Something about various visual depictions?
Would this be an appropriate topic in the article? Like Baby Mario, Mario Sunshine with the shades and stuff, etc.RadioYeti
- Yes, I think that would be a good idea. However, it should only be a subsection, not an actual section. (It's just a detail, not a whole concept) Perhaps we could also point out in which games they appeared. ~Amina
Page name
Why can't this entry simply live at Mario? As it is that page redirects here and I can't think of anything else that is only known as "Mario". --mav
We should add in the release dates and systems for the individual games. --LGagnon
If you want to be technically correct, his full name is Mario Mario. Luigi's full name is Luigi Mario. They are the "Mario" brothers. →Raul654 02:40, Feb 22, 2004 (UTC)
They need to put more info on Mario, instead of his games!
Wasn't their name Mario and Luigi Fontanelli? 200.45.106.102 23:50, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Mario Segali
It says that Mario Segali was the warehouse manager. I always thought he was their landlord, though. I don't want to add false information to the article, though. Am I right?
- A lot of early gaming history is clouded in such confusion. It might well be that someone from Nintendo said one thing, and someone else said another. Or maybe he was the landlord of the warehouse? ;) ~ FriedMilk 14:06, 16 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- Landlord of their Seattle warehouse, actually. Backed up by other sites and the book Game Over. Fix going in, now. Krupo 02:20, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Mario Mario
Will people stop changing Mario's name? His full title is Mario Mario, not just 'Mario'. -- Kwekubo 21:10, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- He's known as Mario or Super Mario and nothing else. Putting "Mario Mario" there would be confusing. His full name being "Mario Mario" is anecdotal. It might be a good idea to spell out the full names for real people, but "Mario Mario" isn't used by anybody, not even a birth record. Fredrik 21:22, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- By the way, it has only been used in the movie. Some people would probably not consider secondary products to bear more weight than the average fan fiction. I personally don't. Fredrik 21:27, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- As far as I know, the name "Mario Mario" has never been used in any of the games, which are Mario's main medium. "Mario Mario" seems to be given as much attention from Nintendo as the movie premise that Koopas are humanoids who evolved from dinosaurs... ~ FriedMilk 12:24, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- His full name has been referred to as Mario Mario on more than one occasion by Nintendo Official Magazine UK. I think most sources would recognise it as a valid bit of Mario trivia, so it merits inclusion. -- Kwekubo 23:29, 15 May 2004 (UTC)
- Well, if there's no reaction by this stage, I guess it's safe to reinsert. -- Kwekubo 23:48, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Quite frankly, I think that their should be a page for all Mario characters - the good (Mario, Luigi, Toad, etc.), the bad (Bowser, Wart, Kamek, etc.) and the mindless (goombas, troopas, prana palnts, etc.). And, also, the names Mario Mario and Luigi Mario have been confermed by the guy who created Mario (his name, I dont know!).
Both this article and the Luigi article have stated that Miyamoto has said that the brothers' last name (assuming they have one) is Mario. Is there any evidence of this? The movie and animated series carry no weight on this (especially since they were American-made), so is there any proof? -- J44xm 21:48, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
Mario's ancestry
Mario is an Italian-American man, born in the Mushroom Kingdom, and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States.
Okay, I know that that Yoshi's Island game says that he was born in the Mushroom Kingdom, but which game says that he's Italian American or where he was raised?
Actually, he's an Italian-American man, raised in the Mushroom Kingdom, and born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States. That was confermed by Nintendo. And, by the way, the games give you millions of different stories because there is no continuing storyline bridging each Mario game.
- That's just absurd. How could they have been born in Brooklyn and raised in Mushroom Kingdom? The Stork thing is, like, that the baby isn't really born until it is delivered. Luigi is kidnapped, and Mario lands on Yoshi's Island, and upon saving Luigi and the Stork, the three of them are brought to their parents in the Mushroom Kingdom. And how would they have been raised in the Mushroom Kingdom? He got there as a middle-aged man. The most plausible idea is that they were born in the Mushroom Kingdom, they grew up in Brooklyn, and then returned to the Mushroom Kingdom. -- A Link to the Past 06:44, July 15, 2005 (UTC)
- is it possible he was 'ordered' for a brooklonian family but redirected or misdelivered? was he raised by mushrooms? is peach the only native human to the kingdom? or is that a fallacy? it seems that the king is a mushroom, and peach is most certainly not. perhaps like mallow, she too is under a crazy false pretense? or can human babies be raised in the mushroom kingdom by mushrooms for reasons yet unknown? and baby mario, is that like a retconning or a seperate continuity?
