UK Airdates

Does anyone have the airdates for Seasons 1 & 2 in the UK? I thought since Season 3 aired in the UK before it aired in Canada, the series should show for both countries. 174.91.250.118 (talk) 06:18, 5 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Murder rate in the GTA in the 1890s?

edit

Does anyone know what the REAL murder rate would have been in the Greater Toronto Area in the 1890s? Since (as of Jan 2013), there are 68 episodes, I assume that also means 68 murders? seems like a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.147.17.197 (talk) 01:08, 26 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

If you think about it like that then there are an awful lot of murders in NYC, given how many cop dramas are set in that city. Also, the show is not set in the GTA but a portion of what now is the core of the city. If you want some light reading there is A DEPRESSING STORY? Georgina Reilly

edit

Am I missing something? Her character first appeared in the cast during the fifth season. That's not an issue. The question is when she was considered to be starring in the series. Her article supports that, but it's not referenced. She is displayed on the season five DVD cover. Netflix lists her in season 5 (use the drop down). The official Tumbler lists her in season five. Any suggestions? Walter Görlitz (talk) 04:58, 12 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Australian DVDs

edit

You'll see I put the release dates for seasons 6-8 in the DVD section but not Blu-ray. That's because I can't find any info that these DVDs were released on Blu-ray at the same time as the regular DVDs. If/when I find out for sure, I'll add dates. 74.58.164.84 (talk) 02:01, 3 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

DVDs - References

edit

Why does everyone feel the need to leave references for seasons 6 & 7 DVDs, which were released in the past two years, but not for seasons 1-5? Why do the Blu-Rays only have references for season 8 only?

What's so special about those two seasons that they require the references to be kept after all this time? Can anyone explain that to me? Not using dictionary words, that you're all so fond of....

I've tried to explain to all of you, but you don't seem to understand. I'll try another way. I'm following the patterns already set in place. Other past seasons on DVD and Blu-ray do not have references and it's not considered "blanketing", so why now? If it's because you need proof that these past seasons were released on these dates, isn't a little late now? There are plenty of websites to tell you this information, if you feel the need to look it up. Once they're been release on DVD, everyone knows and proof isn't really required. 70.26.214.175 (talk) 22:26, 8 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Not really everyone, just those of use who understand what having reliable sources actually means. You, a part of the group of everyone, clearly don't understand what it means to have reliable sources. There's nothing special about those two seasons other than the fact that they have references while the others don't. As a result, the content of the other seasons could be removed without any problem based on WP:V alone. The issue is not why do seasons 6 & 7 still need to have sources, but where did the sources for seasons 1 through 5 go? Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:22, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
References are always required for all information in Wikipedia regardless of whether the information is "past" or "future". If there are facts in the article that aren't properly referenced, that does not create a precedent that permits the removal of references from information that is properly referenced just because the date it's referencing has receded into the past — it militates the addition of references for the information that's missing them.
The problem is that because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that anyone can edit, it would be entirely possible for anybody, at absolutely any time, to change any DVD's release date to a wrong one — so if the existing date isn't supported by a RS, then we'd have no way to verify that their edit was wrong. (You may think nobody would ever actually do that — but trust me, you'd be shocked at how much time Wikipedia editors actually do have to spend cleaning up after people who inserted deliberately false information into Wikipedia for shits and giggles.) So references have to stay in the article forever, regardless of whether the information they're referencing is in the past or the future — the only way a reference can ever be stripped is if it dies completely, and even then the information doesn't get to stand unreferenced, but rather still has to be replaced with an alternate source that does still exist.
I will acknowledge that Wikipedia's rules about sourcing are a lot stricter today than they were when this article was first created; we've learned a lot of hard lessons over the years about what can happen if we don't insist on the references being carefully and properly and consistently cited in the article itself. So if there's some old information in the article that isn't adequately sourced, that means it still needs to have sources added to it — it does not mean that you're allowed to strip sources from the information that has been properly referenced, on the grounds that the unsourced stuff defines standard procedure. "Sourced" is the standard, and "unsourced" is the thing that needs to be changed to conform to the standard — not vice versa.
You're not following any established "patterns that are already set in place"; you're making up your own special rules that aren't consistent with Wikipedia's actual rules — and it needs to stop. Bearcat (talk) 01:09, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Great explanation. I rescued a number of references. Walter Görlitz (talk) 01:59, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Well Walt, someone's being a smart alec, putting references for all past seasons. It's not necessary, despite you saying/thinking so. 70.26.214.175 (talk) 18:08, 19 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

