I remember stepping up into a Q stock train regularly on the District line at Wimbledon on my way to school. Often choosing the older train over the newer one parked on the next platform well into 1970. Hi Trumpetrousers. I moved to the talk page as this where we discuss the articles. The article is referenced, and No. 4 (shown by the [4]) Bruce 1983 pp. 87, 144, confirms that the Q stock (except for the Q38 stock that was now R38 stock, having been converted, and the trains running on the East London line) was withdrawn after the introduction of the C69 stock. I found this, so it would appear that they were officially withdrawn in November 1971. I would think that your 1970s train was a car of Q38 that had been converted into R38 stock. There were 208 cars of Q38 stock, comprising 25 motors and 183 trailers. Three of the trailers were scrapped in 1941 following bomb damage, but most trailers were converted to other types at one time or another - in the 1947-59 period, 132 Q38 trailers became R38 motors; and in the 1958-60 period, 17 Q38 trailers became COP trailers; a further 8 were converted to COP trailers later on. The 25 Q38 motors and the 23 remaining Q38 trailers were still in service at the time that delivery of the C69 stock commenced; of these, 14 motors and 14 trailers were on the East London Line, and were the last to remain in service, being withdrawn in September 1971, so presumably 11 Q38 motors and 9 Q38 trailers running on the District (in company with older Q stock) were withdrawn prior to that. The last CO/CP stock were withdrawn in March 1981, and some COP trailers converted from Q38 trailers may have been among the final withdrawals.
