Bond, James Bond
editThe (fictional) Bond family motto is orbis non sufficit ("The World is not enough/sufficient", hence the film of the same name)- is this an apt list to add this snippet to, or is there another list?
Fraternities and sororities
editThere is already a List of fraternity and sorority mottos. Unless someone objects, I will remove those from this page: we should either list all or none, and listing them all would double the article's length. PruneauT 09:01, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Educational institutions merge
editShould this section be merged with List of university mottos? Since there are quite a few universities out there, I'd suggest making the institutions section on this page just link to List of university mottos, which has them broken down by country. --skew-t 02:23, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
Criteria for inclusion
editI've noticed that there's a section for "Educational institutions," and I was about to add a bunch of high schools mottos, but I didn't because I wasn't sure if it was appropriate. However, many such institutions have articles here, and that's the criteria for most lists. The problem is as highlighted by Skew-t; there's WAY too many notable educational institutions out there, especially if we're including K-12s under this catagory. If this is just a section of university mottos, it is my opinion that it should be labeled as such. K-12s mottos seem to be eligible for inclusion, but I think it'd be much more appropriate to link to lists such as List of high schools in Florida and add the mottos there. Many of the supposed mottos in the Business section are really slogans, the difference being that "a motto is a short phrase that usually expresses a moral aim or purpose; a slogan is a catch phrase used by a political party or other organization in advertising or promotion" (thesaurus.reference.com). For example, what is the moral aim of Mazda's "Zoom Zoom"? 76.10.173.70 (talk) 05:04, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
I would agree that many of the entries under Business mottos are slogans or advertisement phrases, and do not belong here. Another key distinction, a motto is something directed inward, either towards the organization, or the members of the organization. These advertising slogans are directed outwards, towards customers or other external entities. I would suggest that most of the Business entries should be removed. Educational Institutes Mottos
editThere is not a list of "in other countries" under Educational Institutes that does not make much sense. What is the initial country? Either way there are universities in the first list from many countries. To name a few: USA, Canada, England, Mexico, Brazil, Romania, Australia... I think this section should be remodeled, taking into account the other problems listed before. but in Jamaica there is
"mens agitat molem"
editThere are seven institutions on this page with the Latin motto "mens agitat molem", with three different English translations:
- University of Oregon: Mens agitat molem (Latin: Mind moves matter)
- University of Warwick: Mens agitat molem (Latin: Mind over Matter)
- Nova Scotia Agricultural College: "mens agitat molem" ("mind over matter")
- Darmstadt University of Technology: "mens agitat molem" ("mind drives matter")
- Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu: "mens agitat molem" ("mind moves matter")
- Eindhoven University of Technology: "mens agitat molem" ("mind over matter")
- Rossall School: "men's agitat molem" ("mind over matter")
Is it the case that these are the habitual English renditions of the phrase at those institutions (in which case, all are correct - despite being different), or have some been accidentally mistranslated? Three of them are in non English-speaking countries, so they can't be the habitual renditions, but perhaps they are the best translation of the sense of the habitual native rendition into English? — Preceding unsigned comment added by PRB (talk • contribs) 09:00, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
and here is me, thinking it meant, 'never mind, doesn't matter..' — Preceding unsigned comment added by Woolywords (talk • contribs) 20:14, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
Genuine Query...help
editI live in a Northern UK town that has a rich heritage, that has links both in the West and East. Some 60 years ago, Ghandi stayed here..you may have heard of him. More recently, Condalesa Rice has been here... you may have heard of her. Gladstone, Charles Napier, Luddites..a whole panoply of stars in history were here. British Northrop, was based here, created the machinery that made the clothing for millions.(and still does) Cobble is based here, and in Chattanooga -and now China.
Where I work, the building next door to us, has a really unique history, that needs to be recorded, for future generations. Am 58, this Saturday, and the best present that you could ever give me, my friend, is show me where to learn, how to convert what I have written during my research of here, into words that can be read by our childrens children and ad infinitum. When I first decided to join Wiki, I made the conscious thought that, my own family would not know that, I did this. If my Mother, still alive, knew that, I were contributing to knowledge of the World, her little heart would burst. So, in the best traditions of writers, the nom de plume/ Fr., pen name, woolywords. Have even created a secret email address, in Canada, so as to hide... woolywords AT yahoo.ca I don't do links... Once I recieve clear and patent instructions on doing the whole 9 yards, this post will be deleted.
as ever, my life in your hands...Woolywords (talk) 21:04, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