You are incorrect, despite you thinking otherwise, and a statement like the following is entirely fabricated and based on no normal Wikipedia editing practice: "Only current release dates need references. Dates from three months or two years ago don't need references." The strength of any article at Wikipedia is in its references. We wouldn't necessarily need a reference to support the title of a DVD that has already been released like "Murdoch Mysteries — Season One" because that can be directly observed when looking at the cover. We would, however, need references for a DVD title that hasn't been released yet, because Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. Release dates, however, should absolutely be supported with references just like air dates should, because we need this information to be verifiable. One cannot determine when a DVD was released simply by looking at the box. If you believe the statement you wrote above, I have to insist that you please not remove references again. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:29, 19 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
You don't get to unilaterally decide what is and isn't necessary in a Wikipedia article, 70. Wikipedia's rules do, and Wikipedia's rules require references for all content, period. Bearcat (talk) 20:39, 19 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Guest stars

edit

I certainly grant that this show has had some "guest star" appearances that were genuinely noteworthy — William Shatner as Walt Whitman Mark Twain, Stephen Harper doesn't recognize Wilfrid Laurier har de har, Allan Hawco Republic of Doyle crossover, etc. — but I question whether the article really warrants an WP:INDISCRIMINATE list of every actor who ever did a guest shot at all. This isn't a thing we do in other articles about scripted TV shows, and doing a one-off guest shot on Murdoch does not occupy some special sphere of notability greater than doing a one-off guest shot on The Big Bang Theory or How to Get Away With Murder or Mrs. Brown's Boys or Rookie Blue. Admittedly the show does have a bit of a stunt-casting fetish, so some guest appearances certainly do end up getting covered as actual news, but a comprehensive list of every working actor who ever appeared on the show at all is WP:UNDUE.

Accordingly, I would like to propose that the "guest stars" list be trimmed back to only those actors (or stunt-casted non-actor personalities like Mansbridge and Harper) whose appearances can be reliably sourced as notable for more than just the fact that they happened. Anybody whose appearance didn't generate a news story or three about the appearance, who's being added just because their name appears on IMDb or in the episode credits, should not be listed. Bearcat (talk) 21:31, 17 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

When the show was newer, and the article, and list, was smaller, it was OK to list everyone. I agree that it's too large now and we have to find a criteria to remove items from the overinflated list. RS is one. The importance of the actor's appearance should also be considered. Walter Görlitz (talk) 01:50, 18 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I agree. I don't really think a list is necessary in the first place, since this isn't IMDB. If there's a notable guest star it can be included with actual prose in a paragraph. But if the section is kept, only those with reliable sources should be included. FuriouslySerene (talk) 18:02, 2 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Great article. Just suggest update to reflect that Season 1-9 of Murdoch are now available on Acorn TV in the U.S. The source is my family as we just finished binge-watching Season 9. The current article states that only up to Season 8 is available on Acorn. Thanks

Simply suggest changing the following: From - In 2013, Acorn.tv began showing the first seven seasons on its online premium service and made Season 8 available in 2015.[36][37] to - In 2013, Acorn.tv began showing the first seven seasons on its online premium service, and has since added Season 8 in 2015 and Season 9 in 2016. Guest Stars

edit

Since someone decided guest stars are no longer needed in the main place of Murdoch, I decided to create a separate place for them. A compromise. Please feel free to add any upcoming guest stars for season 10. Mickeydee15 (talk) 21:46, 20 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

