Congratulation! - Rohan de Saram - unbelievable story --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:16, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
Today I remember an organist who was pictured on the Main page on his birthday ten years ago, and I found two recent organ concerts to match, - see top of my talk --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:46, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, I think I may have seen this one before. The photo appears familiar. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 19:56, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
- I worked with Vami_IV on his church's article then. - Today, I made Leif Segerstam my big story. -Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:59, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- Nice. That's an excellent photograph — Chris Woodrich (talk) 10:05, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- That's a great honour coming from you! - I hope to get to your FAC. - My story today is a cantata 300 years old, based on a hymn 200 years old when the cantata was composed, based on a psalm some thousand years old, - so said the 2015 DYK hook. I had forgotten the discussion on the talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:23, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
- I hope you followed to a rich day. Today a caricature, for a change. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:34, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

- Thank you, Gerda Arendt. I think I'll share a picture as well, shake it up. Not classical, but a bit of sisterly support - all three of the bands I saw yesterday were headlined by women, and one had only women as members: The Warning, Halestorm, and Evanescence. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 16:41, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- That's lovely and considerate, - thank you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:47, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Happy whatever you celebrate today, - more who died, more to come, and they made the world richer. Greetings from Madrid where I took the pic of assorted Cucurbita in 2016. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:01, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Those are some gorgeous gourds. Today will be a karaoke night... I may sing "Thriller" like a certain famous Michael, or I may pull out the classic "Monster Mash" — Chris Woodrich (talk) 16:04, 31 October 2024 (UTC) (Update: did both, as well as "Devil Went Down to Georgia"03:30, 1 November 2024 (UTC))

Romanization of Gao Qifeng
editHello @Crisco 1492–thank you so much for creating Gao Qifeng and bringing it to DYK. I am wondering if you would like to include some alternative romanizations of his name, Ko Kei-Fung (in Cantonese) and Kao Ch'i-Feng (in Mandarin)? The subject lived before the PRC and his contemporaries would not refer to him using the Pinyin system.
The romanization "Ko Kei-Fung" can be seen here on a 1940 magazine cover. "Kao Ch'i-Feng" can be seen here on An Index to Reproductions of Paintings by Twentieth-Century Chinese Artists (1998), listed under "Kao Weng", his birth name. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 21:11, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi The Lonely Pather. The article has the Wade transcription (for Mandarin) in the infobox (the Liangyou article also used C.F. Kao). I was getting Gou Kei-fung for the Yale romanization - what system would Ko Kei-Fung be under? — Chris Woodrich (talk) 14:13, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Chris-- thanks for pointing out the Wade transcription, which I missed. The "K" in Ko implies that it is Hong Kong Government Cantonese Romanisation, by comparing it with the List of common Chinese surnames. Hope this helps! Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 17:37, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, yes. That'll definitely do it - I remember that Hokkien transcriptions are also very varied, with regional differences (Compare Tay and The in SE Asia). Let me play with {{Infobox Chinese}} and see if that can be accommodated. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 17:40, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Done. I believe I did it correctly, without the intonation. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 17:47, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Yang Pao'an
editOn 1 November 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Yang Pao'an, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Yang Pao'an refused to forsake the Chinese Communist Party, reportedly even after a telephone call with Chiang Kai-shek? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Yang Pao-an. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Yang Pao'an), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Re: Ye Gongchuo
editWow, incredible job with this article. I think I'm slightly jealous of your skills. Anyway, is there a reason you only make passing mention of his collaboration with Tagore? Is it hard to find more info? I only ask as that would make a great hook if we knew some other details. Viriditas (talk) 21:38, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- I didn't see much in the sources, unfortunately. I can see if there's more discussion elsewhere. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 21:43, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- No worries, don't bother. I thought I would ask. In terms of the review, I take it you prefer ALT0 as a hook? Viriditas (talk) 21:46, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- I forgot to mention, I also found the dynamic between his diverse political allegiances to be most interesting, and the implicit foreshadowing of the threat he faced from the later regime almost stands out in the text. It's too bad that can't be used as a hook, but it would be difficult to construct it, I suspect. Viriditas (talk) 21:49, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- All of them work, but ALT0 may be the most generally interesting. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 21:55, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- Got it. Viriditas (talk) 21:56, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- All of them work, but ALT0 may be the most generally interesting. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 21:55, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hey, do you do halftone restoration at all? Your lead slot image for Ye Gongchuo could be greatly improved using a separate image that uses a blur and sharpen filter. Apparently, the problem arose during the initial scan, where you can limit the dots from the halftone. Viriditas (talk) 22:14, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- I've done FFT before, but I'm not always satisfied with the results. I can fiddle with it once I'm done touching up "It's Okay, I'm Okay" with the new source. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 22:15, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- Alright, done. It doesn't look too bad at low resolutions. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 22:24, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for another good one! - For a surprise, a Bach cantata is on the Main page today, where it was last year for the 300th anniversary, and they were too lazy to find something new ;) - Look at my story, and listen to the 3 whole-tone steps and the dialogues of Fear and Hope. - An open letter open to be signed (more info on the talk), - I haven't checked if you did, please ignore then. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:11, 7 November 2024 (UTC)

