Handshake (edit request on 11 February 2012)

Would like to edit in, on the racial controversy section, that some video evidence has surfaced that may show Suarez attempted initially to shake Evra's hand, but appeared to be rebuffed. Sbrown5089 (talk) 23:13, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Do you have a source for this? Remember, that if it's just "I saw it, clear as day on the TV", then you're more than likely right, but it constitutes original research. Achowat (talk) 23:15, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
While a few of the pro-Liverpool and/or anti-Man Utd blogs claim to have video evidence supporting the above, every single reliable media source that I have seen supports the claim that Suarez declined Evra's offer of a handshake.Sennen Goroshi ! (talk) 06:40, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Watch the video From the video (and others), It seems that Suarez holds his hand at the same height while moving toward Evra, going for a handshake. Evra retracted his hand further after the previous handshake. His hand only came up after Suarez's hand passed his - but everyone was moving at the same speed, and Suarez's hand didn't dodge. To me, it actually looks like Evra refused to shake Suarez's hand, then after Suarez went past, he lifted his hand to make it look like it was Suarez that refused his handshake. Not to mention the whole lifting of Suarez's arm and the staring-into-the-camera as if to scream "DID YOU SEE THAT?" Gives me the impression that Evra created a previously nonexistent situation, then milked the incident for all it was worth.
Who didn't shake whose hand? It might not be such a clear-cut issue. Lkc159 (talk) 11:30, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
I've seen the video and to me it looks 100% as if Evra offered his hand and Suarez refused to shake it. However, that is not important, because that is original research. What is important are reliable unbiased sources, are there any reliable sources (ie. not LFC related blogs) that are saying that Evra refused the handshake? I could probably find at least fifty reliable media sources that all confirm it was Suarez who refused to shake Evra's hand. Unless there are reliable sources saying it was Evra who refused the handshake, I guess the article has to say it was Suarez. Sennen Goroshi ! (talk) 14:15, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

In addition to the above, Suarez has since apologised for not shaking Evra's hand: "I should have shaken Patrice Evra's hand before the game and I want to apologise for my actions."
and the managing director of Liverpool has stated: "We are extremely disappointed Luis Suarez did not shake hands with Patrice Evra before yesterday's game. The player had told us beforehand that he would, but then chose not to do so." So it seem s as if the entire planet, apart from a handful of biased Liverpool fans, thinks that it was Suarez who avoided the handshake, not Evra. Sennen Goroshi ! (talk) 15:43, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

It is evident, even to a passing insect, that Evra momentarily withdrew his hand. Still image Video Suarez took this as a visual clue to move on to the next player, thinking "f**k you then." A contrived press statement, intended to sweep the affair under the rug, does not alter reality. However, you are correct that none of this matters lacking a reliable source, which have thus far failed to appear. — ThePowerofX 15:57, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
I would imagine if there was any way for Suarez/Liverpool to defuse this situation and put the blame on Evra, they would both jump at the chance and claim that Evra withdrew his hand. The photo is convincing apart from the fact that it doesn't show the timing, the video is far less convincing. It is all rather amusing though, because all I see are three Liverpool fans claiming their player is innocent and one Man Utd fan (me) saying Suarez was to blame. Sometimes loyalty blinds us from the obvious. Sennen Goroshi ! (talk) 16:13, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
A motion-picture press briefing is not a good idea at this point. Pressure is building. The way to defuse the situation is to force an apology and move forward. Look at the video a second time. Patrice Evra keeps his hand the same height and distance until Luis Suarez approaches. Evra then pulls his hand closer to his midriff. It's possible that he simply wanted Suarez to pause or slow down, look him directly in the eye, and shake his hand with conviction. But Suarez, who is unhesitating, misreads his intention and both players get angry with each other. The sports blogs have identified this miscommunication but the press (reliable sources) have not. — ThePowerofX 17:06, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Not done: It sounds like this is original research. You need to find a reliable source which interprets the actions and then you can ask to have the observation included. Thanks, Celestra (talk) 17:22, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Not that it matter which blogs as far as Wikipedia is concerned, but I have only seen pro-Liverpool blogs saying that it was Evra who avoided the handshake. I'm sure the numerous anti-MUFC blogs will have similar comments, are there any generally neutral blogs saying the same? Either way, as a Utd fan the final outcome was great, Utd won, Suarez looks like an idiot and no-one really cares about Evra's over enthusiastic celebrations. Sennen Goroshi !   Partly done: These three goals against Chile were for the U-23 Olympic team. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's not the full national team, so I don't think this cap and goals count for his national team tally. The same will be the case for all the Olympic matches. It looks to me like this match and these goals were added to the U-23 line in his infobox. Strafpeloton2 (talk) 00:03, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Fixi88 (talk) 21:09, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Not done: Suarez was transferred before the end of the season but he made enough appearances to earn a medal. This was referenced before and I brought back the reference and found a new one. Strafpeloton2 (talk) 03:04, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

