A railway connection Between Mysore and Mettupalyam is a important line Because it will be a connection for north and south it is a important line for the state it will also decrease the distance taken for going to Kerala so the Project should me started as early as possible. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.241.248.67 (talk) 14:35, 26 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mention about name Mysuru becoming official

edit

I believe, there needs to be a mention about official renaming of the city's name from Mysore to Mysuru. Right now, the article just says officially Mysuru in lead, and doesn't give any explanation later. We could take references used in Bangalore article I guess. Lead

edit

I think it would be appropriate to mention "Mysore is the third largest city in Karnataka in terms of population" in the first sentence rather than just saying "One of the largest cities in Karnataka". Here is the reference. Gnanapiti 17:32, 14 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

It is actually the second largest, I have added that info with citation. -- ¿Amar៛Talk to me/My edits 10:44, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nandi @ Chamundi betta

edit

I have a couple of images of Nandi. Can/Do we fit one of these somewhere in the article? The Nandi, I believe actually underwent an elaborate ritual cleaning process and I think it really looks fresh and new :)

Sarvagnya 05:48, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Awesome pictures! One of these can be easily incorporated into the article. Thanks Sarvagnya, for these pictures. - KNM Talk 06:13, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, taking a fresh look at the article now, it didn't appear that easy to put in a new image, as all the sections are already equipped with the relevant good images. Only possibility is to consider replacing Chamundi Hills image with one of these Nandi images. Any comments / thoughts? - KNM Talk 06:19, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
"...as all the sections are already equipped with the relevant good images..." - :) that's precisely why I started this discussion. Or I'd have pushed them into the article by now :) .. Actually replacing the Chamundi hills image is not a bad idea because that image really doesnt show anything distinctive.. it could be any hill. right? Also this Nandi is part of the Chamundi hill and then we have the race course pic which is the view from chamundi hill. So Chamundi hills is embedded into all these by default. Sarvagnya 08:54, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
The only replaceable photo according to me is the Chamundi temple one in the Demographics section. Personally, I would prefer Chamundi Hills pic to be there because it is a "geographical icon" of Mysore visible from almost anywhere in the city :) -- ¿Amar៛Talk to me/My edits 09:56, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
hmm.. you do have a point. Sarvagnya 10:13, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • This article may need to undergo summary style, where a series of appropriate subpages are used. For example, if the article is United States, then an appropriate subpage would be History of the United States, such that a summary of the subpage exists on the mother article, while the subpage goes into more detail.[?]

I read something about this, but I don't know anything about its reliablity. "Mahishūru" is itself sanskritization of "erumaiyoor" (in Tamil, எருமையூர், where எருமை means Buffalo). Buffalo (எருமை) is an honor given to primary warrior, who fought the battle bullish (Buffalo-ish) and won the battle for their side. A place (town) which has such a person is "erumaiyoor". --V4vijayakumar (talk) 14:07, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Congrats to all editors on making this featured article.--Bigsuperindia (talk) 01:39, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, a pretty good article. On the other hand: while this article might have qualified as featured three years ago, it has clearly not been maintained. There are whole paragraphs needing citation, all of its images need alt text, and it could probably use a thorough copyedit. If its current editors want to avoid having the article showing up at WP:FAR and possibly delisted, they might spend some time working on those things. Magic♪piano 13:51, 16 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sports section

