Neurosyphilis
editAnother editor has added information regarding Patrick Gibbs' article in the Telegraph: "mental illness caused by syphilis was the contributing factor in the deaths".
Rereading Gibbs, I can see he says this towards the end of his article: "suicide was a very likely conclusion... Reasons are many and various - he was in debt to the extent of 300,000 florins, he was probably suffering from syphilis, he may even have inherited a touch of madness through his mother whose uncle was Mad King Ludwig of Bavaria. What seems certain is that he didn't die for love, as the film would have us believe..."
I don't think Gibbs makes a statement about the reason for the deaths as baldly as the article now says, and I think it might need to be reworded. Per$1$tenceofv1$1on (talk) 19:42, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
