Record totals don't add up

edit

I believe there are 82 events, 42 short course and 40 long course, which are listed in the article yet the "by nation" chart totals 89. So what is going on? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.169.71.227 (talk) 03:42, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Now it's corrected. Thank you. Next time maybe it's up to you. Montell 74 (talk) 07:18, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Women's 50 LCM Back record (3/28 & 3/29)

edit

As noted on the Backstroke page, we should keep track the double record set by Leila Vaziri in the 50 Back, since she swam a 28.16 in semifinals at world champs, and then followed it up with a 28.16 in finals. I also noted that the finals record was in finals, since both records were at the same meet (to disambiguate), even though the presumption is that records are set in finals or timed finals. –Pakman044 14:26, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

This item is moot as the records have been superceded. –Pakman044 20:24, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Duel in the Pool 4/3/2007 - Lenton 100 LCM Freestyle Record rejected

edit

Just a note to everyone that Libby Lenton's 100 LCM Freestyle leadoff split of 52.99 in the 400 LCM Mixed Free Relay at Duel in the Pool was rejected by FINA (see Footnote 2). Please do not revert this record to 52.99L unless 1) FINA gives evidence that they've changed their mind, or 2) someone else breaks the record. It doesn't matter that 53.30 is slower than 52.99, but rather it matters what FINA says the record is. –Pakman044 07:14, 27 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Asterisks (*)

edit

Note, if a time has an asterisk (*) next to it, please leave the asterisk next to the time until the FINA world record website reflects the new record. Thanks! –Pakman044 01:51, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Long course: what is it?

edit

Long course = LC Short course = SC What are long and short courses? Could someone elaborate or provide a link? Thanks. Pgr94 08:18, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not a problem. Long course is the distance of pool you will see in the Olympics: the length of the pool is 50 meters long (USA Swimming elaborates that the pool can also be 55 yards in length, which is just over 50m). A short course pool is half of that: 25 meters. You will frequently see a distinction made as to whether the pool is short course meters (25 meters) or short course yards (25 yards) in the United States.
This does of course make a differnce--when you swim, you are never going at a faster speed than when you are coming off of a wall. In long course, there are half as many turns/pushes off of a wall than in short course, and the distance between them is doubled (e.g., in a 400 meter freestyle, there will be 7 turns in long course, whereas there will be 15 in short course). –Pakman044 21:29, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clear explanation. I didn't know that that there were records for 25m pools. Pgr94 21:48, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
FYI: long course and short course work. -- Hooperswim (talk) 19:16, 25 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

New Ziegler 800 & 1500 Short Course records

edit

Just as a note, the Ziegler records in the 800 & 1500 short course freestyle were set during the same event. You can set a record at a shorter distance by rule during a longer event, although this is highly unusual. The event was the 1500 meter freestyle, and the 800 meter record was broken along the way. –Pakman044 21:31, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

See FINA SW 12.9. Intermediate distance generally implies an intermediate distance from the start of the race, not from any given point in the race (compare with USA Swimming rules, which use the term "initial distance"). The event must be completed without disqualification in order to achieve the split time. –Pakman044 05:07, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
This is now a moot point as Ziegler has broken the 800 record in the actual event this time (8:08.00). –Pakman044 16:53, 14 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

No 4x50 m Freestyle Relay records

edit

I reverted recent additions of 4x50 meter Freestyle Relay records. Per FINA rules, there are no world records in these events (FINA SW 12.1 and SW 12.2); see also the FINA Swimming records page. –Pakman044 (talk) 16:33, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Can we add 4x50 free and 4x50 medley with a caveat that they are not ratified by FINA? At the end of the day, a WR in this relays exists, even if it is not recognized by FINA. I understand we should prevent the addition of other unconventional distances, should we make another article? --Marra (talk) 08:24, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, as FINA recognizes/tracks the Swimming World Records, there really are no World Records in 4x50 relays. There are World Best Times, which are occasionally listed as a "World Record" (like at SC Europeans); however, these aren't "World Records" and can/have/do ignore swims/times, as no one entity really tracks all possibilities. (e.g. Several 4x50 times from the 2000 and 2004 NCAA meets in the USA were faster than the record times listed in the SC European meets around that time but not shown -- even when all the swimmers on a relay were of one nationality.) -- Hooperswim (talk) 19:23, 25 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Just about there

edit

I have just found a reliable online reference for Janet Evans 800 metre long course record set on the final night of the 1989 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo on 20 August 1989 - the oldest record in swimming. This now means that all 82 records have a suitable reference which is online! I have just finished updating the records that were set at the US Olympic Trails and I have just added links to the newly created world record progression articles. Only the 800 metre freestyle and the three relays articles are yet to be created. Once they are, and once the lead is expanded and a appropriate image is added I would say that it will be ready to go WP:PR before then going to WP:FLC. What do you guys think? -- Ianblair23 (talk) 01:28, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