That's a joke playing, enough games doesn't means you earned a medal. You have to be under contract to win a medal and if you are a player of liverpool you don't become a champion with Ajax. Second Ajax was not at place one at the time he made the transfer. Third he was banned for seven games for biting the opponent so he didn't play many games. I removed it myself — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fixi88 (talkcontribs) 19:02, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

To further make my case he earned a medal because he received one from Ajax. That's because he was a important player but that a different story. Emanuelson played a lot a games too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fixi88 (talkcontribs) 19:07, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Just a reminder, the standard we're going for here is verifiable facts from credible sources. There are credible sources that verify he won a medal, so please don't remove those verifiable facts. Here's a source from the Daily Mail and another one from Liverpool. Strafpeloton2 (talk) 23:55, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

He recieved the medal, indeed but it doesn't fall under honours. If you are not under contract with the team, it doesn't count as honours.Fixi88 (talk) 14:48, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Ajax gave him a medal because he contributed to winning the league, even if he wasn't on the team at the end of the season. I don't know the circumstances, but maybe he contributed to wins when he was on the team that would have otherwise been losses. Those points would contribute equally to the total Ajax needed to win the league as the ones Ajax earned after Suarez left. Dion Dublin won a medal for Man U and only played seven games. It's not up to me or anyone else to determine if honoring each player is justified or not, it is really up to the club who they decide to honor when they win the league, though if you can find a verifiable source that says otherwise, I'm happy to get rid of the Ajax honor. Strafpeloton2 (talk) 19:43, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Shut up Fixi you clown. Suarez played enough games to earn a medal, therefore he deserved a medal. It falls under honours as he played half the season at Ajax before moving to Liverpool.--86.46.162.35 (talk) 04:41, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Reaction to Strafpeloton2, find a source that says that Luis Suarez with Ajax wins the eredivisie. You won,t. The only thing you'll find is that he was given a winner's medal from Ajax. Therefore it should be adressed to the section individual awards.Fixi88 (talk) 21:59, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Here is a source that says he has honors for the 2010–11 Eredivisie. By your reasoning, do only the players who played in the last game for the league champion win the league? What if they're hurt? Then they're not with the team. Ajax had 73 points that year. Suarez certainly contributed to some of them. They didn't get all of them on the last day, or after the New Year when he was at Liverpool. The Premier League only requires a player to play 10 games for the league champion (see the intro of this page; Suarez played 13 games at Ajax). I know that's not the same as the Eredivisie, but it shows there are rules indicating you don't need to be with the team at the end of the year (e.g. Henrik Larsson, 2007). You keep erasing the sources I provide without providing any of your own to show that you're not just stating your opinion that you don't think he should be honored. Handy player

Is this worth including? --John (talk) 22:36, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

