"Published works and statements about the Holocaust" section

edit

This is wayyyy past WP:DUE, this takes up more space than relations with Israel or Hamas. This is not such a prominent feature of the coverage of Abbas that it needs this level of detail, nor does it need every random statement hes made in 70 years. nableezy - 17:41, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Considering it discusses at least 5 separate instances of him denying the Holocaust, I'd say that the repetitive behavior of his is notable enough for documentation in this article. If he wrote a book on it and republished it 30 years later, I'd think the topic is significant enough to include on the page. Do you have any ideas in particular on how you'd change the section? I did not say remove it, but it is certainly not covered more widely than his presidency of the PNA. nableezy - 13:41, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
His Holocaust denial/distortion/justification is widely covered by PLENTY of mainstream sources. It's not a minor feature nor some verbal slip he said once in his life. He even wrote a dissertation on the subject. You're more than welcome to expand other sections, though. Dovidroth (talk) 07:21, 8 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Coverage is an appropriate and proper reflection of what is covered in WP:RS. I would even go as far to say that the lede is even an underrepresentation of what is covered in the body of the article on this topic. Longhornsg (talk) 18:14, 8 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Bald assertion based on nothing but personal opinion. This biography for example mentions the Holocaust twice, in 218 pages. This covers it in 6 pages, out of 200 some pages. It is absurd to claim that this topic is more widely covered than his presidency, which is how this article treats it. Im going to be chopping a bunch of it down. nableezy - 13:41, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
The Holocaust denial/revisionism should be stated in the lead, not only in a section. Significant aspect here. Researcher (Hebrew: חוקרת) (talk) 13:13, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Sure, that has nothing to do with how much space is in the section though. nableezy - 13:41, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Gaping content gaps

edit

In contrast to the above, Abbas' actual political activities are quite underrepresented. There is barely anything on the 2014 unity government and split with Hamas (neither in the main career part, or the relations with Hamas part), despite this being the biggest political drama in the last decade. More broadly, I'm not sure if it benefits the article to divide the contents into these career/relations sections - the main effect appears to be to de-contextualize all of the relations aspects, which, as a result, are just organized in a disjointed prose line format in their section. The lack of sufficient quotes from the book about the Holocaust

edit

In my opinion, there are not enough quotes from his book to express his denial of the Holocaust. Here are some quotes. The following is a Google Translate from the Hebrew version. I apologize for the the irrelevant footnotes...

In the introduction to the book, he accused the Zionist movement of exaggerating the number of murdered people and the severity of the Holocaust. Among other things, he wrote (according to a translation and quotes provided by the Memari Institute).

In the Second World War forty million people of different nations were killed in the world. The German people sacrificed ten million people, the Soviet nations twenty million and the rest Yugoslavia, Poland and the other nations. However, after the war it became known that six million Jews were among the victims and that the war of extermination was directed first and foremost against the Jews and then against the other peoples of Europe.

As a matter of fact, no one can confirm this number or deny it completely. In other words, the number of Jewish victims could be six million and could be much smaller - even less than a million. Bringing up the discussion regarding the number of Jews in no way diminishes the seriousness of the crime committed against them, since murder - even of one person - is a crime that the civilized world cannot accept and humanity cannot recognize. ...

Zionism first spoke of twelve million who were exterminated in these concentration camps, then the number was greatly reduced and became half, that is, to only six million. Then the number was further reduced and became four million, because it cannot be that the Germans killed or destroyed more Jews than there were in the world during this period. In fact, the real number is much smaller than these false millions. Historian and author Raul Hilberg believes[52] that the number does not exceed 896,000.

Then the Zionist movement tried to describe how they were murdered in the concentration camps and gas chambers, ignoring two fundamental facts. First, a large part of the Jews remained alive ... Second, the elimination of the victims was not only carried out in the concentration camps and gas chambers. Some of the victims fell as a result of participating in wars and battles as well as due to the famine and diseases that affected all the peoples of Europe. In addition to this, the concentration camps were not only for Jews but included people from all over Europe including fighters, intellectuals, educated people, prisoners of war and opponents of fascism...

As for the gas chambers, which are said to be intended to murder Jews: in a scientific study published by the French professor Robert Pourison, he denies the existence of these chambers for the purpose of murdering people, and claims that they were intended only for cremation, for fear of the spread of diseases and infections in the area.