There's never any need for Wikipedia to maintain a complete list of every single actor who's ever done a "guest role" on a TV show. It's not done for any other show, and there's no reason why Murdoch Mysteries would be special in that regard. Bearcat (talk) 02:40, 21 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Then why was it created in the first place? Why delete after nine seasons? Mickeydee15 (talk) 21:50, 21 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

News flash: people like to fill Wikipedia articles with cruft that doesn't belong in a Wikipedia article. That doesn't mean it has to stay there forever. Why delete after nine seasons? Because the list was turning into a pile of non-notable WP:TRIVIA which needed to be made shorter rather than longer, that's why — and also, the list hasn't been present in the article for nine seasons, as it only started happening in 2011. Bearcat (talk) 21:51, 21 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Episodes Number 132 not138

edit

A mistake in "the list of episodes". Last episode of season 9 is numered 138 when te one before is 131. Need to be switched with the good number. Same for the 2 first of season 10, not 139 and 140 but 133 and 134. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ory26 (talkcontribs) 23:08, 9 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

2004/5 TV movies

edit

At the start of the 'History' section, we read:

'Murdoch Mysteries originally came to Canadian television in 2004 as a two-episode made-for-TV movie, starring Peter Outerbridge in the lead role. One episode was broadcast in 2004, and the other in 2005.'

However, the summary table of episodes shows 3 episodes (not 2) in 2004-5. On the basis of this, and of the article 'List of Murdoch Mysteries episodes', perhaps the text above should be changed to:

'Murdoch Mysteries originally came to Canadian television in 2004 as two made-for-TV movies, starring Peter Outerbridge in the lead role. A third TV movie was broadcast in 2005.'

Can those with a greater familiarity with this phase of the programme's history advise as to whether my suggestion is correct? A further problem is that the current sentence is keyed to reference 3; if the wording is changed as I have suggested, this citation may need to be dropped. Many thanks. Chronarch (talk) 10:39, 28 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I do know that there are three episodes in the original TV series, as they are on DVD and I have seen them, but it could be that the third was never aired. It should not be dropped and what needs to be investigated is where that third programme came from. Was it aired? Was it a pilot for the series? Walter Görlitz (talk) 18:41, 28 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks for your comments. According to the article 'List of Murdoch Mysteries episodes', the three TV movies were indeed all broadcast, on 13 May 2004, 12 September 2004 and 8 September 2005 respectively. The wording at the start of the current article's 'History' section thus still seems inexplicable, and is manifestly at variance both with the summary table of episodes here, and with the 'List of Murdoch Mysteries episodes' article. Chronarch (talk) 17:42, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Chronarch: feel free to be WP:BOLD and correct the wording here! Doing so with references would be the best option. Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:53, 30 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Under Anachronistic Technology

edit

Another charming theme of this show is Constable George Crabtree's ideas that had he followed through with some them, he would have gone on to be quite wealthy. Among these inventions are sliced bread, paint by number kits, microwave ovens for cooking potatoes, sportscasting with color commenting (play-by-play via telegraph of a football match from the UK), and the use of one-way mirrors in interrogation rooms. Should I add this to the synopsis section, or will it make that section too long? I've not done much editing of wikis. (fixed typos) LetaRogers (talk) 22:10, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

It would help if reliable sources could be added to address this aspect of the show, because without that you'd be running a high risk of tipping into original research. Bearcat (talk) 16:57, 5 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

There are several anachronisms in the show. Candlestick telephones were not manufactured until 1904 and would have taken at least a couple of years to be installed in the Toronto police stations, but are shown in the series as being in use before that. There is even a desk telephone with the mouthpiece and earpiece as one unit, like a modern telephone, which were not manufactured until the 1920's. In another show, a photograph was taken at night, from a distance, with only the light of a streetlight. Reference to anachronisms

edit

In the second paragraph of the Synopsis section, reference is made to the show's use of Murdoch's (and others') steampunk-like anticipations of future technologies with 'crude' prototypes. His supposed 'invention' of the telefax (facsimiles sent via telegraph) however, is perhaps not the best example to use, since these came into commercial use as early as 1865, some 30 years before the setting of the series (see Fax#History). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.202.210.107 (talk) 17:15, 10 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
