Plain silly

edit

A Scotsman, I do not mind Edinburgh, being Edimburgo in Italian and Spanish, Edinborg in Icelandic, Edinburgas in Lithuanian. likewise the Italians do not seem to mind their cities being known by English names, eg. Leghorn, Livorno; Florence, Firenze; Naples, Napoli etc. Why is it that there is such a problem with people referring to Bombay, Calcutta and Madras by their accepted and common names in the English language? By all means the use of the local vernacular name should be used when speaking the language, but not in English. When I go to the city in Sweden, I do not go to Goteborg, I go to Gothenburg. well, it is silly... but people continue to call the places the names they are popularly known by. for instance, you'd have a tough time getting a cab to take you to rajiv chowk in delhi, but everyone knows connaught place (or "palace"). on the other hand, the only person who would know the place verapoly would be the archbishop of verapoly... everyone else knows varapuzha. bombay, calcutta, bangalore and madras are still known by those names amongst those who speak english as a first-ish language. and will continue to be known by those names for a while to come... joseph 19:34, 14 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
If you had been violently annexed and had thousands of severe human rights abuses committed upon you by the Italians, you probably would not be comfortable with the use of their name in your official documents. 106.51.83.72 (talk) 07:29, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
At least in the case of bombay, that name continues to be commonly used by many of the cities residents, as well as by many in India in general. As i understand it, the name change was instigated by a far-right Indian-fascist political party when they were briefly in power back in 1996, due to their anti-British ideology. Even the Russians do not insist that in English speaking countries refer to their capital as Moskva!

Name change proposal

edit

I would like this to be renamed List of public places in India renamed after independence, so that other renamings could be entered. It hasn't been just cities and states, it's at least two airports: Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport [1], Indira Gandhi International Airport, quite a few major streets and roads, like the Grand Trunk Road, [2], more examples here [3], at least one square [4], Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research. I'd imagine there'd be other public places, memorials, landmarks, universities, monuments (e.g. Ochterlony Monument) etc. Novickas (talk) 19:25, 4 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose - This list will be long enough with just cities and states. If there are a good number of other notable landmarks (besides cities and states) that were renamed after India's independence, then perhaps a new article can be created for them. If you were to create such an article, I would caution you to only include notable landmarks. A good rule of thumb is that if a landmark already has its own wiki article, then it's probably notable. Filling up a new list with a bunch of non-notable streets and parks will just cause it to be nominated for deletion again. SnottyWong comment 20:49, 4 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment To avoid confusion, we should be clear about the multiplicity of issues here which seem to include:
  1. The notability of the features. In other words, should we just include features with their own articles or limit by notability in some other way, e.g. by provision of a specific source.
  2. The scope of the list topographically. In other words, should the list just cover specific kinds of features such as cities or should it cover any notable type of feature - airport, mountain, lake, palace or whatever.
  3. The scope of the list in time. In other words, should we be considering name changes related to Independence, Partition or other major historical events.

My position on these separate points is that we should keep the list general in scope topographically and in time but should do some pruning of lesser features after some research. When we have a good general list of notable features, we will then be in a better position to assess how the list might best be subdivided into separate sections or sublists.

I think it's probably better to keep the list as narrow as possible - only to list notable streets etc., to prevent clutter (I've removed all the non-notable entries already) and to limit it to places renamed as a result of independence. I'd still support limiting it to cities and states, but consensus seems to be against meon that one. Claritas § 09:02, 5 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Support This will be a useful list. We should restrict the entries to name changes made post-independence and only places/landmarks with their own articles shoule be included. If over the years the list grows to ummanageable level we can then think of creating such lists for the states of India. Shyamsunder (talk) 09:26, 5 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose the current name appropriately restricts scope to notable and important name changes. Verbal chat 09:58, 5 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose I agree with User:Verbal and User:Snottywong the current name appropriately restricts scope to notable and important name changes. once it get unmanageable then we can think renaming to limit it but currently there no need to rename it. KuwarOnline Talk 14:32, 5 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Keep current name of List of renamed Indian cities and states - Like Verbal, Snottywong, and KuwarOnline, I think the current name defines a scope that is both meaningful and manageable. When one starts to create a list, it becomes apparent that the frequency of name changes for features like airports, universities, notable streets, lakes, etc., is surprisingly high. (For an example, see List of university and college name changes in the United States. The length of that list, which has a fairly narrow scope and actually is very incomplete, is one thing that leads me to think that renamings are far too commonplace to be documented in broad-scope lists.) A list that attempted to include all such name changes in India over the last 60+ years would be unmanageably large -- and largely trivial. IMO, this list should continue to be limited to cities and states that have been given new "Indian names" since independence. There may be merit in creating other focused lists of renamings -- such as "List of Indian institutions named for Indira Gandhi" or "List of renamed roads in Bangalore" (or should that be "List of renamed roads in Bengaluru"?), but for the benefit of both contributors and users, each list should have a relatively narrow scope. --Orlady (talk) 20:45, 11 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

And probably more that I've missed, in particular the AfD discussion mentioned, but which I cannot find. But the first was overwritten by the move, and the second explains a lot. Andrewa (talk) 14:29, 5 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

As far as Indian lists are concerned there are at least three. There should only be one. That should be reserved for here. There is also a list at List of city name changes and also (STILL) one at Renaming of cities in India. There may be more... This is crazy. One list would cut down a lot on administration and make the whole process of cataloguing more efficient. In addition we should think of formatting the list in a way that would lend itself to downloading onto a spreadsheet. BeckenhamBear (talk) 15:01, 14 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