editHello. As the nominator I have withdrawn my nomination of the aforementioned AFD which you have relisted. Unlike the other tennis articles I've listed for AFD this one has at least been partially improved and I've lost the will to bother trying to tidy up the Wikipedia tennis pages which are filled with nonsense. Sorry to rant. No criticism of you is meant. Best wishes . Shrug02 (talk) 01:26, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- Alright, Shrug02, no worries. I've closed the nomination as withdrawn. Thank you for keeping an eye out for potentially non-notable subjects. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:29, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. I won't be keeping an eye out anymore. Another closer has just relisted an AFD which has had no additions made to it in 7 days, has no references and has 4 people to 1 saying delete. I'm totally disheartened with the entire process and Wikipedia in general. It seems like a high school clique and I'm far too old for it. Again thanks and all the best. Shrug02 (talk) 01:33, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- No worries... I know that feeling. One reason why I've been focusing on content creation since coming out of retirement... a lot simpler to just be there with your sources. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:35, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- I have done lots of content creation but stopped making new pages when ones with dozens of sources were successfully AFD nominated because a group of people piled on with delete votes. I then switched to improving existing articles. I found a few that were impossible to improve so AFD nominated them, just to find that the powers that be keep them because I haven't got a bunch of people to pile on and those who agree these articles should be deleted are overruled by the admins. Anyway sorry to vent to a stranger. Think I'm going to find a new hobby. Shrug02 (talk) 01:41, 9 November 2024 (UTC)

Chen Dingshan–Thank you!
editHello @Crisco 1492,
Thank you for writing the amazing article about the amazing Chen Dingshan. I took liberty to put a bit more information, including his education, wives(?!), kid, travel, jail(?!), and re-organized the narrative of his early life into a chronological manner. I also hold the opinion that 飯店 would mean "restaurant", not "hotel", in 1930s China, but I could be wrong and I am more than happy to discuss with you about that. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 20:42, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- And in case you want to reference your previous text, I've made a copy of the article before my edits at User:TheLonelyPather/sandbox2. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 20:58, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- That's excellent, TheLonelyPather! I'll make sure to add you as co-author on the DYK nom... I didn't think to look for articles on his sister, and I'm always happy to have more biographical data. As for the translation, I defer to you entirely, as I work primarily through Google when writing articles on Chinese subjects, and between sources using current language and Google not providing historical context, it's easy to miss things like that where the meaning has shifted. 03:26, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, you reviewed. That could get awkward if I added you. Nix that. But either way, thank you! — Chris Woodrich (talk) 03:27, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- You're most welcome. Now that we've got the older brother and the sister of the family, we might think about the younger brother Chen Cidie, the father Chen Diexian, and the mother Zhu Su ... I will be available by Christmas time. Looking forward to potential future collaborations with you! Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 03:56, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- I haven't looked into the others in the family much, but just based on the Lear source, there is certainly enough for Chen Diexian! I love seeing all of the work you do on China-related articles! I've felt a little alone in the subject area and seeing someone else hard at work improving content in this field (especially in regards to late Qing and Republican stuff, my specialty) makes me so happy to see. - Thanks, Generalissima! A lot of my previous work was on early-20th century Chinese Indonesians (Kwee Tek Hoay, Lie Kim Hok, and the domestic film industry), so it's been very interesting to look into the contemporary situation in China! — Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:46, 13 November 2024 (UTC)

Jaws is an American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley. Released on June 20, 1975, it stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, who, with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw), hunts a man-eating great white shark that attacks beachgoers at a summer resort town. Regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster and won several awards for its music and editing. It was the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars two years later; both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which pursues high box-office returns from action and adventure films with simple high-concept premises, released during the summer in thousands of theaters and advertised heavily.