- What in the world? Mario and Luigi were born and raised in the Kingdom. Any Brooklyn ancestry has never been part of anything canonical. -- J44xm 00:21, August 20, 2005 (UTC)
Ahem, let me set this straight! Nintendo says (I can't find where, though) that Mario Mario was born and raised in Brooklyn, and while messing around one day Mario found a secret warp pipe to the Mushroom Kingdom!--VenomousNinja 02:47, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
Games missing from the list
There are almost all games featuring Mario in the list, but what about the Gameboy games "Mario & Yoshi" (kind of Tetris) and "Tennis" (Mario is also the referee in the GB-version) ?

Alright, but I don't know exactly when they were released. "Mario Paint"(SNES) is also missing, but I'm sure it was released within the 90s. The "Game and watch Gallery"-Games for Gameboy also feature Mario.

The Mario Segali story
What is the source for this? I've been able to find very little about it on the web. Unless it can be attributed to a reliable source, it should be removed. Fredrik 23:35, 14 May 2004 (UTC)
- Check out the book "Game over: How Nintendo Zapped an American Industry, Captured Your Dollars, & Enslaved Your Children." It has the Mario Segali story as well as a lot of useful Nintendo information.
- This suggestion as to Mario's name is particularly widely referenced. I have seen it in Nintendo publictions, and an internet search reveals this IGN article as an example. -- Kwekubo 23:48, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
This is true. Even on the official European Nintendo Sites (the link leads to the English one) the name is explained this way. --Luigi 09:11, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- See Nintendoland.
Better games overview
I think we could improve this article by moving the full list of games to a List of Mario games and mentioning only the most important ones here. We could then have a fairly lengthy description (1-2 paragraphs) about each game mentioned here, including how it furthered gaming. The list of games here could be split into the main series of platform games (SMB1-3, SMW, Yoshi's Island, SM64, Sunshine), and some of the more important spin-off type games (Super Mario Kart, etc).
Thoughts? Fredrik (talk) 14:55, 5 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I think the list should include only those games released on Nintendo consoles and arcade, but not the unimportant and probably unlicensed computer-versions of Mario Bros.
--Luigi 20:01, 5 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- I second this. A good "important" list would probably also only include games where Mario is either a playable character or the gameplay revolves around him. Donkey Kong, all of the Super Mario Brothers/Land/World games, Mario 64, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, maybe Mario 128 [1], etc. - Plutor 16:45, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Er, you guys all seemed to second this "movement" so I did it anyway. Those who didn't agree (in a teeny-tiny voice) please don't hurt me. --Wack'd About Wiki 09:18, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

Clarifications for a great article
"According to some American manuals and gameplay, Mario and his brother are Italian-Americans born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City."
First, what American manuals say this? Second, "City" should be removed. (Whoops!)
- Well I belive this is safe to remove... the manuals for SMB1-3 do not mention this... the only other manuals to check are the arcade manual (if there is one), and any Donkey Kong manual...
I think I'd rewrite this some: "The game known in America as 'Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island,' in which the Yoshi clan deliver Mario and Luigi to their parents after the stork was unable to, makes clear that Mario and Luigi's home since birth (as it were) is the Mushroom Kingdom. They speak with Italian accents, but there has never been any canonical material that indicated that they actually are Italian. Some unofficial sources -- mainly the various animated series and the non-animated 1993 film (see below) -- claim that the brothers have lived in and were possibly reared in Brooklyn, New York. Nothing canonical has ever confirmed this, however."
"He is said to be a plumber (though he has held several other blue-collar jobs in his lifetime) and wears a red shirt, cap, and blue overalls." It might be nice to mention the other colors he's worn, from the brown and red in the original SMB, to the red overalls and blue shirt in the cartoons.
