editing of article by MIFF staff

The following message was left on my talk page:

My name is Jaie Laplante, and I am the executive director of the Miami International Film Festival. I have currently assigned an assistant to expand the Wikipedia article on our entity in the spirit of sharing knowledge with people who are interested in the work we are doing, to capture the spirit of the learning and teaching that Wikimedia Foundation is all about. We have been quite mindful of complying with Wikipedia's regulations and procedures so I'm a little mystified about why you have deleted his updates and blocked/prevented him from continuing to work on the article? The material he is referencing is our own, and as a staff member he has been cleared to use it for informational purposes of contributing to the knowledge pool about Miami International Film Festival.

Please let me know how you would prefer that we proceed, so that we may continue on with the project. My contact information is below, I look forward to your positive reply.

Kind regards,

Jaie Laplante Executive Director

Miami International Film Festival

I am transferring the discussion to here. Applicable policies are:

  • Wikipedia:Verifiability, which requires that all material in an article be verifiable from reliable sources, i.e., "articles should be based on reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy."
  • Wikipedia:Neutral point of view - "Editing from a neutral point of view (NPOV) means representing fairly, proportionately, and as far as possible without bias, all significant views that have been published by reliable sources."
  • Wikipedia:No original research - "Wikipedia articles must not contain original research. The term "original research" (OR) is used on Wikipedia to refer to material—such as facts, allegations, and ideas—for which no reliable, published sources exist."

Other applicable policies and guidelines are:

If you know of reliable, third-party, published sources about the festival, you can list them here and let uninvolved editors see how they can be incorporated into the article. I advise you, however, to be careful about you or your staff editing the article, as it will be difficult for you to edit from a neutral point of view. -- Donald Albury 17:57, 24 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

One thing I can say happened is that Laplante whitewashed the actual beginnings of the festival. As contemporaneous news reporting from the time shows, the festival began in 1978, not 1983, and under a different director that Laplante states.
And the festival itself cannot state that it "has introduced filmmakers from more than 60 countries to audiences in South Florida." Are they really claiming no theater in South Florida ever showed an Abel Ferrara or Almodovar film before one played at the festival? Whether that's dubious or not, and I believe it is, that type of claim has to come from a third-party source and not from the festival itself. Anybody can claim to be the first to do something, but that's an WP:EXCEPTIONAL claim and so must come from a reliable outside source. I'm removing that self-serving paragraph.--2604:2000:C5D4:1100:6C55:813:91FE:4311 (talk) 15:11, 8 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Miami International Film FestivalMiami Film Festival – This is its current name, but a DAB exists there. As the short film festival has a distinct name, and there are no others on the list, I think that hatnotes would serve the purpose for redirecting from one to the other.
