editThis is a rather racist page isn't it? We dont have a list of Whites page.--My help is needed 22:21, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- Take note that we do have a List of English Americans, List of German Americans, List of Italian Americans, List of French Americans, List of Irish Americans, and so on, and so forth. So no, it's not a racist page at all. Calgary 00:32, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
Why this is not a candidate for speedy deletion
editI was about to propose deletion of this article based on this prior discussion, but then I noticed that this is not a pure list, it is a list of lists, and I think that is alright. Just wanted to point that out, since I'm sure other folks involved in that long drawn-out AfD will have the same impulse ;D --Jaysweet 22:18, 5 July 2007 (UTC) 206.252.160.20 02:15, 21 September 2007 (UTC) This is all ridiculous. This list is not racist, its useful I can speak for many people who rely on this list - for example I write a black culture blog. This DOES NOT call for deletion! 206.252.160.20 02:15, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

A list for African-American
editI think the reason of have a list of African-Americans is because, obviously, can not know the origins of most of them, because their ancestors were exported from many different areas of West and central Africa before of that European countries divided Africa(nineteeth century) and now, they are very mixed. So that is now difficult to know the origins of each. However, we also have list of black Africans and Afro-Caribbeans in the United States by ancestries, since in this case we can set. Although it is true that the list of Africans Americans also includes some names of people who descendent from black inmigrants from the XX and XXI century and who do Know their origins. At least that's my opinion.--Isinbill (talk) 22:52, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Prominent African Americans in Business?
editI wonder if someone could create a page listing prominent african americans in business, and link to that page from this page (perhaps in the "other" section?). Here are two recommendations for people to put on the list:
Edward T. Welburn Robert L. Johnson
I think it would also make sense to list prominent African Americans in public service, starting with President Obama, and African Americans in Education, which might include Geoffrey Canada of the Harlem Children's Zone. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.244.3.138 (talk) 11:27, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Entertainers?
editHow about a list of African Americans in show business, for example actors and singers? And I just noticed the sportspeople are also missing. To name a few: Halle Berry, Samuel L. Jackson, Beyonce, Carl Lewis for starters. 85.217.46.172 (talk) 18:42, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
- Also models are missing, Tyra Banks probably the most prominent. There is List of black fashion models, but it includes all, not just Americans. I could not find any list of black singers or actors. 82.141.74.33 (talk) 03:31, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Lists of African Americans → Lists of African-Americans – to conform with Wikipedia tradition. Ottawahitech (talk) 04:42, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:HYPHEN. I'm not sure about Wikipedia tradition but English tradition holds that hyphens are used for compound modifiers, i.e. when the phrase acts as an adjective and there is another noun following it (e.g., African-American history), but not the nouns themselves (e.g., African American). — AjaxSmack 11:13, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Writers
editWhat an arbitrary list of lists? Where are the writers, the academics, the scientists, etc. etc.
It's not necessarily racist to have such a list, but its paucity feels a little racist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rev. H. Carlton Earwiggherd (talk • contribs) 21:24, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
- just added some more already-extant lists (from Category:Lists of African-American people).--71.167.157.25 (talk) 01:52, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
Fictional character list removed
editI removed the fictional character list as it should be within its own page. Fictional characters hold the potential to raise negative stereotypes and belong on a separate page. Solidzz (talk) 12:55, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

List of lists
editThis article is itself not a list of lists (which would be implied by the "Lists" in the title; as opposed to "List"). It has sections, which each have a list - so in that it is multiple lists - but the individual people, are linked from this article directly. In this format, it's different from most of the other pages in List of lists of lists. I think it should either be removed from List of lists of lists, or it should be broken out so that each of its sections are instead pages; and this page is just a link to those.
Compare Lists of celebrities - it doesn't contain Vanessa Carlton - but it instead has a link to List of singer-songwriters which has her on it (N.B. some of the items on lists of celebrities are themselves lists of lists, e.g. Lists of actors - which doesn't have Anthony Hopkins but instead has List of actors who played the President of the United States). Similarly, Lists of African Americans, should not contain Ray Charles, but that section should be broken out and just link to List of African-American Musicians (or something like that). OR - the title should be changed List of African Americans. Kaldosh (talk) 13:51, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- I agree. I'm going to go ahead and remove the List of lists category and remove the page from List of lists of lists. I'm not going to bother filing a WP:RM to change the title to "List of..." because I think the best ultimate solution will be to actually turn it into a list of lists (in its current state, it's way too long and hard to navigate). I don't expect it to get done soon though. I spent some time trying to do a similar refactor for List of awards, and it is just an insane amount of tedious work. :( Colin M (talk) 05:29, 3 November 2019 (UTC)
Problem remains
editIt's pretty weird for an article "Lists of..." to begin with "This is a list of". If I knew how to fix it I would, but I don't. Maybe someone else does. deisenbe (talk) 08:17, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
Question on whether Elon Musk shall be included
editHi everyone, given Elon Musk in born and raised in South Africa, and immigrate to US later on, should we include him in the list? xinbenlv Talk, Remember to "ping" me 19:31, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
- Nooooo. African American doesn't mean just anyone from Africa. The paleface is one of them thar South African Americans. Clarityfiend (talk) 06:54, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
Too many rappers.
editPlease remove some rappers. Rappers aren’t educational. Some of the rappers in this aren’t notable.
Take off some of the rappers and add businesspeople, scientists, inventors, politicians, actors etc.
editRappers aren’t significant to be included in this list. Add inventors, actors, artists, painters, politicians etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:8001:401:63B4:1010:99F0:B041:1211 (talk) 07:46, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
Criminals?
editHow about a list on famous and well known African American criminals?

Aren't African Americans supposed to be purely negroid descendants of slaves?
editAre people born in Africa but live in America also African Americans or African Americans should solely be black descendants of American slaves?
