Is that really a fact?

edit

"Lucy Liu won't do Mad TV for free."

I mean i'm sure there are others who won't is that really a big deal

Chinese immigrants or Taiwanese immigrants

edit

Ok, we seem to have two conflicting sources. One says her parents are Chinese immigrants, the other says they are Taiwanese immigrants. I suggest we just delete that info about where her parents are from until we find more authoritative sources on that. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 17:19, 6 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I suggest you leave it as it is. Sources are there, have this one for free [1], I'll add it now. magnius (talk) 17:25, 6 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok that's fine. That's a much better source. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 17:33, 6 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
On the Late Late Show she explicitely states that her parents were not from Taiwan but vom Beijing and Shanghai. [2] at 5:00 minutes. 93.104.60.160 (talk) 15:39, 21 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

her parents were born in china and moved to Taiwan as the result of Chinese Civil War, so she is Chinese, and there are strong indication that so think herself as ethnic Chinese. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.236.46.156 (talk) 05:36, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

No, SHE is American, having been born in the United States. She may be of Chinese descent, but she herself is an American.JackFloridian (talk) 21:33, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
If being born in the USA makes you an American socially, then why are bilingual Spanish-speaking people born in the US still called Latinos or Hispanics? 213.1.15.71 (talk) 14:50, 24 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think people are referring to her genetics and not her political nationality, after all White Americans are Europeans. 213.1.15.71 (talk) 14:29, 24 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Except those who are from Asia. Oops...JackFloridian (talk) 03:13, 9 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Note that there are good reasons to distinguish to distinguish nowadays between taiwanese and (mainland) chinese, however both groups are ethnically (han) chinese.--Kmhkmh (talk) 18:18, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ethnicity is more than just country. There is a percentage of Han Chinese but not all that live in those countries are Han Chinese. 71.255.94.138 (talk) 21:58, 11 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
There is a difference in attitude in the USA and China. In China, the "minorities" people, most of whom are racially Mongoloids and are therefore largely indistinguishable from each other (eg Han, Tibetan, Manchu, Mongolian, Zhuang, Tai, etc), and some who are not Mongoloids, eg Uighurs and Tajiks, all of whom are Chinese, with the minority peoples given favourable treatment compared to the majority Han Chinese, that is the minority peoples are positively discriminated. In the USA, there is still a strong attitude held by the a significant proportion of the majority white European population that they are superior to all other races living in the USA. Minority peoples are not given preferential treatment as they are in China, and in fact socially they are negatively discriminated, and they still generally live in ghettoes, and in the case of Native Americans in reservations, which as all know are areas of great deprivation. Therefore the difference in the treatment of minority peoples in the USA and China is that in China they are positively discriminated, whereas in the USA they are negatively discriminated. 213.1.15.71 (talk) 14:46, 24 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Because of immature edit warring by various editors, we'll have to do the same thing here that we did for the article on Jeremy Lin, by compromising and stating "Taiwanese or Chinese descent".
And just for the record, attempting to apply labels on individuals is quite immature, and both Lucy and Jeremy are not Taiwanese or Chinese. They are American. It's as simple as that. Being "descended" from a particular country is of no importance when that doesn't even define them in the way that some people attempt to do so. What I see is immature behavior by some particular Han Chinese (including diaspora) from either China or Taiwan, or Asian Americans attempting to cling to some sort of group identity and "claim" people to be part of them. Yet it's not about the group identity, but rather the individual and that's what's important in this article about Lucy Liu. She is not some sort of "representative", so just stop yourself before you try to push your views on these individuals, and stop trying to "be proud" for others' achievements. 68.105.192.216 (talk) 08:04, 11 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

How to include that Lucy Liu probably had plastic surgery (implants)?

edit

The following issue is delicate but I think it should be addressed in the Wikipedia page so that especially Asian women get an honest impression of Lucy's feastures. The movie 'Flypaper' contains a famous scene where 'Dot' (Lucy) makes love among snakes. I am certainly not an expert on the matter, but the shape of her visible breast seems unnatural. Especially when compared to the earlier movie 'City of Industry' (probably shot in 1996) there also appears to be more tissue.

Here's a comment from a woman I found [1] :

Even Lucy Liu had implants - she went with a very small size. See the difference : BEFORE: http://www.celebritymoviearchive.com/tour/movie.php/1393 and after: http://www.celebritymoviearchive.com/tour/movie.php/6597 even when she lays down her implants stay very round and high (normal tissue would flatten and fall apart)

As she had the surgery (probably) so early in her career (~1997), there is no official reference to be found. The only proof are scenes from the movie. How would it be best to include this information on the Wiki-page? BennyWhite68 (talk) 19:43, 23 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

It would be best not to include it without a reliable source. See WP:BLP and WP:OR --Ian Dalziel (talk) 22:43, 23 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

It may also be concluded from comparing her High School pic that she has had eye surgery. 149.254.250.217 (talk) 12:51, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Or we could include actual facts and cite sources. Yeah, let's do that. - SummerPhD (talk) 01:29, 4 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

"How to include" some typical racist speculations that this or that Asian woman couldn't have breasts like that or eyes like that? Here's how: plant it on the Talk Page. Move to delete this as violating half a dozen WP rules. Profhum (talk) 21:20, 15 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Dates of her parents

edit

What are these dates? I can only assume they're birth/death, but they are certainly wrong. While I didn't do an exhaustive search because I'm not a Wikipedia editor, I know her Mom was alive in 1999. Someone should check their sources and try again.

She is the youngest of three children born to Cecilia (1925–1986), who worked as a biochemist, and Tom Liu (1913–1975), a trained civil engineer who sold digital clock pens. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.84.26.243 (talk) 00:03, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Unverified year of graduation. Age when discovered.

edit

Under Early Years she's described as graduating from high school in 1986. Although that's likely (as would be 1987), there's no age or date provided for that in the source so I deleted it.

Under 1990-99, she was discovered at the age of 21. Around 3 min 20 seconds into the video source, she clearly says she was 19 years old. It's correct now.

Last name - marginal note

edit

Currently very early in the article we have "This is a Chinese name; the family name is Liu." - given that the title is (first name) (last name), which is the same convention as English speaking names I'm not sure why this marginal note is necessary. Did it date from an early version of the article where the last name came first or something? Jethro 82 (talk) 18:57, 21 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Middle name

edit

"In high school, she adopted a middle name, Alexis." So why does the infobox say that her birth name was "Lucy Alexis Liu"? SkywalkerEccleston (talk) 08:58, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
