Not all practitioners are converts

edit

I have removed Hugo Enomiya-Lassalle from this list. Unlike (for example) John Daido Loori, Enomiya-Lassalle practised as a Zen teacher while continuing as a member of the Roman Catholic Church and the Jesuit order, and since he did not leave Christianity for Buddhism, it does not seem appropriate to list him as a "convert". There have since been a number of Zen teachers in the West who practise and teach Zen without repudiating their Christian origins, including Elaine MacInnes, Robert E. Kennedy, Patrick Eastman, and (I think) Ruben Habito. Proponents of Christian-Buddhist "dual belonging" are, I think, not helpfully regarded as "converts".

By the way, the reference which was given for the listing, an article by Sharf on the Sanbo Kyodan, is my own transcription from my old personal website: I recognize my own typing! The article in fact says explicitly of Thomas Merton and Hugo Enomiya-Lassalle: "These pioneers turned to Buddhist contemplative practice not as converts to Buddhism, but in order to deepen their own understanding of Christian spirituality."
