Sourcing
editShould probably stay, given initial confusion over the origin of the name. The two websites currently given aren't really solid WP:RS but are decent enough placeholders pending a more authoritative text. — LlywelynII 02:00, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
Merge from Majorana
editMajorana is just a stub, the whole article is only a list of three notable individuals. The discussion of what is undoubtedly the same name with a spelling variant is found here at Maiorana. The should be listed together here. JesseRafe (talk) 15:57, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
- Setting aside the merits of the proposal, I think it is Majorana (surname) that you wish to merge, and not the disambiguation page, Majorana
- Thank you, fixed. JesseRafe (talk) 16:14, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
Listing of name
editI have concerns about including Daniel Maiorana. English Wikipedia has only three pages currently naming him. One is Hall Prison, which relates that Maiorana escaped prison, the only citation being a news story, not about the excape, but about a prison employee being dismissed for having known about the escape plans but not informing superiors. As such, the mentions of Maiorana are limited to the fact that he and his peers escaped and were recaptured days later, but no further detils about him. Second is our page on Fucked For Life, where his role in gang is entirely unreferenced, and neither the Swedish nor Norse pages on the same gang name him at all (though all are basically stubs). Finally, we have this page, which gives an unsourced birth year - since he is presumed to be a living person, I am going to delete this. I am not entirely comfortable giving him prominant mention on this page if that is all the information that we have on him. Agricolae (talk) 17:39, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
Origins and variants
editAn editor has asked me to delete two of the citations as unreliable. For obvious reasons, I am not going to do so. Narky Blert (talk) 23:15, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
- I don't even have to look into your Talk page to guess it was Theo something? I haven't been able to get through to him and to convince him to do things himself. He's not blocked and this page isn't protected to any degree. I don't get it. JesseRafe (talk) 03:38, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
- The User in question already tried removing the information themself, but it was reverted. I also was requested to come here and highlight French origins, in place of Italian. @Theo Mandela: it is bad form to troll other users looking for someone to make the changes you want. Either edit the page yourself or suggest a change on this Talk page, with your rationale. Agricolae (talk) 04:30, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
2019 merge proposal
edit- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- no consensus to merge. – wbm1058 (talk) 19:25, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
I note that User:Theo Mandela has proposed a 4-way merge crossing a mixed set of disambiguation pages, some of which relate to surnames only, others which don't. The proposal involves Rigano, Majorana, Maiorana and Maiorano; while these share a similar etymology, their current meaning isn't sufficiently close to warrant a 4-way merge; just link them better through the See also section. In more detail:
- Rigano: should certainly be kept separate from the others
- Majorana: should be kept separate, because the subset of surnames, Majorana (surname), already directs to Maiorana.
- Maiorano: worth keeping separate too, noting that Maiorano (surname) already redirects to the surname page Maiorana.
So, overall, the current structure looks good to me. Therefore oppose. Klbrain (talk) 06:51, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- I note that Theo has also mentioned this set at User talk:Macrakis#Name articles. However, the merge proposal should be discussed on this article talk page, rather than that of another user. Klbrain (talk) 07:05, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- I am procedurally removing the tags from the two disambiguation pages as noted by Klbrain. Disambiguation pages can't be merged with name list articles. -- JHunterJ (talk) 13:54, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. I agree with Klbrain. Maiorano (surname) and Majorana (surname) already redirect to the target article; Maiorano and Majorana are DAB pages, and must not be merged into a name article; not least because references and excessive descriptive material on DAB pages are forbidden by MOS:DAB. Rigano is a completely different name; cross-references are justified because of the related through separate etymologies (from marjoram and oregano), but certainly not a merge. Narky Blert (talk) 06:49, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
If the names are all related (there's no direct evidence given on any of the pages) then why should the Maiorana spelling be the main article?
The page is poorly presented altogether in my opinion for people who come across it. The notables section especially with those date templates. Most of the information is just trivia really, not worth mentioning and a bit much when compared to most other name list articles (most don't need sources). One ref just goes to the home page for the Italian white pages site. Theo Mandela (talk) 22:37, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose An article for the surname, and list of person of the "same" surnames are different items. Yes, the dictionary by Emidio De Felice had grouped the related surnames together, which we can just wrote one article for the surname, but it is different from merging the list. Maiorano
editIt says here Maiorano is possibly a spelling variation of Maiorana but then says its more likely a seperate name, am I wrong in thinking it shouldn't redirect here? I think Stefano Maiorano's inclusion here could be moved to Maiorano. 2A02:C7F:3846:4500:8B8:C4E1:FE40:9A64 (talk) 09:45, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
Maiorana, Majorana and Maiorano
editIn accordance with WP:DAB and WP:Name pages, is there a reason people with the names Majorana and Maiorano respectively are listed here instead of at the pages for those names? Ferraris, Ferraras and Ferraros, for example, are all listed seperately. I feel having them all listed here is unusual and cluttered. On a side note, the yellow pages source cited here is not a WP:RS. 18:51, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
Hi, here from Wikipedia:Third opinion. I have read the discussion at User talk:Narky Blert#Name pages but it would be useful if the two main opinions are summarized here. Mostly, I d like the IP to identify the problem and suggest a solution.(not watching, please {{ping}}