I don't see why not, especially Rodgers' defence of "It's not his job to own up". Although, the Manfield comments are probably not as important. Starship.paint (talk) 23:12, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
I can see why not. WP:UNDUE and WP:RECENT. It's a minor happening in a minor game. People are going to write blog posts about it today, but 3 months from now, no one will care. Achowat (talk) 00:24, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
"Minor happening" -> Handball directly led to goal, said goal proved as the decisive goal in the 2-1 win. "Minor game" -> knock-out tournament match, FA Cup is all the more important because Liverpool are not in title contention? Also, "blog posts" are not equal to newspaper articles. Also, Suarez is one of the most controversial footballers in the world; a with fellow controversial League players Mario Balotelli and John Terry, footballers with controversial incidents in the past tend to be cited for previous incidents when future incidents occur, so the "3 months now, no one will care" argument does not seem very valid to me. See article on Suarez, article on Balotelli, article on John Terry. Starship.paint (talk) 05:39, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
If we include the Rodgers comments, and I think we should, then we should clearly also include the opposition manager's comments for balance. GedUK  21:57, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Hmm, upon further reflection, I do agree that we should add the opposition manager's comments. Starship.paint (talk) 23:02, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
So can we come to a conclusion of sorts? Seems like we have three in favour and one not in favour. I can provide yet another article that such controversial incidents will be raised up again and again in the future. Unless there is some form of rebuttal to my arguments... Starship.paint (talk) 03:18, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
Fine with me. If it becomes less controversial over time, we can take it out. GedUK  12:55, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Liverpool singh: Removed biasd information from questionable sources

This edit of Liverpool singh has according to him, "Removed biasd information from questionable sources". He has removed information from the FA's report, The Guardian and BBC Sport. He removed such information... "although the panel overseeing the investigation were independent of the FA.", Guardian says " Appointed by the FA, the members of the panel were nevertheless independent from it –". He followed by deleting BBC's direct quotes of the FA's report, such as "FA rejected this claim as being "unsustainable and simply incredible given that the players were engaged in an acrimonious argument."" and "The panel concluded that "Suárez's use of the term [negro] was not intended as an attempt at conciliation or to establish rapport; neither was it meant in a conciliatory and friendly way." Suárez was also warned that two similar offences in the future could lead to "a permanent suspension"." Singh went on to remove Liverpool's comment directly quoted by BBC that the case against Suarez was "was ultimately unsubstantiated", as well as a statement and a source from the Guardian showing that Ian Ayre from Liverpool had condemned Suarez. Starship.paint (talk) 04:17, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Instead, Singh went on to add unsourced statements like "Video evidence later showed Evra withdrawing his hand before the handshake was supposed to take place." 'This was despite no video, audio or anecdotal evidence being able to be produced backing up Evra's claims." I wonder where's the bias here? You can't just removed sourced statements and their sources, add unsourced statements and shoot off Guardian and BBC Sport as being unreliable. Starship.paint (talk) 04:17, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
If Singh can prove Guardian and BBC unreliable/biased, then by all means, remove the info. Starship.paint (talk) 04:17, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Guardian and BBC are reliable sources. Perhaps the issue is WP:NPOV. Let's see what the other editor has to say. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:56, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
I don't have a massive problem with the removal of the Guardian reference as it is a ref to a blog rather than a newspaper article and, whilst I accept newspapers still report subjectively, blogs do so all the more. If this ref is to be included, I would like to see it sourced multiple times to support reliability. the removal of the BBC reffed element seems unnecessary as it is a direct quote to e news report from a reliable source. The changes to the FA report seem more dubious, although the ref remains, they appear deliberately to have provided a slanted view. Arguably the initial wording was equally slanted. I would suggest a combination of both versions is required to provide a genuine NPOV. Fenix down (talk) 16:31, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Fenix down, the Guardian reference removed was not a blog. They were direct quotes of statements from Ian Ayre, Suarez, Daglish and United. The reference was used to source Ayre's words. Starship.paint (talk) 09:01, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Both sources are absolutely fine, as was the original wording. The panel was independent, no question, and any direct quotes from the panel's report should remain, due to their nature as a primary source being reported by a secondary source. – PeeJay 23:35, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Wording of Ivanovic incident

The current description of the Ivanovic incident ("he appeared to bite opposing player Branislav Ivanovic") implies that there is some ambiguity around whether or not Suarez actually bit Ivanovic. yeah why not? Question is, what are we going to leave in the "2010 FIFA World Cup" section and what do we put in the controversies section? Starship.paint (talk) 12:07, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
The thing is, it wasn't actually controversial in the real sense of the word. He committed a foul that denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, and was summarily sent off. There wasn't the sort of media hand-wringing and blindly partisan support from Liverpool that followed the Evra incident and the biting incident(s). The handball incident is fine where it is, and there's a reason we try to avoid creating sections devoted to criticisms or controversies. I'd say treat each incident separately, rather than have one big section about Luis is a naughty, naughty boy. --Mosmof (talk) 14:01, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
I agree. There's no need for a "Controversy" section when it can be incorporated into the rest of the article (and for the most part, already was). The "Style of Play" also has some duplication when it talks about the handball incident, which has little to do with his style of play. - Maximusveritas (talk) 19:12, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

