Why someone's removing the contestants

Hello, today I got so mad today because someone removed all the contestants for Miss Universe 2023, and I'd like to report him/her/they. Thank you. Hitsme (talk) 14:08, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Relevance of the "Upcoming Pageants" section

How did you come to a conclusion that this section was irrelevant to the whole competition. It would be most helpful to provide for the viewers of this page, as to lessen hassle and provide information as to what and which country will have their reps next and the like. Just like on other pageant articles, this seemed so relevant as they contain each article every year before the competition starts. Have you even noticed that? Not everyone are notified of these so-called "changes" (if there is one), and the general public are unaware that this section now is "irrelevant". Please do explain how "irrelevant" this section is. Otherwise, revert. Thanks and have a good day. Jesteron27 (talk) 04:45, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

Pinging @Drmies and @Bri as both of you removed the section. 9️⃣8️⃣🐯♒️ 05:05, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
User:98Tigerius, thanks for the ping, but I am having a hard time "reading" your signature. Jesteron27, that other articles have it doesn't make it right. If you are going to compare, look at FAs and GAs. Of course there are no FAs and GAs for pageants, as far as I know, so the best comparison might be a sporting competition--and we don't find "Upcoming events" there. In articles like 2017 World Series we find a link in the infobox to the next World Series, but that's handled economically and elegantly, with minimum distraction. Lo and behold, that is precisely what we have in the infobox here: an arrow pointing back to 2022, and there could be one pointing forward to 2023. Besides, the whole "Upcoming pageants" is totally arbitrary: there are literally dozens if not hundreds of those upcoming, so I have no idea why you'd pick six of them but not the others.
What else? There's a complaint about not notifying people? First of all, no editor is going to notify all involved editors of a change: you didn't notify anyone when you made this edit--and you didn't even leave an edit summary. Nor did you notify anyone of your comment here--I assume "you" means me, but if it hadn't been for 98Tigerius I wouldn't have known. Drmies (talk) 14:29, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
See Miss Earth 2023, Miss International 2023, Miss Grand International 2023, Miss World 2023 as they are also pageants with an "Upcoming pageants" section (not word-by-word but similar, and you'll know it once you see it). How come they still have them the last time I've checked. The reason why the others aren't there is because they aren't confirmations or credible news resources to back up those information. And I didn't pick them; they are the only ones with supporting claims to back them up. Otherwise, why put a date when it's just pure speculation. Yes, both sports and pageants are both competitions, but they are hugely incomparable as sports have no evening gown, swimsuit, and intelligence segments. Jesteron27 (talk) 01:15, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
As for the comparison with sporting events, it's true that there may not be "Upcoming events" tables for these types of articles, and instead, they may have links to future events in the infobox. However, it's also important to consider that pageants and sporting events are different types of competitions with different characteristics and requirements, and what works well for one may not necessarily work for the other.
Regarding the arbitrary selection of upcoming events in the table, it's important to ensure that the information presented is relevant and well-sourced, and it may be difficult to include every single upcoming event. The ones that were there are well-sourced, that's why they are there, and not the others. As I reiterate, not every national pageant is covered by media or reliable news reports. However, I do appreciate your feedback on this issue. Jesteron27 (talk) 01:25, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
As far as I'm concerned there's a whole lot of pageant articles including this one going against what Wikipedia is not. Just to touch on a few problems with the upcoming televised events table(s): not a crystal ball; not a means of promotion; not a collection of indiscriminate information; not a TV guide. "Oh, but then the annual pageant article would just be a plain statement of the winner". Yeah that's right and it should probably be redirected to the pageant series. In short, not much about pageants is encyclopedic as far as I can see. ☆ Bri (talk) 17:55, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
Just a point from me. I don't really mind where this discussion goes either way, but the "upcoming pageants" table reminds me of what is done on Eurovision Song Contest articles. As the 2023 competition is in just one month and all entrants are already selected, this isn't featured currently, but when the date of a country's announcement or national competition is known, the sourced date with "TBD" or "TBA" is placed in the table of participants under the country in question to denote that the participant will become known on that date. Scrolling through Eurovision Song Contest 2019 or Eurovision Song Contest 2018, I think it'd be hard to argue that these are poorly written articles that need improvement, and this format for upcoming selections was decided by community consensus years ago, and the community there is much larger than the one here. I don't see how what is done there is significantly different from what has been done here, if there are reliable sources confirming a scheduled date that is directly relevant to this article. Where I do agree, is these pageant articles are not patrolled enough and these tables become full of unsourced or poorly sourced claims quickly, but if editors are here to keep a watchful eye and remove dates that are not reliably sourced, I don't see the issue with this. If the table itself and separate section is too bothersome, perhaps we could align more with Eurovision articles and simply add country rows to the contestants table with "TBD [Sourced Date]" instead. Personally, I think it is highly useful to include these upcoming dates as these are relevant points of interest for readers who are interested in Miss Universe articles. As for @Drmies:'s claims of the upcoming pageants table being arbitrary, I think it is as simple as a) only some pageants are qualifiers for Miss Universe, b) not all qualifiers for Miss Universe have a known date at any given point, and c) not all qualifiers for Miss Universe with a known date have reliable sources to confirm that date. When a pageant has all three points, it has been included in the table. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 15:18, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much for that response. That section will always be relevant to beauty pageants, no matter how they think it isn't. Have a great day! Jesteron27 (talk) 15:51, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
This is a good take. I just want to say thanks you so much for this reply. It made no sense to me whatsoever why they made a drastic decision to remove that, when it is such an integral part in beauty pageant articles. I was surprised to say the least. And you definitely made your point, which I found very helpful in this case. Thank so much once more. Have a great day! Jesteron27 (talk) 15:55, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

