Barred or unbarred?

edit

I don't know too much about galaxies, but this article on barred spiral galaxies states that this galaxy is barred. - Ncoady

The page Barred spiral galaxy says that NGC 4565 is barred, but this page says it's unbarred. Which is correct? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.3.160.252 (talk) 16:24, 28 March 2007 (UTC).Reply

I have corrected the issue. NGC 4565 is unbarred (type is SA) per NED. WilliamKF 01:03, 4 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
NED now lists this galaxy's morphology as "SA(s)b? edge-on". Given the "?" here, I think we should just remove the "unbarred" from the initial sentence, but probably not insert "barred" in its place, as this indicates the galaxy's morphology is still in question. --76.113.200.14 (talk) 08:21, 17 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Explanation about the image...

edit

May I ask why it is that the said galaxy appears to be smaller and (obviously) much thinner than the usual disk galaxy? -Pika ten10 (talk) 09:26, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Distance

edit

How far away is this galaxy? The article says 53 million LY, but other sources say it's about 30 or 31 million LY. http://seds.lpl.arizona.edu/messier/Xtra/ngc/n4565.html http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap040409.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.61.49.221 (talk) 12:30, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Weasel Words

edit

I've removed the 'weasel words warning' the words in question simply explain the uncertainty about the spiral nature of the galaxy based on terrestrial observations before it was confirmed by the Spitzer Space telescope. Stub Mandrel (talk) 21:37, 6 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Needle Galaxy 4565.jpeg will be appearing as picture of the day on April 7, 2014. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2014-04-07. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. Thanks! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:54, 19 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

NGC 4565 (also known as the Needle Galaxy) is an edge-on spiral galaxy about 30 to 50 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. NGC 4565 is a giant spiral galaxy more luminous than the Andromeda Galaxy, and has a population of roughly 240 globular clusters, more than the Milky Way.Photograph: Ken Crawford
