Table misnumbered
editNote that the table repeats "17" and "18" twice. I think it is a simple matter to renumber the entries but I prefer that someone closer to the subject matter make the change to make sure it's that simple.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:47, 12 November 2016 (UTC)
Updated Numbers
editSomeone without an account recently updated the Thanjavur numbers to something that's probably more accurate for 2019. Unfortunately, they did not provide a source, & I couldn't find anything reliable to support their number, so I reverted the edit. Right now, the page says that the numbers reflect the 2011 Census. There won't be another census until 2021. I think that we should either stick with 2011 numbers, or the whole page should consistently reflect another (reliable) source. I don't think the page is well served by having 31 statistics from one source & one from another. Pathawi (talk) 17:04, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

Over the past several months, I have undone most of the edits to this page. Some of them are clearly vandalism. Others are probably made with good intentions: People who have somewhere seen (or think they have seen) more up-to-date information on the population of major Tamil cities, but who make these changes unsystematically, without citation, and without changing the framing of the article to reflect that it would no longer reflect the unified source it claims to reflect. For the cases of obvious vandalism, the motive is really unclear to me. I think that a good portion of these edits would not occur if the page were semi-protected, and users had to log in first. At the very least, this would make it easier to have a conversation about a more useful way to update these populations with documented data. Pathawi (talk) 23:24, 19 October 2019 (UTC)

Population Source
edit@Arjayay: and @Ajayvijayy:: This looks like it could be headed toward an edit war. Here's the situation, Ajayvijayy: The very beginning of the page says:
The following are the cities in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, which have a population of 1 lakh (100,000) and above (city / corporation area only), based on the 2011 census conducted by Government of India.
There is certainly more recent information for some cities in TN, but we can't change any of that info without also changing the description of what the whole page is. That can certainly be done, but we should then talk about doing this in a more systematic way. It seems a little odd to have 31 pieces of information from one source from 2011 and one from 2019 based using an enumeration technique that isn't comparable to that of the other 31: The whole point of the table is to provide comparative information. At present, the operating assumption seems to be that since we're going to have a new census next year, we should just hold out for that information. If you see a better option, we should discuss it, rather than just reverting back & forth. Pathawi (talk) 09:07, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Census Results Expected 2023–2024
editDue to COVID-19, the 2021 Indian Census has been delayed. I had been hoping that we'd be able to update the info on this chart & the accompanying map this year. Most of the changes made to this page are vandalism (why?), but occasionally someone comes in with more up-to-date information on one city or other. If we aren't using a unified source that compares apples to apples, I don't think we can have a meaningful comparative chart. However, it occurred to me that we could add another column to the table to allow any updated information.
So currently it looks like:
S.No | Name | District | Population in 2011 |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Chennai | Chennai | 8,696,010 |
It could look like:
S.No | Name | District | Population in 2011 |
Updates |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Chennai | Chennai | 8,696,010 | UN projects population at 11,235,000 in 2021[1] |
Any thoughts? Pathawi (talk) 12:42, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

- SquareEagle65 (talk · contribs), could you possibly provide a source for these changes? I'm looking right now, but it would make things a little easier if you had a reference. Pathawi (talk) 15:16, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Never mind: I found sources. I'll make those changes. Pathawi (talk) 15:20, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