She had covid in the final night but she did give performance in the preliminary competition and also did the preliminary interview. But I guess that now counts withdrawing if you can't be there in the final night, even if you didn't make it to the top 16. But she is still listed there as contestant... Blackfoxwhitewolf (talk) 23:41, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
A similar case happened in 2009 when Miss Turks & Caicos Jewel Selver withdrew before the final night (and was counted as a withdrawal in the wiki). I guess as long as you didn't compete in the final night it's considered a withdrawal. Milesq (talk) 17:25, 12 June 2023 (UTC)

Indira Ampiot as Miss Universe France

Was Indira Ampiot already appointed as the representative of Miss France at Miss Universe? Currently I do not see any articles announcing that Ampiot is the French representative of Miss Universe. I can only see articles pertraining to Ampiot winning Miss France. In the meantime, please do not add Ampiot as Miss Universe France since there could still be a possibility that Diane Leyre might represent France following the recent pattern of Miss France where the former Miss France or the runner-up is appointed as the French representative to Miss Universe. Allyriana000 (talk) 07:15, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

There are none actually, usually Miss France announces who goes to their international pageants weeks before departures. And besides, if you follow the tradition of Miss France winners, competing internationally is just an option for them. Milesq (talk) 04:58, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello! I am concerned about a new section going on in the 1950s articles and I'm afraid it may reach here. A gallery of contestants is being added where every contestant is shown with a picture. I am usually okay with this, but what I concern about is that the pictures, from @Piggytwokids, look like they are enhanced using artificial intelligence, and then recolored, and the original photo is usually from a photo that it is not allowed to add at Wikipedia due to copyright issues, although the images, according to the said user, are their work.

I do not know where to stand at this point. I wish you could help me decide whether or not this section should stay. Allyriana000 (talk) 14:32, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

