Surely the first West End production of Loot was in 1966 not 1976.Bedwasboy (talk) 06:02, 4 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

My Edit

edit

I corrected the name of the character in Loot, and the date. I deleted a word because it was not the first production (see the Loot article for all these details). And I added a note about his classical work.

ethic heritage

edit

Can anyone confirm whether Mr Bates was of mixed race, or of (wholly) English/British descent. The article, and the anglo-Indian article don't make it clear. (46.204.39.152 (talk) 12:33, 16 April 2013 (UTC))Reply

I am confused by this too. Though I have found a post by the Sandhurst Trust on Facebook that says that his father was Anglo-Indian. https://www.facebook.com/sandhursttrust/posts/the-son-of-an-anglo-indian-civil-servant-michael-hammond-bates-was-born-in-jhans/3138481789513458/. Certainly, from my own experience, my mother was born and brought up in Burma in the 20s, but would never call herself Anglo-Burmese. To her, that would be someone with a Burmese parent and an English parent. Joss (talk) 21:47, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Encyclopedia Britannica clarifies the term: "Anglo-Indian, in India, a citizen of mixed Indian and, through the paternal line, European ancestry. From roughly the 18th to the early 20th century, the term referred specifically to British people working in India. The meaning of the term Anglo-Indian has to some degree been in a state of flux throughout its history." 2A00:23C8:8F9F:4801:6D36:1531:8D53:4431 (talk) 19:59, 6 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

No ethnicity in lead

edit

Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies#Context: "Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability." We only give the nationality, which in Bates' case is English. --Tenebrae (talk) 13:54, 21 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

"Fall of Eagles" should be in the list of TV roles

edit

Currently, "Fall of Eagles" is listed among Bates' movie credits. But it was a TV mini-series, not a film. As such, it should be in the list of TV roles.
