil (talk) 00:26, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
In the words of Viz: Fuck off. Andy Dingley (talk) 18:02, 17 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ceoil and Andy Dingley I can't talk about other people nominating articles for deletion or mergers. I can only discuss what I feel regardless of whether an article is a DC or Manga character if a character doesn't have sufficient third person sources to justify its existence it should either be merged or deleted. Also saying WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not an adequate argument I feel too many people on Wikipedia will argue that an article is inherently notable rather than find sources to improve said article at least Ceoil you have made active measures to improve articles such as Cockney Wanker. Dwanyewest (talk) 19:54, 18 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Dwanye. The sources are out there, but given the heyday is old, they are hard to grapple together. Dingley, I richly deserved that fuck off. The night I posted that there was a very cranky and not good night for me. If you and @Scott: dont want to crush me into thousands of pieces, we could still do this over time. 25 April 2014 merger proposals

edit

Request received at Merger Request Noticeboard to merge Rat Boy; Raffles, the Gentleman Thug; into the List of Viz comic strips article. Rationale: notability, non-sourced for years. Comments are welcome below. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 18:25, 26 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

See the comments already above. Why did you remove all the references from RatBoy? Andy Dingley (talk) 20:50, 26 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Prepping for the mergers, which I assumed were going to happen rather quickly. There have been no attempts on reliable sourcing of these articles in 8+ years of existence, which, for me—working here with a focus on mergers and the merging of articles—usually indicates that no one cares about the article, which itself usually indicates a lack of any notability for a stand-alone encyclopedia article. The 'references' were removed because literary works can't be cited for themselves (as that is not considered RS). GenQuest "Talk to Me" 17:52, 30 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Support - as the articles stand, without third party refences. The Fat Slags is an example which uses better referencing. Jonpatterns (talk) 12:34, 7 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Jellyhead

edit

The entry for Jellyhead says that it was a one-off strip (involving the foiling of an armed robbery). There was a second strip, involving the tide coming in, a shark that hates the taste of lime jelly, and a terrorist gunboat, but I do not have a source for it. Does anybody here have the reference for the edition it was in so that the entry can be corrected? PortholePete (talk) 09:33, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge of Raffles, the Gentleman Thug into List of Viz comic strips

edit

Regrettable but likely necessary BoomboxTestarossa (talk) 22:52, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Agree. I can't see any reason for this to have an article in its own right, and it doesn't cite any sources, which weakens its case. Lonegroover (talk) 08:58, 21 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hugh Scully

edit

There was a one-off strip where Hugh Scully from the Antiques Roadshow tried to find out who had murdered Richard and Judy in a guesthouse. In passing, the killer referred to a piece of antique furniture as being from the wrong period, which Scully took as a proof of guilt. I can't remember enough to add it though.