Regarding this, I do think including a gallery would just be nothing but trivial and would not add any encyclopedic content at all, especially if the added ones are not even notable by any means. Also, copyright issues would also have to be considered in here, even if it was AI-enhanced. Even the titleholders alone it's hard to keep a gallery due to copyright, so doing one for every edition is having another section prone to issues. Milesq (talk) 19:30, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
@Allyriana000 I also checked the articles, and it seems to be a case of self-promo as well, which clearly violates wiki guidelines. Milesq (talk) 19:32, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
@Milesq I do agree that it seems too trivial and is a case of self-promotion as well. I guess I should wait for others to comment regarding this matter before we come up with what action should we do. Thank you! Allyriana000 (talk) 02:16, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
I am no expert, but I fully agree that something like that is not okay. C.b.w85 (talk) 17:26, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
I am not strictly opposed to the idea of adding a gallery for editions where we have free use images of contestants who took part. Considering this is a beauty pageant, I think there is an argument for contestant images being a pretty relevant part of the competition and adding a gallery wouldn't be as trivial as it would be in an industry where physical appearance is not the main point of the competition. But if these galleries are being mass-added to articles using non-free images, they should be removed, particularly if these are AI images that are not even genuine representations of the individuals themselves. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 02:31, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
Okay update, apparently we are all correct about the copyright part which lead to the removal of the section in question. Thank you all for giving a comment about this matter and I wish we would continue to improve these articles. Thank you! Allyriana000 (talk) 12:47, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
It looks like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Piggytwokids has been blocked on Commons, and all their contributions have been deleted, so this isn't as relevant as it could be. But in principle:
  • I wouldn't be against a gallery of free images on such articles; first, as User:Jjj1238 writes, what the contestants look like is a big part of the contest. Second, while most contestants aren't otherwise notable, a non-negligible number do go on to notable careers in entertainment, journalism, and modeling, far more than 50 randomly chosen people.
  • However I'm worried about non-free images; AI generated images where we don't have free images, are either derivative, so non free, or just not accurate, by definition.
  • Finally, I would actually love if we had a good AI way to improve free images. I've been uploading free images from old newspapers ({{PD-US-no notice}} and {{PD-US-not renewed}}) but they're usually grainy, and I'd love a way to automatically improve them. I've been playing with contrast and brightness, but they can only do so much. I ran the original of File:Linda Bement, Miss USA.jpg through https://app.remini.ai/ and though it did a slight improvement to the face, it also gave her a hairy chest and hairy knuckles! --GRuban (talk) 13:05, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
I do agree on your first two points, but for the third one I am kind of iffy. Any image enhanced by AI would not be an image that portrays the truth but rather, a fantasy. Let's say a contestant's picture was enhanced almost perfectly. It may be perfect, but artificial intelligence tends to deviated a bit from her features. Sometimes, artificial intelligence may not catch the contestant's mole, or a may change the way her hair looks like. There will always be an alteration to that "photo" which would cause the image to not represent the truth. Wikipedia only accepts the truth, and never an allegation, a fantasy, a guess. That is why I am opposed to adding an AI-enhanced photo to a truth-based article. Allyriana000 (talk) 13:41, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
Eh. Whenever anyone enhances any photo they're changing something. Who's to say that blur in the original that a human editor sharpened out wasn't hiding a mole? Or that the torn photo corner that was cloned over didn't have some bit of actual content? Photo enhancement is an art, not a science; in the end the user who uploads the enhanced image is the one who takes responsibility that their edit was an improvement. AI is as much a tool as the "brighten", "sharpen" or "contrast" buttons, and like them can be used well or poorly. --GRuban (talk) 15:07, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

Reliable sources

I have noticed in recent edits that some editors use Instagram blog posts as a citation for crucial information about the pageant (date, location, etc.) when Wikipedia:WikiProject Beauty Pageants/Sources says self published blogs and fan sites are clearly not reliable. I'm adamant about removing it since I don't want to start an edit war. Good day. Milesq (talk) 03:28, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

For me, if a source is an Instagram source, I add the "Better sources needed" tag if I know you could find a better source, not just by simply removing it. I did it at on Miss World 2023 and unfortunately those tags are still there so I wish someone could provide better sources. Some of these Instagram sources are not from blogs but from the organizations themselves, so I kind of give way instead of remove it entirely. Allyriana000 (talk) 03:59, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Upcoming pageant: Myanmar (Burma) 🇲🇲

C.b.w85 (talk) 17:29, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Withdrawals

Hello! I wanted to explain my reasoning for my edit for withdrawals, these countries do not have a national director, which means they dropped their license, countries like: Armenia, Ghana, Belize, Seychelles, and Haiti. So we should assume that they will withdrawal unless they do get a national director. Thank you! C.b.w85 (talk) 02:27, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

