editDoes anybody know some of the background to the Lleu/Llew controversy? I think it might be helpful to have a short section on this... QuartierLatin1968 21:59, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
Im a native Welsh speaker, I have corrected the tale of Lleu (not Llew! That's a 19th century mispelling!!!) as he appears in the Mabinogion. I have removed all the recently added material regarding Lleu as the constellation Perseus, because this is not based on any historic or folkloric fact and is in reality just a purely speculative modern theory, probably created by whoever posted it.
I have used my own words in the summary of this tale, translating the quotations from Modern Welsh and using as a source Dafydd and Rhiannon Ifans Modern Welsh adaptation of Y Mabinogion (published by Gomer, 1980). By "adaptation" I mean "linguistic update", as the original text was written in Medieval Welsh.
Thanks for the correction on the spelling of Lleu. He's not a lion, after all.
A few other things are missing from this summary of the Fourth Branch, especially concerning the pigs. The pigs that Gwydion and Gilfaethwy steal from Pryderi were also a gift to Pryderi from Arawn, king of Otherworld, and thus the animals had an association with that realm. It was also a pig that led Gwydion to Lleu in eagle form in the boughs of the oak. Given these pigs' association with death and the Otherworld in this text and elsewhere in Welsh myth and legend, that a pig leads Gwydion to Lleu (plus the fact that the eagle is shedding rotten flesh) suggests that Lleu actually has died. - You might have seen the flag for the preview of some articles because of vandalism. It's been reverted and fixed now. Nardog (talk) 07:56, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