Can we get a better picture of Mario?
What games have had multiple endings?
It's not called a "Power mushroom": it's the "Super Mushroom," which usually makes him larger, but has served many other purposes, too. It often represents a boost in power or speed or somesuch. Should we at least mention the Fire Flower and Starman (which in recent years has also been known as the Super Star, I believe). More information about Japanese differences and info might be cool.
Also, yes, the person who does the voice of Mario and Luigi (and others!) should be mentioned. Great article we've got here. I signed up for a Wikipedia account solely for this article.
- Can we get a better picture of Mario?
- We used to have a CGI image from Super Mario 64's promotional materials, but it got a copyright notice. We can use screenshots under fair use, so if you can take a shot of him while playing one of the later, more graphically detailed games, be our guest. I think this one is rather good, myself. ~ FriedMilk 03:28, 2004 Sep 2 (UTC)
Mario Mario
The thing is, the Super Mario Bros. Movie couldn't have come up with the title, unless Dr. Mario didn't have his last name as Mario, because Dr. Mario came out in 1990.
- I think the Dr. was added nonwithstanding the last name. See also Dr. Wario in Wario Ware. Andre (talk) 22:51, Dec 13, 2004 (UTC)
Well, two things are that:
- A. Dr. Wario is merely a spoof
- And B. I gave the benefit of the doubt that Dr. Mario is just to have similarity to the Mario franchise as much as I give the benefit of the doubt that Dr. Mario came up with the idea that his last name is Mario, and giving the doubt that SMB Movie gave the last name. Of course, I hate the SMB movie. *Shrugs* - A Link to the Past
Mario Mario and Luigi Mario have been confermed to be the Mario Bros. fulll names by Shigeru Miyamoto, the guy who created Mario and all the games Mario & friends were ever in. --Wack'd About Wiki 09:32, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
- P.S.: "Doctor" is the only title in which it is okay if your first name fallows instead of your last.
- Example: Both "Dr. Adam" and "Dr. West" would be appropreate to call a doctor named Adam West.
- P.S.S.: I know, Adam West is from The Fairly OddParents, but it was the first name that came to mind (I saw "Catman Meets the Crimson Chin" recently)!
- Adam West is the actor who played Batman in the 1960s movie, and he is also the mayor on Family Guy. He does a lot of voice work these days. Andre (talk) 20:19, July 15, 2005 (UTC)
- Since it's so disputed, we need some evidence to back up Wack'd About Wiki's assertion that Miyamoto himself has said this. -- J44xm 01:32, July 16, 2005 (UTC)
I came across 1 Vs 3 Minigame Tree and wanted to mention it here so it might get the attention of someone who knows the subject. Is there an appropriate place to merge this information, or at least somewhere we could link to it? As it stands now, the article is an orphan. SWAdair | Talk 06:40, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Mario's 3D debut
- ...made him the very first 2D established video game character to appear in a full 3D game.
Duke Nukem 3D was also released in 1996 but I don't know if that was before Mario 64 came out. Some websites suggests it was available in January.R4p70r 02:42, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Duke Nukem 3D was released around Super Bowl Sunday 1996, but he was a computer game character. Also, it wasn't a full 3D game - All the characters were still 2D sprites. "full 3D game" was a carefully chosen phrase there, I think. --Golbez 02:47, Apr 1, 2005 (UTC)
Mascot change?
While Mario had been the official mascot of Nintendo for many years, Hiroshi Yamauchi replaced with with Pikachu during late 1997.
