Born in Calcutta on 18th September, 1946, Justice Mukundakam Sharma matriculated from Don Bosco School, Guwahati and pursued his Pre-University studies from Cotton College, Guwahati. Upon graduating from Ramjas College, Delhi University, he went on to complete his M.A., LLB and Ph.D from Gauhati University[1].

Appointment to the Judiciary
editJustice Sharma was appointed as a Judge of the Guwahati High Court on 10 January 1994. He was transferred to Patna High Court and to the Ranchi Bench in February 1994. He was transferred to Delhi High Court and took oath on 12th December, 1994 where he worked as a Permanent Judge from 1994 until his appointment as Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court from 28th November, 2006 to 3rd December, 2006. Justice Sharma was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on 4th December, 2006. Subsequently, he was elevated as the Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 9th April, 2008[1] and retired therefrom on 17th September, 2011[2]. Justice Sharma was appointed as Chairman, Vamsadhara River Water Dispites Tribunal by notification issued on 30th March, 2011 where he has been working as such till date.
Projects and Committees
editJustice Sharma was associated with the project, “India Administrative Justice” undertaken by Asian Development Bank, in collaboration with the Department of Justice, Government of India. Was the Chairman of the Project Monitoring committee and also Member of the Steering Committee of the project. Extensively visited various cities of Pakistan during the course of the Pilot Project and acquired indepth knowledge and information about justice delivery system in Pakistan. (Redacted)

editJustice Sharma has been been participating in number of National and International Seminars on various topics. Inaugurated many national seminars, presided over some of the Technical Sessions of International Seminars. (Redacted) He was invited by WIPO Geneva to act as Expert Resource Person to Symposium held in Kathmandu in 2013. He played a prominent role in spreading awareness as well as charting the future course of the upcoming and vital field of Commercial Law including Property Rights and Arbitration law through judgments and participation in several national and international conferences. (Redacted) He was one of the key Speakers in International Seminar on Intellectual Property rights held in Boston (USA).
Academic Positions
editJustice Sharma was the Chancellor of National Law University, New Delhi in the capacity of being the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court and was appointed as Visitor of NLU Delhi. He is closely connected with the activities of National Law School, Guwahati and is a member of the management committee. He has been delivering lectures in the National Schools and Law Colleges of India and also in the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal and State Judicial Academies. He delivered convocation addresses in universities such as Meerut University, Sampoornanand University, Gurukul Kangri University, Dibrugarh University, Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth (a deemed University), Rashtriya Sanskrit University, Tirupati and Dibrugarh University. He was appointed as Chancellor of Lal Bahadur Shastri Sanskrit Vidyapeeth (a deemed University) w.e.f. 11.1.2012 for a period 5 years[1].