edit

I had made an addition to the sports section [[1]] and it was reverted by User:Abhishek191288 saying that it was not discussed, there are enough reliable sources about the person. I don't know why the addition was reverted --sarvajna (talk) 14:48, 13 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I tend to agree with the revert; just because there exist reliable sources about a person, it doesn't necessarily mean that we should include it in the article. We should try and include only the most notable, or about people who have a close connection to the city. The thing is that if we include this, then that'll probably make way for inclusion of lesser known people, and there's this danger of it becoming an indiscriminate embedded list, something which we should try to avoid. Of course, my opinion is not set in stone, and I'm open to other views as well. Lynch7 15:26, 13 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Lynch for you comment :-), but if you look at the article, it mentions about Rahul Ganapathy, a national amateur golf champion while Kashyap is the youngest Indian to officiate at the Wimbledon also he is a former ITF player, Kashyap is from Mysore(Gokulam is an area in Mysore) and has also studied in Mysore, so I feel he is enough notable and has also close connection with the city. I agree that there would be enough reliable sources about lot of people from Mysore but don't you think a former under 18 ITF player who became youngest Indian to officiate at Wimbledon is not notable enough to find mention in the article? Thanks --sarvajna (talk) 15:47, 13 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

GOCE copy edit, 7 June 2012

edit

I copied the article today and have the following comments on it:

  • Sports section: I deleted the mention of the Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf Club, which I believe to be merely promotional. (The reference was to an expired domain, by the way). --Stfg (talk) 16:07, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • The article was inconsistent as to the use or otherwise of serial commas (aka Harvard) commas. More often they were omitted, so I've removed those that were there, except where clarity would have been lost.
  • A couple of Americanisms had crept in. I've tagged with {{Use Indian English}}. --Stfg (talk) 16:52, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

The first paragraph of the Media section isn't good, because it looks like a collection of half-completed lists:

  • ... other weekly newspapers, such as ...
  • He started news magazines such as ...
  • Popular newspapers include ...
  • ... and other local newspapers ...

These expressions leave the reader with the impression that you have in mind an oncomplete list of things you're eager to mention, but, lacking a framework for this, they have just been dumped any old how. The reader is left wondering which if any of them are really notable, and whether there are others just as notable. One way to solve this would be to rewrite the paragrah as follows:

Newspaper publishing in Mysore started in 1859 when Bhashyam Bhashyacharya began publishing a weekly newspaper in Kannada called the Mysooru Vrittanta Bodhini, the first of a number of weekly newspapers published in the following three decades.[85] A well-known Mysore publisher during Wodeyar rule was M. Venkatakrishnaiah, known as the father of Kannada journalism, who started several news magazines.[86] Many local newspapers are published in Mysore and carry news mostly related to the city and its surroundings.[87] Sudharma, the only Indian daily newspaper in Sanskrit, is published in Mysore.[88]

Note that this completely deletes the sentence:"Popular newspapers include Times of India, The Hindu and Deccan Herald in English, and Prajavani and Vijaya Karnataka in Kannada, since none of those are published in Mysore (one is in Delhi, one in Chennai, and the rest in Bangalore).

The Tourism section has the same problem: it reads like a non-comprehensive list of one-line adverts. --Stfg (talk) 16:52, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

That problem seems tro be common in "Tourism" sections, even in FAs, and I can't see a good way to solve it at present, som am withdrawing the comment. May ask the FA crew for guidance some time. --Stfg (talk) 10:10, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation

edit

The sound file seems to stress the second syllable, but the IPA pronunciation guide indicates that stress should be on the first syllable. Which is correct? 129.105.28.71 (talk) 01:52, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Just noticed that both Merriam-Webster and the OED indicate that stress should be on the second syllable. Given that evidence and the audio file, I'm going to assume that the Wikipedia page needs to be changed.

Mysuru retains No.1 Ranking

edit

Mysuru city retained the top position in Swachh Bharat Rankings for 2015 that were release by the Ministry of Urban Development. In a year long survey, the researchers studied 476 first tier cities with two parameters; one, how 'minimal' open defecation was in the city; two, how robust the municipalities were with solid waste management system. Mysuru was found impressive on the both the counts[1]

what is wrong in this??? why people are interested in taking away the No.1 ranking???