I've removed this from the article pending proof of the statement's validity. -Luigi2 21:01, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)

Sections
The current sections are:
- Biography
- Character development
- The Super Mario games
- Other appearances
- See also
- External links
For the improvement drive, I think we should start by creating some new sections that make some more sense. Some ideas:
- Appearance
- Abilities and techniques
- Companions and allies
- Opponents
I'm sure there are lots more. Let's create some consensus here before we start randomly editing the article. Jacoplane 23:37, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
- These new sections sound like they'd work. I'd squeeze 'em in between Biography and Character development, myself. Maybe a small section detailing his creation, if one doesn't already exist. --Shadow Hog 02:35, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

Way too much information about mario's clothes
Right now, there is way too much information in this article about Mario's clothes and how they have changed over the years. Not only is there an entire section devoted to this, but then we revisit the topic again in the Character development section. This minutia is tedious and unencyclopedic. Could someone please consolidate all of it into something more concise? Thanks! Kaldari 19:37, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
- Aye, I have recognized this as a potential problem. I'm intending on merging this part of Character development and appearance together, eventually. That's probably the best way to handle it. --Shadow Hog 21:16, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
Mario's powers & Paper Mario
I noticed there where no mention on the "powers" Mario have in the Paper Mario "RPG" game. I've only watched a friend play the game a bit so I don't know enough to feel comfortable about adding it myself, but I seem to recall "powers" like turning into a paper plane, rolling up into a cylinder to roll under obsatcles and stuff like that. Shouldn't that also be mentioned in the section descriping the powers Mario gets from the various powerups and suits in the various games? --Sherool 17:05, 22 July 2005 (UTC)
Donkey Kong
There are many, many links to Donkey Kong over the course of the article, most of which refer to the game, Donkey Kong (arcade game) while they POINT to the character, Donkey Kong. Jumpman did not first appear in the character, but the game. This should be fixed? Fantusta 17:27, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Wario - Improvement Drive
I've nominated Wario for the improvement drive. You can vote for him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:This_week%27s_improvement_drive#Wario_.28August_2.29 While he may not seem like one who can be too much improved, he has a lot of plot, probably just as much as Mario does. Thanks. -- A Link to the Past 00:49, July 27, 2005 (UTC)
The name itself
Why isn't this article about the common first name Mario or simply a disambig page? Another bias towards video games? There are a lot of Marios, and even if this one is probably the most famous (to younger readers) it seems strange that it would be more important than an article about the name similar to William (name) or Stephen.
Peter Isotalo 13:01, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- No this is not "bias twoards video games", it's because Mario (the character) is the person, place, subject, or thing that is best known as simply Mario. Same reason why Bach redirects to Johann Sebastian Bach and then offers a link to a disambiguation page with over a dozen other Bach's on it. In the same fashion, this article offers a disambiguation link too - see Mario (disambiguation). K1Bond007 16:32, August 4, 2005 (UTC)
- Bach is a no-brainer because his sons, relatives and namesakes are all but forgotten compared to how famous papa Bach is today. To me Mario would only seem a clear-cut case if we assume the position of those born after 1980 or so (and not include me). And despite the fact that there is a disambiguation page, the article on the common first name is nowhere to be found. Has anyone actually considered it might be more appropriate to have the first-name article here or to simply make this article the disambig?
- To me it would seem more logical to keep this article under Super Mario or something like it. I also wouldn't be brandishing the video game bias unless I had experience of it. Along with Star Trek and WW II it's probably one of the most over-represented topics there is on Wikipedia.
- Peter Isotalo 10:39, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
- As for as I'm concerned, this should be Mario (Nintendo). Unless you want to say that Bowser (making him King Bowser instead, for accuracy) is so much more notable than any other Bowser. -- A Link to the Past 02:57, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
- Theres a huge difference between Bowser and Mario. Mario is the most popular video game character of all time, hands down - whether you like him or not. He's as recognizable as just about any popular Disney character. Theres no other Mario in that list that even comes close to being recognized as only Mario. In my opinion, it would be pretty nonsensical to move him (yet again). The template {{otheruses}} is used at the top of the page for anyone seeking someone else by the name of Mario. K1Bond007 03:09, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
- Agreed. Bowser isn't much more notable than, say, the dog's name Bowser, but Mario is far more notable than all the other Marios who might be referred to by first name only, though the rapper/singer has some popularity at the moment, but that is presumably more ephemeral than that of Mario the character. Andre (talk) 05:18, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
- I would argue that Mario is a huge, global, icon and that other Marios should be mentioned at the top, with a link to a disambiguation page. If this were almost any other game character, then it should be a disambiguation.