International goals

Suarez has 40 not 41 goals! Yes, FIFA has for whatever reason credited Suarez with a goal against Peru in June 2012 when in fact it was Sebastian Coates. The RSSSF source that I provided in the page is also in the same boat. In fact, it states that Suarez himself says he didn't score the goal. Furthermore, FIFA is known to have botched their own match summaries. One of those match summaries is for the Bahrain 10-0 Indonesia WCQ. FIFA has messed up the some scorers and times of goals. Compare FIFA's match summary and the news report [1] for that game and you'll see. You can even see the highlights or the full game if it's available and see that FIFA's summary is messed up. Therefore, it would be no surprise for FIFA to mess up the goal scorer for that Uruguay-Peru WCQ where Suarez was credited with the goal. Other reports also have Coates as the scorer! I've already provided a source which says he didn't that goal which would leave his tally at 40 and not 41, so I don't know what the problem is. Mas y mas (talk) 10:11, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Bite Organization

Now that there have been 3 incidents, should they be grouped together in one section? Zilcho (talk) 20:05, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

I'd say give it a few hours or days until we see punishment for this recent bite. By then it should be substantial. I'm not sure how to do it - do we retain the bites in their original places as well, because removing them would spoil the chronology as his 2013 club season and 2014 world cup would end abruptly and unexplained. It's about consistency. Not all football players get the opportunity to get an unprecedented FIFA ban, possibly scupper their country's chances in a World Cup and even ruin their entire career, from just a careless "nibble in the box", as it were. Other players of "the beautiful game" might get jealous. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:27, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Suarez biting is not non-notable

The most recent Suarez biting incident in the World Cup series is indeed notable, and has been covered extensively in the media. To call this "stupid" or non-notable may be the opinion of a few, but it is definitely pertinent to an article about Suarez and is notable. If you could please document that either of these conditions is inaccurate, notability or pertinency, then you could certainly delete this section. Thanks, Scott P. (talk) 19:00, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

the last sentence of the "2014 FIFA Worl Cup" subsection states: >>Suárez's lawyer claimed that "we don't have any doubts that" there was a European-based campaign against Suárez.<< the second quotation mark seems to belong at the end of the sentence --92.193.12.240 (talk) 15:55, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

The quote from the source reads "We don't have any doubts that this has happened because it's Suarez and secondly because Italy was eliminated" so the quote cuts off at exactly the correct location. Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:18, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
well at any rate, "we dont have any doubt that", is a very weird thing to quote. since what followed is basically conjecture, i strongly recommend removing the "european-based campaign against suarez" with the actual rest of the quote or at the very least, rephrase the sentence to "suarez's lawyer claimed that they didnt have any doubts that..." - sounds much better this way. --92.193.12.240 (talk) 17:45, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
Not really. It's perfectly normal and acceptable practice in English. Walter Görlitz (talk) 01:38, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
I was the one who quoted that. The main part I wanted to quote was "we" actually. I don't have a problem with the full quote. Actually, the full quote also includes "There's a lot of pressure from England and Italy". So it might be too long. starship.paint "YES!" 05:43, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

Lead / Stats

Some issues: the lead says he's scored over 100 goals for Ajax, but the statistics only show 81. Also, I don't think Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten and Dennis Bergkamp are worth mention in the lead. starship.paint "YES!" 09:49, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