I mean, just because a country dropped their license, it does not mean actual withdrawal. That's what many speculated about Slovakia yet we soon got a delegate. There are also no articles saying withdrawal, just relinquishing of license and that's two different things. Remember that Wikipedia is not a crystal ball and hence speculated content must not be added. Milesq (talk) 03:33, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Miss Pakistan and Miss Egypt

Hello, good day where ever you are, I wanted to let everyone know that Miss Pakistan and Miss Egypt are owned by the same national director. So, whenever Miss Pakistan/Miss Egypt announces their upcoming pageant date, (most likely Miss Pakistan will) Miss Egypt will also likely be there too. Just like Miss Universe Singapore and Miss Universe New Zealand. Takk skal du ha! Love from Norway 🇳🇴 C.b.w85 (talk) 17:29, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

I think you haven't been examining the citations. On Australia's reference, it was indicated that New Zealand will be crowned on the same date. However, if you checked Bahrain's reference there are no mentions of the coronation dates for Egypt and Pakistan. So to correlate one thing just because the existence of it's relations is a form of WP:CRYSTAL violation, and hence must be removed. Good day. Milesq (talk) 06:17, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Why is Miss Universe New Zealand and Miss Universe Singapore not held on the same date as Miss Universe Australia? I mean, they belong to the same organization right? Correct me if I'm wrong but is there a confirmation on different dates for these contests (or the same for that matter), or not? Change Miss Mexico's hometown

As indicated in the article linked to her, her hometown is Venustiano Carranza. Please do edit this. Thanks.

Edit: I've changed the link to the actual town. My apologies.49.144.36.153 (talk) 06:47, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

Why isn't it changed yet? 49.144.36.153 (talk) 08:48, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
Please change it. 49.144.36.153 (talk) 01:10, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

It is redirecting to the country Singapore, not the national organization. There is a Wikipedia article regarding Miss Universe Singapore (click that link). 180.195.112.70 (talk) 00:48, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Already done and fixed the link. Milesq (talk) 01:50, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

Miss Cyprus returning is legitimate?

Is there a legitimate source that would indicate Cyprus on returning to Miss Universe, as there wasn't any citation to support that "claim". If there isn't, please remove unofficial information. However if there is, just add it there so that everyone would be informed. Thanks. 2001:4453:682:8500:703F:83E2:7494:96F7 (talk) 10:29, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

It is not legitimate. I searched across the internet and found nothing but fan pages of Miss Cyprus. They hadn't sent a candidate at Miss Universe since 2013. Allyriana000 (talk) 10:47, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for noticing and reverting it! 2001:4453:682:8500:703F:83E2:7494:96F7 (talk) 11:48, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

If Denmark is confirmed to return, then add the contestant because they already had a competition a few months ago. Also, I edited this page a lot of times so I don’t know why I’m locked out of it now. 2603:8001:8B00:E09:1880:87C:8E55:2216 (talk) 16:30, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Paper9oll (🔔📝) 18:47, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
As said by the organization, the winner of the national pageant does not immediately mean she's going to Miss Universe (like Miss France); hence they will be revealing it in due time whoever will be Denmark's delegate this year. Milesq (talk) 01:43, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Miss Turkey

Why Turkey competing at Miss universe 2024 but not 2023? 2024 Upcoming Pageants say Turkey is competing Wywuwuwu (talk) 03:17, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Turkey is not indicated at the list of national directors for this year. The Miss Universe website contains that list, and Turkey is not. Therefore, only refer to that list as to which countries are competing this year, and which aren't. 180.195.112.70 (talk) 11:53, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Miss Kyrgyzstan

Is Kyrgyzstan not supposed to compete this year? Diami Almazbekova was in the contestants’ list but she was removed. And now there has been no reports of a Miss Kyrgyzstan competition. Are we sure Almazbekova is not competing at MU 2023? Wywuwuwu (talk) 09:01, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

Diami is confirmed NOT to compete. There was supposed to be a competition, since they are on the list of national directors for this year. However, they may be sending an appointed candidate by next month probably, or a week before the arrivals on El Salvador. 180.195.112.70 (talk) 11:54, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Controversies regarding Indonesia and Pakistan

I came across this article from The Independent where the Prime Minister of Pakistan actually disowns Erica Robin, the candidate of Pakistan for this edition. This article led to ask if we should add the Controversies before the pageant sub-section of the Background section of this article. Not only Pakistan has an issue with their nat'l organization but Indonesia as well, where allegations of sexual harassment to the contestants led to a great controversy that was spread across the world.