- I definitely think that "Mario" should be a disambiguation, and this article should be moved to Mario (Nintendo). --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 19:03, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
- I definitely think it should stay. --Golbez 19:25, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
- All the other Mario people have the benefit of last names. People who want to know about Mario Batali or Mario Lopez or Mario Andretti most likely will not simply type in "Mario" and be disappointed that it doesn't redirect to their desired location. If your argument is about Video Game bias, there are better examples or articles to bring up. Mario has just become part of modern pop culture, and most likely will be for a long time.
- I definitely think it should stay. --Golbez 19:25, August 17, 2005 (UTC)

Baby Mario
While I can see the need for this section to exist (and my guess is that it was merged into this article from its own stub, since it contained an introduction line (which I've removed now) that sounded like it should have been at the top of its own article) I think that its current position is odd within the article right now. I mean, putting it after "Abilities"? Perhaps it would go better somewhat closer to the biography section, perhaps even merged in there as a subsection of biography? It'd require a little rewording, but I think it'd fit better. Any thoughts? Fieari 19:38, August 25, 2005 (UTC)

I swear I remember at the ending of Yoshi's Island that Baby Mario and Baby Luigi (Mushroom Kingdom natives) were dropped off on the doorstep of a couple in Brooklyn... did this happen, and if so, shouldn't this be acknowledged? - Kevingarcia 06:15, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
- The house was a small mushroom house in a small unnamed village of mushroom houses. The Video Game Museum has screenshots. Agent CH 16:54, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
image captions
Hi there.... me again:). The image captions really should be more towards WP:CAPTION :) - for example "Mario can ride Yoshi in Super Mario World." should be something like "Mario riding Yoshi in Super Mario World. Yoshi is a common theme among mario games and in some such as Super Mario World, Mario can ride Yoshi. In other games yoshi appears as the main character" or something similar. - I don't think that is prudent in this case. Since the image is placed within the section describing Mario's abilities, the phrase "Mario can ride..." instead of "Mario riding" emphasises that this is an ability. Jacoplane 00:27, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
Reorganizing image layout
I've been playing around with the layout of images on this page, see the history for details. I felt the old layout was a bit random in terms of placement. Images overlapping section borders are generally not a good idea. But, if anyone feels otherwise, please say so... the changes I've made are very subjective, and we should have consensus on how we feel this page should look. Jacoplane 00:38, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
metal
can you put more about metal mario?
- What did you have in mind? (Note: you can sign your messages here by putting four tildas (~~~~) after your post) Fieari 20:39, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- The only things worth mentioning are that Metal Mario is a boss for Wario in Dr. Mario 64, and that he's in SSBM's Adventure. - A Link to the Past (talk) 21:40, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
stages, levels, another wiki entry
This game features the stage-level concept. Does anyone know where this started ? We could add the stage-level concept to wikipedia. Other games like Shinobi and Wonderboy feature it. And hundreds more afterwards. Anyone wants to help out making a wiki page about the stage-level concept ? mail angelo88@gmail.com.
Most recent edit
The most recent edit has something about a building manager, rent, etc. Is this sourced? Can anyone confirm this? Kertrats | Talk 00:29, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
- The Mushroom Kingdom's History of Mario has a similar, but not as detailed story. Does that help any? Agent CH 02:56, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
- Alright, it's probably accurate, then; I just didnt want complete nonsense added in without any proof. Kertrats | Talk 03:38, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
- The story on the classicgaming.com site is accurate, no doubt based on "Game Over", the book referenced earlier on this page. 142.221.110.4 01:31, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Powblocks merge
I don't think that powblocks should be merged with this article...-VenomousNinja 04:14, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- If it were to be merged, it should be merged with one of the games, not Mario the character. -- VederJuda 04:15, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- I see there's a List of Mario characters, enemies and items article. It could go there. Agent CH 04:59, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
Dr. Mario
Since we're including a subprofile for Baby Mario on Mario's page, should we also include on on Dr. Mario? Nintendo seems to treat the two as seperate characters -- at least as much so as Mario and Baby Mario -- and there's not much on Dr. Mario the character on the page for the game. Your thoughts?
