Article must be move protected

Mumbai article must be move protected owing to constant page name dispute. The article Mumbai no reason to be moved. Karthik Nadar (talk) 11:54, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Ridiculous:Economy

The economy of Mumbai is $205 billion. According to the 2011 Census, Mumbai (metro) has 22 million citizens. If you divide the former by the latter, one gets $9,318 as the per-capita income. Please check this yourself. The given per-capita income is ridiculously low at $2,850. I suggest that we find proper references and change this embarassing mistake. AnkitBhattTalk to me!!LifEnjoy 17:30, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

You are right. I think we should use the data from the first reference which is data from PWC, it lists GDP at $205 billion and per capita income at $10800. That would mean that the data is from the same year and PWC is a highly regarded research and analysis company and not just some newspaper article like livemint. Sentence regarding Mumbai being India's terror capital

Is this really relevant enough to be a part of the introduction? The section Independent India has a full paragraph describing the terror strikes on the city. I feel this sentence should be moved to that section where it is more appropriate. — Siddharth Prabhu (talk) 10:08, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Largest?

Just looking at the recent Census data, isn't Delhi now the most populous municipal corporation (city proper) in India? Mumbai is no doubt still the largest urban agglomeration, but when we say "city" we're talking the municipal corporation/city proper/local government. --Criticalthinker (talk) 09:42, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Mumbai is still the largest city and Urban Agglomeration in India. --Commander (Ping Me) 11:03, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
So, the data for municipal corporations have been released? Can you point me to the data? --Criticalthinker (talk) 13:04, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
Right here. For convenience, I've posted the data here:
Mumbai (municipal corp): 12,478,447
Delhi (municipal corp): 11,007,835
Therefore, Mumbai is still the largest city. Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 13:49, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

Metro Population

The beginning of the article states Mumbai's metropolitan population as 20.5 million (without a reference) whereas in the right side box it lists the population as the Censusindia 18,414,288 figure. Where did this 20.5 million figure come from and should it be changed to the 18 million figure?

Ryan — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.111.142.233 (talk) 11:57, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

The 18.4 million figure is the population the Mumbai Urban agglomeration, whereas the 20 million figure represents the population of the Mumbai Metropolitan Area. Many cities like London and NewYork have specific boundaries for defining the UA and metropolitan areas. But the difference between UA and MA is unclear for Indian cities. --Commander (Ping Me) 16:49, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
But are any references of 20.5 mln? Bogomolov.PL (talk) 19:51, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion:Neighborhoods

Hi I am a visitor in Mumbai right now and was looking at the article for some more information. One section that is missing which I think would be of tremendous value is a section on "Layout of the City" or "Neighborhoods." I know some other articles regarding cities have these (e.g., New_York_City#Boroughs). Once I return from my travels, maybe I can take a rough stab at it myself... :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.4.129.30 (talk) 07:31, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Here's a section from Wikitravel that is Creative Commons so we can tweak and use here

Mumbai is a city built in successive waves of migrations. The neighborhoods acquired their character from the communities that settled there first. These neighborhoods are too numerous to list and there is no commonly accepted way to group these neighborhoods into larger districts. But roughly, from the south to the north, this is how the city developed.

South Mumbai (Fort, Colaba, Malabar Hill, Nariman Point, Marine Lines, Tardeo)

The oldest areas of Mumbai. Contains Mumbai's downtown area and is considered the heart of this commercial capital of India. The richest neighborhoods in the country are located here, which command among the highest property rates in the world. Real estate prices in South Mumbai are comparable to those in Manhattan. This is the primary tourist area of Mumbai and home to most of Mumbai's museums, art galleries, bars, upscale restaurants, and the Gateway of India.

South Central Mumbai (Byculla, Parel, Worli, Prabhadevi, Dadar)

Used to be Mumbai's industrial heartland, but went into decline when the industries did. Now this area has been revamped into a white-collar office location. Home to Mumbai's only zoo, the Worli sea face, and the temple to what people consider the city's guardian deity. As you move north, it morphs into a nice middle-class locality.