Now Vietnam also has a controversy Allyriana000 (talk) 21:18, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

National Director's List — Withdrawals

if we take the national Director's list as a reference, aren't the withdrawals already confirmed? So we should add the withdrawals by now. Wywuwuwu (talk) 14:22, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

If that would be the case Malaysia should be removed from the roster as they are not in the ND list (then again, I prefer waiting for the official list of delegates to be published by MUO before adding any withdrawals). Milesq (talk) 15:29, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
I agree. 49.144.32.130 (talk) 10:12, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

South Sudan going to Miss Universe instead of Miss Grand in Vietnam due to her visa cancellation

As for South Sudan, there's no other source other than from Amylia Deng's IG story since she can't "compete at MGI on Vietnam due to her visa being cancelled", she is "determined to represent her country at Miss Universe" this year. I need a consensus as to whether to put her there or not. 49.144.32.130 (talk) 10:04, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

We should wait a little until Miss Universe confirms it officially. Would be happy to see South Sudan debuting this year though 💕 Wywuwuwu (talk) 12:13, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
Sure. When will they release the official list of candidates for this year? 49.144.32.130 (talk) 14:46, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
Amylia Deng is preparing for 2024, not 2023. Allyriana000 (talk) 04:57, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

Kyrgyzstan's replacement

Good evening, since a new Miss Universe Kyrgyzstan was crowned hours ago, I would like to present to you my concerns regarding to their previous supposed-to-be contestant.

It would be a good idea if we state this in the "Selection of Participants" subsection, that Diami Almazbekova, the supposedly original representative, was replaced mysteriously by Maya Turdalieva for unknown reasons. You can rephrase the whole statement if you want. I just wanted to see if you agreed to add this in the section. Thanks! LikeRealTimes (talk) 02:15, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

Will do, the reason I believe is she was not prepared, but no article has stated that. Allyriana000 (talk) 04:58, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

Miss Universe Bangladesh

What's going on with Bangladesh competin this year? The competition is next month and they haven't even announced a date yet. Wywuwuwu (talk) 15:31, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

Miss Bahrain

Miss Bahrain should be on the debut list as well!!!??? 74.192.104.253 (talk) 07:07, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Bulgaria

Is the contestant for Bulgaria confirmed? The removal of age limits would not be imposed this year, so it would be unlikely to appoint a delegate beyond the age limit for this year. Please do confirm this information (on the appointment per se). 180.195.116.51 (talk) 01:45, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Miss Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan has withdrew from the competition due to visa issues. Wywuwuwu (talk) 04:33, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Source? Stop spreading misleading information here. Back it up or back this out. Kyrgyzstan is competing at Miss Universe 2023. 2001:4453:625:1300:CC90:8211:4BE7:B47 (talk) 16:27, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

Idk if this is confirmed yet but kyrgyzstan cant compete because of security reasons LousPlushies (talk) 22:35, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

Miss Pakistan

it's already day 4 and there are still no updates if she landed on El Salvador. Some are speculating she already withdrew because of issues with her visa. What are your thoughts? LousPlushies (talk) 09:07, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

Until there is a confirmation that Miss Pakistan withdrew, we would not consider Erica as a part of the withdrawals. Allyriana000 (talk) 10:36, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

Under Location and Date, add at the end of the paragraph: The choice of El Salvador as host country has been met with some criticism [1][2] due to the country's ongoing state of emergency,[3][4] a kind of prolonged martial law. Congarras (talk) 22:55, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Mention of Absence for Korea & Iceland

Korea and Iceland were noticeably missing from the perliminary, do we still know if they are competing. 72.79.26.151 (talk) 01:10, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
