Could we move to "May'n"?

edit

Dear contributors,

I'm wondering if we could move "May Nakabayashi" to "May'n". (Of course, "May Nakabayashi" would become a redirection to "May'n" in that case.) My reasons are the following:

  • May'n is mostly known as "May'n" at least in Japan nowadays.
  • She is credited as "May'n" or "Sheryl Nome starring May'n" on CDs and DVDs. No "May Nakabayashi" is mentioned at all these days.
  • She calls herself "May'n" these days. For example, she often says "I'm May'n! (May'n desu!)" on stage. She almost never mentions "May Nakabayashi".

Therefore, I think it's beneficial to most people to title the main page as "May'n" (pun intended :-).

Is it Okay for me to move the page? What do you think?

(In the following, I try to sign by using four tildes. But, I'm not sure how that's converted to my name. So, just in case, my username is Ryofurue.)

  • Oppose for now. I have two concerns. One, reliable sources should indicate that May'n is the prevailing name. Two, that the change will not necessitate disambiguation. – Allen4names 19:21, 1 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Thank you for your response! I was really wondering whether anybody is reading this discussion.
  1. Could you elaborate on "necessitate disambiguation"? Presently, there is no entry titled "May'n". Therefore, there won't be any disambiguation, whether the main entry is "May'n" or "May Nakabayashi". . . . Or am I missing something? I'm quite new to Wikipedia and so please be gentle on me :-)

I'm not quite sure, actually, what is wrong with disambiguation . . . After all, the Beatles has to be disambiguated.

  2. What kind of sources do you think we need to indicate that that "May'n" is the prevailing name? For example, CDs and DVDs released after May'n's involvement in Macross Frontier (2008) mention "May'n" but absolutely no "May Nakabayashi"; her theme songs for games and movies credit "May'n" not "May Nakabayashi"; her official website (managed by her agency) talks exclusively about "May'n" and her official blog (managed by herself), too; when concerts include her performances, "May'n" is invariably announced in official publicity these three years; in interviews and news articles, "May'n" is prevalent; sample blog postings by fans and you'll find 80--90% of them (my very inaccurate estimate) include only "May'n" or "Bucho" but not "May Nakabayashi"; . . . . or what other information?

In fact, evidence is overwhelming (i) that "May'n" is the prevalent name and (ii) that May'n and her agency want fans to know her by that name. Since this is an encyclopedia, we may not need to heed point (ii), but we should also honor their policy if doing so doesn't do harm.

But you say we need sources. What kind of information counts as source?

By the way, thank you for your help in Wikipedia formatting and other stuff! I greatly appreciate it; I'm trying to learn from your edits.

I found two sources (see above) that support the move but I am still concerned about inadequate precision leading to the need to disambiguate. That said I no longer oppose the move. P.S. You may want to read Help:Wiki markup. – Allen4names 17:03, 2 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that the picture of May'n and Nakajima Megumi are wrong, or should I say the other way around so I've changed them around, but I can't change the file names, so it's just a little switch between the 2 links — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.255.1.171 (talk) 08:41, 17 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.

I shall be doing a review of this article today. The article looks good, and I don't believe it will need very many changes to get to GA (if any at all). It may take a bit for me to do the full review, however, so I'm just claiming the review before going all the way into. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 09:13, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

All issues I had have been fixed. The article currently passes in accordance to the GA criteria. give me a second as I go through the steps. Congratulations, Naruto! ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 10:54, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Issues that need to be fixed

edit

These issues need to be fixed before I am willing to pass this article:

  • "She had also become interested in music at an early age, and dreamt of becoming a singer" does not seem to be confirmed by the source given.
  • "... and has since become a regular performer at the annual event." does not seem to be confirmed by the source given. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 10:22, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Maplestrip: I've fixed both of these issues: for the first, I've rephrased it to instead say that she'd been singing since she was three, based on the sources. For the second, I simply removed it. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 10:48, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Other comments

edit

Here's a list of other, particularly minor comments I have. None of these in particular keep the article from passing, but they may be considered improvements regardless:

  • The second sentence in the lead section uses the word "after" twice. "After aspiring to become a musician ... she made her music debut in 2003 ... after auditioning."
  • The next sentence says she made her music debut in 2005 under a different label. Can a person have two music debuts? Maybe you mean "signed music debut" or something along those lines?
  • The author names of the two Anime News Network interviews (source #2 and #3) could be added to the respective references.
  • It may make more sense to put her early interest in singing before her early interest in anime in the Childhood section, as her fondness for music may have predated her fondness for anime.
  • "Music debut" comes up again in the first line of "Career".
  • You refer to "that same year" twice in the second section of "Career".
  • Much of the career section – the paragraph starting with "In January 2009" in particular – is quite a slog to read through, which I suppose is inevitable. I don't think there's really anything you can do about it.
  • Her second solo Budokan concert can probably be trimmed out, seeing as it is only sourced through a primary source. It can go either way, though.
  • I would remove the mention of Kanno in the first paragraph of the "Influences" section, as you go into depth about their relationship and her influence just after that.
  • ... she had a desire to "become" the character, although Kanno would give her advice that she should stop acting too much like Sheryl and instead be herself." is a bit of an odd and possibly meaningless quote. It may be good to try to be a bit more concrete about what kind of impact Kanno had on May'n, rather than including an airy "she told me to be myself" quote.
  • I do not know why the 2012 Anime News Network interview is specifically included in the Further reading, and would suggest removing it from there.
  • The The-O Network interview should either be implemented as a source or be moved to the talk page, as it does not belong in the external links list. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 10:22, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Maplestrip: Done rephrasing most of them. As for the Kanno mention, Kanno was really important to her music career so I'd rather keep that mention. As for the quote, I admit I had a hard time wording that, but the reason why it's worded that way is because that's all that was mentioned in the article used as a source. As for the further reading part, it had been added there by another editor (long before I started working on the article) and I never bothered to remove it.