North Central Mumbai (Dharavi, Matunga, Vadala, Sion, Mahim)

Primarily an upper middle-class area. This area developed immediately after India's independence, because of a wave of immigration. Part of the migrants were refugees from the partition.

Western Suburbs (Bandra, Khar, Santa Cruz, Juhu, Vile Parle, Andheri, Jogeshvari, Goregaon, Malad, Kandavali)

Contains Mumbai's other downtown and is home to those rich who want to have a more peaceful surrounding. It has few beaches. Home to a large Christian community and the city's most famous church. This is also where the city's domestic and international airports are.

Central Suburbs (Kurla, Vidyavihar, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Kanjur Marg, Bhandup, Mulund, Powai,Thane)

This is a solidly middle class bastion. Mulund and Ghatkopar are home to predominantly middle and upper middle class populace, many from the entrepreneurial Gujarati community.

Harbour Suburbs (Chembur, Mankhurd, Govandi, Trombay)

Before the development of Navi Mumbai as a satellite town of Bombay, this area used to be known only for the existence of an atomic research centre. Now this is known for being on the way to Navi Mumbai.

Northwest Mumbai (Manori, Jogeshwari, Borivali, Gorai, Mira Road, Bhyander, Naigaon, Vasai, Nala Sopara, Virar)

This is where you go to find beaches that are not dirty. Other than this, it is just another victim of Bombay's vast urban sprawl. Contains the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Mumbai's oldest heritage sites: the Kanheri, Mahakali, Jogeshwari, and Mandapeshwar rock-cut temples dating from the 1st century B.C to the 5th century A.D. The Global Vipassana Pagoda is a notable monument in Gorai, Mumbai, India. The pagoda is to serve as a monument of peace and harmony. This monument was inaugurated by Pratibha Patil, the President of India on 8 February 2009. It is located in the north of Mumbai in an area called Gorai and is built on donated land on a peninsula between Gorai creek and the Arabian Sea. Essel world, India's largest amusement park is also located on the gorai island, just besides the global vipassana pagoda.

Not done This reads more like a POV guide that includes innumerable individual thoughts and opinions about the various geographic locales of the city (for example, This is where you go to find beaches that are not dirty, ...as a satellite town of Bombay, this area used to be known only for the existence of... etc.). RESPECTED SIR, My name is Saurav Surve from Mumbai,India. I wanted to see the profile of SUBODH KUMAR, who is the Municipal Commissioner of our city. I saw his profile on WIKIPEDIA. But in the post of the Municipal Commissioner of our city, you have given the profile of other SUBODH KUMAR who is a Football player playing for EAST BENGAL FOOTBALL CLUB. So I wanted to bring this correction to your notice. The information of the 'REAL' Municipal Commissioner is given below:

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation started the New Year with a new Municipal Commissioner, less than two months before the budget estimates for the next fiscal are to be presented. On Monday, Subodh Kumar, who was additional secretary department of telecommunication in the Central government, took over from Swadheen Kshatriya who has been transferred to the state revenue department as principal secretary after a 13-month stint as Municipal Commissioner.

The transfer has raised eyebrows since Kshatriya’s tenure has been one of the shortest by any commissioner in the BMC in recent years. Kumar is not entirely new to the BMC and was its additional municipal commissioner (projects) between 1998 and 2001. Kumar is known for his expertise in financial matters.

Kshatriya refused to accept that the recent criticism of the BMC’s financial mismanagement by CM Prithviraj Chavan could have been behind his transfer. “We IAS officers get orders from the government and we have to act accordingly. If the Maharashtra government wants me to join its revenue department, I have to do it without asking them for the reason. My tenure in the BMC was short, but it was fruitful in many ways. Since Subodh Kumar is more senior and better experienced than me, I am sure his presence will benefit the BMC,” said Kshatriya.