It counts his 81 league goals, not 111 overall. You may have a point with the list of other players clogging the lead, I would remove it if I had autocratic power over the article, but others would say that Ajax have such a rich history that it is necessary to illuminate Suarez by mentioning him with their other strike legends. '''tAD''' (talk) 01:06, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
Oh okay about the league goals. Still a bit misleading, perhaps I'll add "in all competitions". But there are a total of 17 players who have achieved >100 goals, not too few, and Suarez is only 13th. Also, the choice of players. Piet van Reenen isn't mentioned, and he's #1 and with the highest average. Perhaps a better statistic is that Suarez is only one of four players to score 40+ goals in a season, alongside Cruijff, Van Basten and Henk Groot. Proposing ... The following year, he was made the club captain, helping Ajax win the KNVB Cup while becoming the league's top scorer with 35 goals in 33 games. He was named Dutch Footballer of the Year and scored 49 goals in all competitions, becoming one of four Ajax players to ever score more than 40 goals in a season alongside Henk Groot, Marco van Basten and Johan Cruyff. High profile article, lede over detailed

Generally well written article that would benefit by move of some detail from lede to main body (including anything not appearing there with citation). It may be worth mentioning that he is "one of four Ajax players to ever score more than 40 goals in a season" but leave "Henk Groot, Marco van Basten and Johan Cruyff" for the main body where the citation appears. Same with compensation details, unless they set records or are otherwise noteworthy. Same with precision of dates and other figures—summarizing awards in a given year is plenty for the lede, because other details can appear in the main body—we do not need month and day! Finally, and in general, the more lettred (accomplished) an individual, the more careful one has to be to select the accolades one presents in a lede. Less is more. At the same time, the current lede is devoid of near anything of broader human interest, an area that could be expanded after a judicious trimming of the current material. Personal life section clarified after consulting cited sources

Article seems generally well written, but there was an error of reporting of fact that appeared in this paragraph (who it was that was being referred to with the "mi…" sobriquet), which led me to review some sentences and their sources. As a result, corrections of fact and tone were made to two sentences in this section. The section was also slightly reordered to make the flow smoother (e.g., reference to brother and fellow footballer moved up to where siblings are mentioned, and all Balbi material gathered in closing sentence).

In re: corrected error and tone:

In the closing sentence of the second paragraph of this section ("The contrast between his life in Europe and the poverty he left behind…"), I edited out the word "cause", because this is a strong term, behaviorally, and indeed I found that the source cited at no point uses or suggests the word; at best, Suarez' poverty is offered to rationalize, and so I edited this to say "contributing". Because the second half of the sentence is also speculative, and similarly modestly supported by the ESPN source, I softened this part of the sentence to read "possible explanation".

The third paragraph is more problematic; the statement that the grandmother used the "mi…" sobriquet about her husband is simply not in the citation, which states that it was used by the grandmother of Suarez himself (a factual error in the editor's representing the content of the source). The same source also does not end unequivocally; it states that the FA commission ruled Suarez's evidence/explanations for the ~2' altercation to be "unreliable" (hence the ban imposed). These factual missteps were corrected, and the tone made to match the cited source. This could perhaps be shortened, but it is now accurate to the source.

Bottom line, regardless of our opinions, the article needs to follow the facts and conclusions of the sources; sources are not to be used to create impressions in support of editor opinions. Cheers. Le Prof Leprof 7272 (talk) 03:31, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

Liverpool to Barcelona fee

Perhaps it is best to have a new section here to discuss the actual fee this transfer cost. Unconfirmed reports stated the original fee was £75m. However, Barcelona themselves have now confirmed it was £65m.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28852919 https://twitter.com/FCBarcelona/status/501674127808536577

I feel, given that the club themselves have publicly made clear the fee they paid, that it should be changed in the article. Panhead2014 (talk) 18:54, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Coming from someone with a vested interest means nothing. This deal is a re-run of the Gareth Bale transfer, Real Madrid stated one fee, the other club (in the case of English clubs via the press) state another. It's been worded as such to replicate that case. The BBC is only regurgitating the Spanish source in question, sources close to Liverpool state the buy out clause (75M) was met. I suspect we will never find out the exact fee. Carlos Rojas77 (talk) 23:11, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

What is the source that is close to Liverpool? It is not mentioned in the article. The only link provided in the article that mentions the £75m is the BBC one and even they don't confirm it, simply allude to a rumoured fee. Barcelona have now confirmed that the transfer fee was £65m. Why say otherwise? Panhead2014 (talk) 22:24, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
