The owner of the island is the Swedish Count Bernadotte - which nation holds sovreignty? Nik42 04:11, 13 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I am almost certain that it is Germany, because the island lies closest to the German coast of the lake. The nationality of the owner is irrelevant, just because a certain national purchase (or in this case, inherit) estate in another country, that does'nt make that estate a part of the national's home country. --Konstantin 15:21, 19 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

It's worth noting he was (dead now, it needs updating. However I believe it's still his estate) a former Swedish prince. He lost his priviliges due to marrying a commoner. The count title is actually from Luxembourg. In any case, yes: The island is German from what I've heard. --BluePlatypus 21:08, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Definately in Germany. You can get to it by bus or by boat from Konstanz (Constance). The island and gardens are a popular tourist attraction.

What you don't mention is that it is connected to the mainland by bridge. See http://www.mainau.de/htdocs/en/0211.htm Cars are not allowed on the island, except for those used by registered disabled. If you come by car you have to park on the mainland and walk across the bridge. In summer 2006 the level of the lake sunk so much that it was possible for a few days to walk to the island.