Kumar said he was vaguely aware of the financial mismanagement and technical problems rampant in the BMC since the double accounting system was introduced along with SAP. “A governing body should never be afraid of change and it is natural for some problems to arise when something as huge as the whole accounting system is modified. I will try to speed up the work towards solving the issues. I am still not fully aware of the financial condition that the BMC is in, but I am sure I will get the required knowledge from my colleagues,” said Kumar a 1977 batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre.

Kumar has also worked as Principal Secretary (Finance) and as Excise Commissioner and Sales Tax Commissioner. He has also worked as Textile Commissioner at the Centre and Chief of Mumbai Housing. Kumar was also part of the auction of 3G and BWA Spectrum in Telecom Ministry which raked in Rs 1,06,000 crore for the government.

I HOPE YOU WILL EDIT THE INFORMATION WHICH IS TRUE TO MY KNOWLEDGE. THANK YOU.

                                                                                                      YOURS FAITHFULLY

POV edit war, again

I know people born and raised there who continue to call it "Bombay" when speaking English, and of course we've been over this many times: it's a close call whether the article itself should be at "Mumbai" or "Bombay". — kwami (talk) 23:00, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

This has been discussed many times before. My opinion is that a city has an official name although all other names do not cease to exist. The official name is now Mumbai, whether it is in Marathi or Gujarati language or English language. There is no such thing as Mumbai in Marathi & Gujarati, Bambai in Hindi and Bombay in English. The introduction should be Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. In the article there should be a mention that the city is still referred by many as Bambai or Bombay and that many societies, companies, and organisations retain the name Bombay, eg Bombay Stock Exchange. All 3 names still refer to this city but imho the official name is now Mumbai. Since this topic has been discussed previously and voted upon by many editors, i would not suggest you to change it now. Ninadhardikar (talk) 04:50, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
That is factually wrong. It is not formerly known as Bombay, it is currently known as Bombay. It is officially known as Mumbai, but we don't follow what's official, we follow what's common in English. Bombay is common in English, as is Mumbai. The lead is factually correct as it stands. — kwami (talk) 07:31, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

No name in any Indic language

I came to this article looking for the name of the city in Marathi & Gujarati, the local languages of the city. Showing names in local languages and scripts is something that Wikipedia can be very proud about. Imagine my surprise when I saw that it's not here. "OK," I thought, "I can read Devanagari and I can copy it from the articles in local languages."

Imagine my even bigger surprise when I saw the message: "PLEASE DO ''not'' ADD NAMES IN GUJARATI, MARATHI, HINDI, AND OTHER LANGUAGES HERE. IT HAS BEEN DECIDED THAT, TO AVOID EDIT WARS."

Come on. Deleting useful information to avoid edit wars? Where is this decision and on which policy is it based? I suppose that if there was, indeed, a decision about it, then it's buried somewhere in one of the 14 archives, but there should be a prominent link there, like there's on the top of Talk:Kiev. Can anyone please add it? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:02, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

I wonder if it's worth making an infobox along the lines of Template:Infobox Chinese (see pages like Shanghai for its use for cities) for Indina languages. 86.21.250.191 (talk) 15:00, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
I agree with you, but I think people just got tired of the chronic POV pushing. The problem is that if you list it in one language, people start screaming 'discrimination' until you list a dozen, and the article just becomes a mess.
An infobox may be a solution. If you want to draw one up, and it looks reasonable, I'll support you. — kwami (talk) 00:05, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Population

Apologies if this has been discussed previously but I am somewhat confused as to some of the included population figures; The introduction to the article states the population is around 20.6 million, I'm presuming this is including surrounding regions (?) futher down the article the figure 13,479,608 population according to the 2011 census. However the media section states that there are 14.3 million internet users in Mumbai conflicting with the census population figure. Google, however, has the figure 14,922,125 as of 2010. Which figure is most accurate and should be used? Thank you! Mollyhj96 (talk) 11:09, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Typo fix