Restoring reverted edits

edit

My recent edit to this page was reverted as it appeared to the editor to be WP:ADVOCACY of a particular point of view, specifically waste management in Indian cities or by Indian municipalities. I am relatively new to Wikipedia and see myself as a steward for water, sanitation and solid waste management related content on the site. These are the issues that I intend to write about in a neutral, balanced and informative manner. On reading my edits to the Mysore page you will find that all of the content is verifiable i.e. it is sourced from reliable and published sources. My writing style, in my opinion, is (1) fact based, (2) neutral in tone without any puffery, contentious labels or unsupported attributions and (3) balanced i.e. holistic and not highlighting fringe views. I do not regard my edits as WP:ADVOCACY and would like to restore the content.

Nearest International Airport

edit

The nearest international airport is not Kannaur, as the article states, but Bengaluru's Kempegouda International Airport, which lies at a distance of 148.58km from Mysore. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8388:541:E300:80D4:4BBA:1BF5:EA2A (talk) 23:13, 14 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

WP:FAR

edit

This article was promoted to FA many years ago. Since then the FA criteria have become more clearly defined and in my humble opinion this article is no longer worthy of the FA star. My main concern is the lack of citations and the ones used are a little dated. Can we resolve these issues and avoid an FA review? Graham Beards (talk) 23:43, 23 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Mysore at present is definitely not a Featured Article. It lacks inline citations, does not adhere to neutral point of view, it's cluttered with too many and unnecessary images, etc. The copyediting and prose is of very poor quality for an FA. There are laundry lists in multiple places. Economy section lacks suitable numbers etc.
This is just a sample. I personally feel that Mysore is not even a Good Article at present. Then how can it be a Featured Article?
Mysore should be delisted from Wikipedia's Featured Articles as soon as possible.

Delist — I am from Mysore, and I fully agree with the other anonymous IP editor. Mysore should be de-listed from FA as soon as possible. At present, the article isn't of FA quality and there are too many things to discuss and change, in either this talk page or at WP:FAR. In fact, there are other B-class or GA-class articles that are far better than Mysore article. 106.216.180.44 (talk) 06:17, 19 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

For 1 and 2, why do you need more citations when there is a dedicated article for each? Trintrin pbs is a UN sponsored government project aimed to reduce global warming and climate change by encouraging bicycles. It’s very much notable. Also first city in the state to have it. Checked Google Books, got 74 million hits for "Mysore" and 123K hits for "Mysuru". - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 19:51, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. Exclusively referred to as Mysore in reliable English sources as far as I've seen. estar8806 (talk) 19:43, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oppose.
  1. WP:TOOSOON In the interest of providing some context to the general reader, this request is a result of governments renaming places in India since the country's independence. In my opinion, for this article to be moved to Mysuru, sufficient time is necessary for the literature to adopt the spelling and for it to satisfy Wikipedia's naming guidelines. At present, it may be too early, and the most relevant article is of the nearby Bangalore and a similar discussion on its rejected move request.
  2. Mysuru is merely the official spelling recently adopted by two governments (those of Karnataka and India), just as Mahishuru was the official spelling during the Kingdom of Mysore, but the maharajas did not go about respelling it. In addition, contrary to what is stated in this request, Mysuru is not the original name (or spelling) of the city either; it is merely the contemporary vernacular variant (its etymology briefly but clearly outlines the evolution of the city's name). The earliest attestations of the city's name in the English language is Mysore. This request, therefore, does not yet warrant the renaming (WP:TRANSLITERATE)
  3. WP:COMMONNAME As noted by @Estar8806 and @Fylindfotberserk, Wikipedia guidelines suggest using the commonly used name/variant. In addition to the fact that Mysore is and has been the commonly used spelling, and adding to @Fylindfotberserk's point, Turkey is preferred to the official Türkiye; Argentina to the official Argentine; and the list goes on.
  4. Given the fact that Mysuru is only a government adoption, many counterexamples could be cherry-picked and produced where news journals still use/alternate between the common spelling Mysore (what better than Star of Mysore's article, for example) and Mysuru.
