Talk:Memoirs of a Geisha (film)

Plot

edit

The plot contains numerous misuses of apostrophes, and is extended beyond its relevant criteria.--Nimnom (talk) 13:43, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

You should really consider using the proper Japanese form, family name first, when the name is first introduced and in the cast list. It's Sakamoto Chiyo and Nitta Sayuri. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.110.37.235 (talk) 21:44, 30 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Summary

edit

Someone should write a plot summary. I'd do it myself but I haven't seen it.--72.141.122.168 14:04, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Removed the plot notice. It pushed the whole plot section downward and created a ridiculous large blank space. C Ronald 11:26, 1 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

You can't remove the tag simply because it doesn't sit well! How can the article become better if people are only concerned with aesthetics rather than improving the article?
Seraphim Whipp 12:06, 1 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Why have you removed the whole section,it looks terrible, did you have full permission or concensus?, can you please return it to normal,s it may cause concern for readers of the article. Wongdai

No whole sections have been removed at all. Not unless there's been some sort of vandalism that I have missed. Wikipedia is not about providing long and overly complex plot summaries.
Seraphim Whipp 21:27, 8 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not only is the plot summary section way too long, but the "difference in the novel" section needs to be trimmed down as well. If there are no objections, I'll see what I can do about that.Daviticus82 16:12, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

About ¾ of the section devoted to "Plot" is actually commentary. It's badly in need of a rewrite. MovieMadness (talk) 18:36, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism

edit

Whoever removed the DVD cover from this article has vandalized this page, and people must stop vandalizing pages. --PJ Pete

This page has been vandalized again - the repeated references to a General who fought and died at Iwo Jima are incorrect. The character is The Chairman, and survives the movie. There may be other detail issues. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.59.119.180 (talk) 15:44, August 25, 2007 (UTC)

I added the name of the Yasukuni Shrine controversy page. I think it's important to understanding why the Chinese were unhappy. Evangeline (talk) 19:44, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Put on Hold

edit

If it was banned in China, to put the release on hold actually means to just cancel it from there. --PJ Pete

Ambiguous sentence

edit

What does

Child actress, Zoe Weizenbaum played the youth age of Pumpkin who was elected for prostitution, which is against the rules of a child actor.

mean exactly?

Sandra Oh

edit

The Sandra Oh quote doesn't really fit into the narrative. It mentions controversy about the casting choices, then says "Sandra Oh advocates inter-Asian casting" and explains that. Sandra Oh's opinions are pretty irrelevant unless she directly mentions Memoirs of a Geisha, and she doesn't, at least not in what's quoted here. Brutannica 06:34, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's just supposed to be part of the wider context and the effect on asian actresses from creating the film...I didn't add it; that's what I took from it being there.

Fair use rationale for Image:Memoirs of a Geisha Poster.jpg

edit

Image:Memoirs of a Geisha Poster.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Visual aspects of the film - Western vs Japanese ideas of beauty

edit

Liza Dalby (the American who became a geisha) was a consultant on this film and her book East wind melts the ice talks about the production of the film, saying that predominantly western ideals of beauty (painting the whole lips with red for incstance) dominated against Japanese ideals. Is there room in the article for something like this? Katana Geldar 10:25, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

OST

edit

Should the OST be included in this article? Yaminator (talk) 14:22, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes --RisingSunWiki 21:53, 26 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Got the basic information in. If anyone feels like filling out the infobox more or working on the track listing, go for it. Yaminator (talk) 01:52, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Chinese Surnames

edit

On several occasions Gong Li is referred to as Li instead of Gong. The surname is Gong, not Li. In the context I noticed these errors, most were within quotes. In this case, if the quote was copied correctly perhaps a [sic] should be added for clarification. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.85.24.5 (talk) 23:49, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