Third paragraph of the lead, last sentence "derieved" should be "derived." The usual expression in American English is "derived from" rather than "derived after" but this may be a local variation and shouldn't be changed if it's used that way in India, MoS last I checked requires use of local styles for articles where there is an appropriate local variant of English. 150.148.0.65 (talk) 19:49, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

In local usage, the name is also believed to be originated from 'Mum'-'baa'-'aai', each of the words means Mother in English, Gujarati and Marathi respectively, re-iterating the theme of being the Motherland. Marathi and Gujarati being the major demographics as previously Gujarat and Maharashtra was a unified state under Bombay province.

This article refers to "lakh" when citing numbers. Foreign readers would not know that 1 lakh = 100,000. To save readers outside India the annoyance of looking up lakh and then mentally multiplying all 8 instances of "lakh" by 100,000, it would be better to state numbers in a pure numerical format. Marathi native name

The edit page says "PLEASE DO NOT ADD NAMES IN MARATHI, HINDI, GUJARATI, AND OTHER LANGUAGES HERE. IT HAS BEEN DECIDED THAT, TO AVOID EDIT WARS."

I find this bizarre. Mumbai is administered by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, whose official language is Marathi. Mumbai is the capital of the state of Maharashtra, whose official language is also Marathi. Marathi is also the majority language spoken by natives of Maharashtra. The page for Moscow shows a native name in Russian, Chennai shows Tamil, Delhi shows Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi, Colombo shows Sinhala and Tamil.

I see no good reason to add Hindi, Gujarati or other languages as native languages for Mumbai and a policy like this certainly should not be instated merely to prevent edit wars. We must reach consensus on this rather than avoid the topic altogether. Sabre (talk) 18:58, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

If you get consensus to change the warning, then go ahead and change it. RudolfRed (talk) 19:45, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
I think you mis-understand the warning, Sabre. The warning does not deny Marathi as one of mumbai's 'native' language. it is merely asking editors not to place the name of the city in languages other than english at the beginning of the lead primarily because this is an english encyclopaedia. The decision was arrived at by consensus. I second Rudolf's statement. Trinidade 20:05, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

"Good bay" Portuguese etymology needs editing

The section on Etymology sounds a little schizophrenic:

This name possibly originated as the Old Portuguese phrase bom baim, meaning "good little bay." [...] A widespread popular etymology of Bombay holds that it was derived from a Portuguese name meaning "good bay". However...

These two paragraphs should be re-worded so that it sounds like a single voice, not two editors. — Sam 24.128.48.26 (talk) 21:19, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

The section needs more work than that - it starts off about Bombay, then talks about Mumbai, then comes back and talks about Bombay again. It was known as Bombay Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) during its establishment in 1975. So, I guess we may need to use it that way, even if it is known as Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) today. Xavier449 (talk) 08:23, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Major changes in Images

I have made some major changes related to Images. I have replaced all the sections with relevant images by digging up the Revision history. There were too. many irrelevant skyline images. Kindly let me know if anyone suggests any image changes. Xavier449 (talk) 09:34, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Please discuss adding   India instead of India in the infobox(The table in the beginning). This has the link to India as well as the flag of India. Thanks Raj Kumar 123abc (talk) 08:31, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit semi-protected}} template. There's dispute over whether flags should be used or not. Jackmcbarn (talk) 00:36, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

Please add a note on the introduction passage the Mumbai is also the "Financial Capital" of India VijayMandavilli (talk) 10:03, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Not done for now: A reliable source is required, as is an indication that the appellation is either official or in widespread usage. Rivertorch (talk) 04:05, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
Lead has "Mumbai is the commercial and entertainment capital of India". --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:14, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
Later in the article, a statement that it's the commercial capital is sourced to a piece that calls it the commercial capital and—wait for it—the financial capital (but not the entertainment capital). It appears to be an op-ed piece, and I'm not entirely sure it's a reliable source. I don't watch this article, but I'd suggest that any wording describing the city as a "—— capital" should either be well sourced or phrased in terms of "so-and-so has described Mumbai as . . ." (with so-and-so being notable, if not authoritative). Rivertorch (talk) 15:37, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