List only ratified records

edit

The article states, "Below is a list of current swimming world records as ratified by the international governing body FINA." However, there are several records listed that are not ratified. I know for a fact three records by Bousquet, Bernard, and Irie are not yet ratified because they were wearing the not approved Arena swimsuit.--Philipmj24 (talk) 12:12, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have adjusted the lead section of this article to clarify what the list includes. It is essentially a list of ratified records along with those which have been reported in the media since FINA's last record ratification meeting. Records which have not yet been ratified are marked with a '#' symbol and this is made clear in the legends under each table. Yboy83 (talk) 20:30, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Short Course Yards

edit

are there any world records for scy?? i cant find any web site with that info. btw, what is (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Populer208 (talkcontribs)

FINA, the international governing body of the sport, only recognises world records set in 50 metre and 25 metre pools, hence there are no official world records for short course yards. (UTC is "Coordinated Universal Time") Yboy83 (talk) 13:07, 5 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Also, most countries do not swim yards (the USA is a notable exception). -- Hooperswim (talk) 19:25, 25 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Reference Audit

edit

I've just done an audit of the references in this article, and the following require attention:

  • Referenced news article/webpage no longer exists at the URL provided:
    • Men's LC: 50m Fly
    • Women's LC: 200m Free, 100m Back
    • Men's SC: 800m Free
    • Women's SC: 50m Breast, 100m Breast/100m Fly, 4x100m Medley
  • Non English reference:
    • Women's SC: 4x200m Free
  • Inaccurate reference URL:
    • Women's SC: 200m Breast
  • References which are the results lists of the meet: (I think perhaps these would be better to be news articles from third party sources?)
    • Women's LC: 50m Free, 50m Fly
    • Men's SC: 200m Free, 50m Back, 50m Breast, 100m Breast
    • Women's SC: 50m Fly

This would be a great article for WP:FL status, though I think it would fail by not being sufficiently stable (in the currently world record breaking super-suit frenzy), but we should still aim to meet the other requirements, including creation of a more engaging the lead section, and fixing these references.

Post here and <s>strike through</s> events for which you have fixed the references. Yboy83 (talk) 22:03, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

World records - individual records

edit

I would like that someone who has the information inputs it in the table.

Swimmer Σ Individual 4x
Σ 50m 25m Free Back Brea But Medl
[[]] 5x
[[]] 7x

Inputs would be Men/Women, one for each, most total WRs, most WRs in 50m pool, most WRs in backstroke, most WRs in relay... There would be maximum of 20 swimmers.

The way to input the table would be the following: If swimmer A has most records in 50m pool we enter that number, and that number only - number of WRs in each of the disciplines is not inputted. If swimmer B has most total records we input that number and that number only. It would look like the example above. 213.149.61.74 (talk) 16:51, 27 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Record holders' rankings

edit

I am sure the list is not complete and I am not sure the list is accurate (if the list is what I assume it is; if not whoever did it should explain what it is about in the article). For example Croatian swimmers held 7 WRs (all in 25m pool). Duje Draganja (1x, free 50m), Gordan Kožulj (1x, backstroke 200m), Miloš Milošević (1x, 50m butterfly), Sanja Jovanović (4x, backstroke 50m) 213.149.51.200 (talk) 18:02, 28 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Super Suit Era Records

edit

I would like to see those records that were set during the super suit era better highlighted - When full body suits whose friction was lower than that of human skin. 123.211.203.202 (talk) 23:53, 25 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Codes not explained

edit

The codes "ss" and "=" (and maybe others) are used in the |recordinfo= parameter here, but they are not explained in the legend. I have asked for help at the appropriate template talk page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:12, 14 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Kolesnikov record

edit

User:KhanSwim, your addition of Kolesnikov's record is not consensus. This is a list of records and best results on FINA ratified competitions, not random ones. If you want to add this record, please add a reference where it is clear that FINA ratifies it. Hatifnatter (talk) 11:18, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

User:KhanSwim, your information from SwimSwam article: “Although Russian swimmers are currently banned from competing in all FINA events, the global governing body has said that as long as all FINA rules are followed, world records set at the competition will stand up as official.”https://swimswam.com/kliment-kolesnikov-blasts-22-11-to-set-new-world-record-in-50-back-scm/ is amazing, but it has a key reservation "as long as all FINA rules are followed". Only FINA can confirm whether they are followed in Kazan or not. Let's wait for a confirmation from FINA that it is the case. (And please look for consensus here before making changes in the articles.) Hatifnatter (talk) 13:03, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Surely in light of this it would be a good idea to list both Manaudou's official world record and Kolesnikov's unratified WR (with the # tag that signifies it's awaiting ratification) Matt17br (talk) 17:10, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Someone messing with the records

edit

Someone recently messed with several records in the article. LCM 50,100, and 200 Breast and 100 Fly are incorrect. There may be others. I don't want to make things worse so I'll just leave this out there for someone else to address. 2600:4040:46D7:B200:94C3:9CE7:B6F5:F82F (talk) 16:42, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Photo caption wrong

edit

The picture is of Katie Ledecky, not Sarah Sjostrom. Picture should be replaced. Bholleman (talk) 18:20, 28 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I fixed this with the picture from Sjostrom's main page. Also corrected the spelling of her name so the link would work. Bholleman (talk) 19:21, 28 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
