Merge same guns into same table element?
editIs there a reason why there are some AR-15 variants on the list (apart from manufacturing marketing purposes)? If we were to put every AR-15 variant and every AK variant rifle here that is renamed by it's manufacturer since it has one part that makes it incompatible since it has different handguards mount, there would be literally hundreds of those here. If it has AR-15 lower (receiver), it's AR-15 variant rifle (and yes, I'm aware that AR-15 isn't technically assoult rifle as it's typically signifying civilian version, but I hope everybody gets the point). Same should go for AKs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.103.134.99 (talk) 14:33, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
SKS removed from the list
editI removed the SKS from the list as it does not meet the criteria for being a proper assault rifle.
Common format for names using dashes
editI'm not entirely sure where dashes belong, and when. I put dashes in for the ones I know are military designations (M-16, M-14), and didn't put any in where they didn't exist in the guns' respective pages. If I screwed up something or there's a better way to organize something here, please do fix it.
Syncing
editThis page is currently synced with Category:Assault rifles. I'll try to sync it with "List of firearms" once the parenthetical information is over, probably just by grepping for "assault rifle" or something like that.
SS-1
editThe SS-1 link redirects to a page about the SS-1 Scud. There is an SS-1 Rifle, but I'm not sure how to link to it.
Proposed new format
editI took the first part of this list and turned it into a table with a bit more info and a lot more visual appeal. Do you think it's worth doing the whole page in this style? Since response was positive I am moving ahead with the redesign. It should be ready to move to the article page within 24 hours. Moved to article page

- Definitely so, and I think it may be possible to include some more information in addition to what you're showing here. Nice work! Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:30, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'm fairly unfamiliar with this subject area, but the table looks good to me. You can make the table sortable by turning class="wikitable" into class="wikitable sortable" . I might leave off the "Major users" column if it proves to be contentious. --Pixelface (talk) 20:33, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- The table's not bad, but if you want to fend off the deletion crowd, put the information in context with a little bit of narrative, and write it as if speaking to an audience that knows almost nothing about weapons. Not a lot required, perhaps a little bit about Kalishnikov and about FN, perhaps an explanation about the differences in ammo. Toss in a source or two, such as one of the books cited in the assault rifle article. Good luck. Mandsford (talk) 20:47, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Looks nice... nice touch with the flags and such. Rarelibra (talk) 20:55, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
OK, now that's what I'd call a good list! I love it! If you want my help, just let me know. Kimu 21:21, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- UPDATE I have added a line for additional info about each rifle to allow those unfamiliar with the material to more easily find what they are looking for. OlenWhitaker • talk to me or don't • ♣ ♥ ♠ ♦ 21:26, 12 March 2008 (UTC) 21:26, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- That is certainly a worthwhile approach. Making the table sortable and the data wikilinked would be even better. I'll withdraw my AfD request if we can replace the current content with that. Sandstein (talk) 21:28, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'm on it! Give me 24 hours and I'll have it done. OlenWhitaker • talk to me or don't • ♣ ♥ ♠ ♦ 23:11, 12 March 2008 (UTC) 23:11, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your effort! I propose that we format the comments field as a proper column of its own, so that the table as a whole can be made sortable. This would allow the user to find all US assault rifles, list the most modern ones, etc. Sandstein (talk) 06:07, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
- Still milcruft, but then I'd rather see the whole category replaced with 'assault rifles are medium-sized firearms useless for hunting'. Seriously, though, I can't see any particular reason why this version shouldn't exist, so Keep switching that in. Eithin (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 03:07, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
If anyone at all knows how to put in a variable sorting mechanism on the page so they can be sorted by a choice date, manufacturure, etc, i would greatly appreaciate this if it is even possible. Also the addition of some other stats like cartridge and barrel length. i will personaly amle a start. - Anonymus frequent wikipedian —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.179.245.57 (talk) 11:57, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
New design
editI just took the new page design live on the article page. It is basically just an amplification of the previous list except that I removed the red links or any link that redirected to another rifle already listed elsewhere. I also ran across a couple of assault rifles not on the list and added them. The page is still not finished and some of the entries still lack some of the information, but I will continue to add content to the page in the coming days including a proper introduction and probably some more rifles as well. It has been suggested that the general information now located below the rifle's entry be moved to the side so the page can be made sortable. I like the idea, but on my old 1024x768 display it makes the table awfully cramped. I realize the great majority of systems display at much higher resolutions and if someone else wants to do it, I guess I won't complain, but I couldn't bring myself to create a page that looked like butt on my own (really old) screen.
Phew! That was a lot more work than I thought it would be!
Big thanks to everyone who supported me on this!

SCAR
editUm... should't the SCAR be called the MK. 16 or MK. 17 depending on which varient? I say this because, to my understanding, SCAR was the name of the competition not the rifle itself.13Tawaazun14 (talk) 20:30, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
- The competition was called SCAR, but so is the rifle as shown on the manufacturer's website. OlenWhitaker • talk to me or don't • ♣ ♥ ♠ ♦ 23:20, 19 March 2008 (UTC) 23:20, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

vz 58
editThe sentence "Based on the oft-copied AK-47, the Sa vz. 58 has seen service with several nations' armies including the present day Czech Republic, and Slovakia." is not correct. More precisely it is no truth. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.102.184.73 (talk) 03:31, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Carbines listed as assault rifles
editSeveral weapons on the list are technically carbines not rifles. The M4 being one of the more obvious examples. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.1.217.2 (talk) 13:56, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

Vandalism changing Taiwan to China.
editThis page has been hit with changing Taiwan listings to say China. Could someone fix it and keep an eye on it. I would fix it myself, but I'd like someone to keep an eye on it and I don't frequent this page. Also, would someone contact the vandelism bot manager to see if they can add a rule for this. It seems certain individuals in China seem quite intent on adding this vandalism to every page they see.--Robert Wm "Ruedii" (talk) 03:38, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
AR15s are clearly NOT assault rifles.
editPutting the AR-15 on this list is not only factually incorrect, it generates unnecessary confusion and comments. M16 is an assault rifle. AR15 is not. Wowthisguyiscorrect (talk) 11:42, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

Armalite Rifles
editThe name of the list should be changed to " List of Armalite Rifles ", since " Armalite Rifle " is the proper term, not " Assault Rifle " 2600:8801:7206:7000:F4F7:56AC:6C8D:9209 (talk) 02:40, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
Source – Criteria dissonance
editWhat if a gun meets all criteria to be an assault rifle (STV rifle or Daewoo K1) but is called a submachine gun by a source, or vice versa a source calling the Heckler & Koch HK417 an assault rifle even though it meets the criteria for a battle rifle FSbiran (talk) 01:03, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