I was working on the page Heritage structures in Mumbai, and one of the areas of concern was that the page was an orphan. It could be linked to Mumbai#Architecture "Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee" on this page to help resolve this Eccomaggio (talk) 06:31, 27 October 2013 (UTC) Eccomaggio (talk) 06:31, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Partly done:. It would be slightly misleading to link to it from Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee, and they are not the same, so I've placed a see-also link at the top of that section. Thanks. --Stfg (talk) 11:28, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Poverty needs to be addressed

Mumbai comes off in this article almost like some shining jewel. Nearly half of its population is cripplingly poor and Dharavi is hardly mentioned at all. There should at least be some indication of how bad the worst parts of the city are. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.73.158.14 (talk) 02:50, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

Mumbai does not exist. Create article on Bombay. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.114.76.56 (talk) 11:56, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

anglicization

Was the objection to the name 'Bombay' by the local political party based on the Portuguese form of the name or the anglicization of the name ? The name of the large Egyptian city of Alexandria was given to the newly built city in the time of the early Ptolemies. Egyptians never used this name. They used the name of the small fishing village on or near which the Greek city was built. The name Alexandria has subsequently been arabized (not surprisingly). If the majority of the population were Christian and still spoke and wrote Coptic, one can only speculate whether there would be a move to have the place renamed 'Rakote' (Pamour (talk) 23:41, 21 January 2014 (UTC)).

Please change the 'Metropolitan City' below Mumbai to Megacity. Mumbai has been a mega city for a while now and its unethical not to change the description. Source:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megacity

Not done "Megacity" is not a common description, and there is no agreement on the definition of what constitutes one. It is not used in any of the WP articles on any of the 30 cities listed in the table in Megacities. The most common description is Metropolis, or Metropolitan Area (which is what we are using on Mumbai), although some, like National Capital Region (India) have very specific, legal descriptions. Arjayay (talk) 09:32, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

So exactly what differentiates a metropolis and metropolitan city? e.g. Kolkata is also a metropolitan city but is named metropolis.

It depends how the city describes itself - look at the articles for each of the cities in the Megacities list. The official description may be Metropolis of XXX or National Capital Region, but none describe themselves as the "mega city of YYY" - Arjayay (talk) 22:13, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Copyvio

These two sentences appear to be directly copy-pasted from Slate:

They argued that "Bombay" was a corrupted English version of "Mumbai" and an unwanted legacy of British colonial rule.[citation needed] The push to rename Bombay was part of a larger movement to strengthen Marathi identity in the Maharashtra region.

Would someone please reword and cite that source? I couldn't find a way to smoothly reword it... Jujutacular (talk) 23:55, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Did you want to reword -- that is, paraphrase -- the two sentences simply because they were "directly copy-pasted" from an on-line source? Or is there something specific about either sentence that does not sound right to you? If they are good material for this article, can't they be left as a direct quote?
I don't mind revising the sentences. I just want to hear from you first. I noticed that the subject of the first sentence, "They", is clearly the Shiv Sena party mentioned in the previous sentence, so it makes sense. The second sentence is a claim made by someone (the author of the on-line article?). It would be clearer if that person were mentioned in the sentence, or if a reference immediately followed the sentence. I am not good at adding sources, though. – CorinneSD (talk) 00:13, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Either way would be fine, I think. If it can be reworded smoothly with the surrounding text, or yeah a direct quote may work. Jujutacular (talk) 01:52, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
I just put it in quotes and added the cite; whatever you want to do, you should always immediately either delete the content or attribute it as a quotation. It is never okay to allow copyright violations to persist during discussions, the same way unsourced, controversial claims about living persons should be immediately removed. Thanks for bringing it up though. Agyle (talk) 11:40, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
