Population count
editThe population counts on this page disagree with the population counts on some of the linked state pages. This should be fixed and we should footnote the census year that was chosen. --Meara 11:53, 19 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Population stats per State/UT in this table have been normalised & corrected to reflect the published final figures for the 2001 Census of India.--cjllw | TALK 04:11, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
- I've corrected a couple of misplaced commas (Rural Pop.), several percentages and reranked 22 and 23 so 22 has more people than 23. Glenn L (talk) 21:39, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- The Urban and rural population for the state Andhra Pradesh seem to be not right — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ashwin.reddy (talk • contribs) 11:10, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
Union Territories to be split from the states
editPondy et al are UTs and not states and will confuse someone new to Indian geography. I suggest that UTs be given a separate article or a new table atleast to avoid confusion. For eg. in the article Pondicherry, it is listed as the second largest by population, but here it shows the rankings of only the states and the UTs are given a mere "-". Pl look into this someone. --Idleguy 14:20, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Sex ratio of Uttar Pradesh misprinted
editIt should be 899:1000 instead 100:1000. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 113.193.159.33 (talk) 04:13, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Query about Wikipedia policy on adding useful links
editWe are working towards raising awareness on inequality among Indian states. We feel that this will eventually lead to elections focused on development issues. At present we provide comparison of states on number of topics mainly through map and single point of data. We want to add our page on population of states, http://statemaps.org/india/state_population/ as useful link on article page. Please suggest what is Wikipedia policy regarding this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hobbescalvin (talk • contribs) 17:35, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
Punjab - 15th or 16th?
editAccording to p 20 of this census handbook, Punjab was 15th. Our article says 16th. Is this handbook wrong? - Sitush (talk) 03:08, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- Neither, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana was split up in this article which pushes all states below 12th down by 1 rank. I don't know how the resulting population was calculated, maybe somebody went to the trouble of finding the district-wise populations and added them up to get Telangana's population. —Gazoth (talk) 13:09, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
Table with percentages is missing proportion for Uttar Pradesh
editIt seems most peculiar that the percentage of people in the largest state is not indicated in the table. Probably an oversight but the value could even be calculated if it is not in the source data.
