Big Lebowski?
editDoes The Big Lebowski actually contain much/any explicit use of marijuana?--May Cause Dizziness (talk) 20:15, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Answering an 8yr old post, but it's a good question. At first all I could recall is the scene where he's in bed with the artist smoking a joint with a clip, but googling a little more he also is smoking a joint when he meets the other Lebowski, and at some point while driving. So it's not necessarily constant, but it does appear several times, and I think the overarching issue is that the protagonist is portrayed as a stoner. Films in General
editDoes it matter that there has to be 'frequent' use, why not moments of use, jokes and other indicators that cannabis use is present. I think this article does not highlight that cannabis use is present even if a small moment. I also think cannabis jokes are important as they highlight social acceptance if not a legal one in many countries.--Red Shield (talk) 14:49, 28 January 2018 (UK)
I now have two people stating that the film Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring does not mean marijuana. Here is the proof, and we all know what it means, so should fall within the subjects perimeters:-

If this is not indicative enough, shall we all get formal admission from Steven Spielberg (Poltergeist) and all the other films listed? That is what is basically being demanded by people removing my valid observation highlighted in the above verifiable link.
- Hi, Red Shield. That is not proof that the LorR movies are showing marijuana use. That is proof the LotR movies and book are calling what they're smoking "pipe-weed." I'm not sure when the first use of 'weed' as slang for marijuana was, but I doubt that's what a British academic born in 1892 meant by the word in 1937. What makes you think Tolkien was referring to something similar to marijuana instead of something similar to tobacco? --valereee (talk) 18:42, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
There is no copyright breach if it is just a small portion, that's why Youtube have it on there site and it has not been removed. But you don't seem to want to acknowledge their copyyright laws - which are the same as Wiki's. Anyway, small portions are not a breach of copyright, that's what they told me when I did a media law module in my law degree, so why remove it? Here is the non-copyright breach link to Youtube:-
[Yes, it is a copyright breach; we don't allow fair use on Wikipedia outside of very limited circumstances. Stop re-adding this link.]
Do not remove this as there is no copyright breach or Youtube would have removed it; they follow the same UK copyright laws.
No one seems to want to look at the fact that in other films that weed is never mentioned, but the reference is clear. Watch the clip, Bilbo calls it "weed" not "pipe-weed" as you all misrepresent.
- This has prompted me to dig out my copy of LotR to get chapter and verse on what is being smoked:
they imbibed or inhaled, through pipes of clay or wood, the smoke of the burning leaves of a herb, which they called pipe-weed or leaf, a variety probably of Nicotiana
. ‑ Iridescent 19:53, 4 May 2019 (UTC)- Iridescent, thank you, I'm not where I can lay my hands on my copy but that is what I'd fuzzily remembered from the probably two dozen times I've read the series: that it was referred to by Tolkien as likely tobacco. --valereee (talk) 20:43, 4 May 2019 (UTC) Red Shield I think what you're trying to get at is that because the filmmakers shortened it to 'weed' they were giving a wink-wink-nod-nod to the idea of it being possibly pot rather than tobacco, probably in order to make the 14-year-old boys whom all mass market filmmakers so badly want to attract snigger and elbow one another in the ribs? If you can find someone saying that in a reliable source, that could probably be added into this article. --valereee (talk) 20:49, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
- Also see Middle-earth plants — we have a reference to the tobacco of the Southfarthing, a small leather bag full of tobacco is spoken of as being filled with pipe-weed, and tobacco is the exclusive term in The Hobbit. Nyttend (talk) 00:24, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
