Language

edit

Is the film really in Palawa kani as the article currently says? This reference says the Aboriginal language used was that of the lead actress Mawuyul Yanthalawuy, which is presumably Yolngu Matha:

"With the choice of Mawayul the dilemma about the Aboriginal language was resolved. We decided to have Mawayul translate her dialogue from Ken’s screenplay into her own language. This would be done scene-by-scene as we shot the movie, without a word being written down, and the tribe members would similarly improvise their dialogue. A translator would be present in the tribal scenes to make sure no unauthorised lines from exuberant young men found their way onto the screen. However, when the movie premiered in Darwin, at one point there was unexplained mirth from the Aboriginal members of the audience. I still don’t know exactly what slipped through the net." [1]

I watched a bit of the film on SBS On Demand. The language in the tribal scenes is clearly improvised with everyone often talking over the top of one another, and all the actors seem to have Yolngu names (or at least from Top End). That's a little bit original research, but there is no reference for the language in the film being Palawa kani either. So, to be conservative, I'll edit so it just says English, given I can't find a reference that names the specific Aboriginal language used.Boneymau (talk) 01:16, 16 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
