"and other Shinto traditions?"
I don't have a source to back it up, but it was explained to me that cremation is a Buddhist thing, and the traditional Shinto thing is to roll the body up in a barrel-like thing for burial—this is rare today, though. Apparently cremation did not become common until the 20th century, although if you told that to the average Japanese they'd be surprised. Today, people tend to follow Buddhist rites for death-related things (funerals, family tombstone visits, etc) and Shinto for life-related things (celebrating a birth, shrine visits at New Year's)—even though most Japanese are not particularly religious (if at all). It's all very confusing, and your average Japanese is not very helpful in explaining it. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 09:07, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
- Hence why the text is hidden. :D The two paragraphs were just to have a general overview which we can source. We don't need to go too in-detail, but this is all important for the average reader. I had never heard of kegare before, that's for sure. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:09, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
- Y'learn something new all the time—I'd thought kegare was just a less-common synonym for yogore or kitanai (two words for "dirty" written with the same Chinese character as kegare). The skipping of the New Year's postcords was always explained to me as "medetaku nai kara" (roughly "because there's nothing to feel happy about (celebrate?)"—the dictionary gives "because it's inauspicious", but it's not anything as pompous-sounding a thing to say as that). My experience is that few Japanese have much depth of knowledge of their own traditions, even everyday ones. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 10:50, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
- Which wouldn't surprise me at all (we probably have just as good of an understanding about Canadian traditions). My wife cracked up when I told her that KFC was traditional Japanese Christmas food, BTW (there's a scene where the the main character, his boss, and his coworker eat fried chicken together at Christmas; luckily no Colonel). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:58, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
- Ha! They even dress the Colonel up as Santa Claus. They actually do serve turkey at KFC at Christmas (at least some years), but it's only smoked turkey legs (tastes like ham...blecch)
wp.ja says that the original author was opposed to the adaptation (didn't like the script), and told the director to make a different work about the subject instead. I've been looking for the source of the quote, but it looks like evey blog in Japan has decided to quote wp.ja on it. That's assuming the original quote was ever online. The article also claims there was a comic adaptation. There's a dead link that gives box office revenues of ¥6.46 billion. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 11:12, 22 May 2014 (UTC) - And there's the comic adaptation. Just gotta find a proper source. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 11:13, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Harta Berdarah
The article Harta Berdarah you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Harta Berdarah for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Zanimum -- Zanimum (talk) 13:01, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
Hey, do you think I can borrow you for the last section (History) here? User:Guy Macon has been reviewing a lot of the content, but I noticed on his Talk page that he's sick and I don't want to bother him. You'll see the content is very positive and includes an unusual number of awards and whatnot, but I am just following the sources, I swear! After that all that's left is the Lead and I should be able to nominate it for GA. The GA reviewer will of course point out how promotional it is, and I expect to go through "that" song and dance again ;-)
BTW - I am also asking around (maybe forum shopping, I suppose) for editors to participate on the James T. Butts, Jr. page (see BLPN discussion here. I bring it up because, from my perspective, the BLP issues on the page are severe enough to warrant some degree of urgency. CorporateM (Talk) 01:35, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- Ugh, the Butts article is a mess. Did you see those "a source", several sources? Ugh. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:55, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- Take a look at the sources... CorporateM (Talk) 03:14, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- I'm doing that. I'm trying to actually give proper attribution, which is necessary for NPOV. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:16, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- I meant because the sources are mostly op-eds and primary sources. There seems to be a general consensus that my version is basically better and more in-line with the direction the article needs to head, however without bold editing on an article where editors have strong opinions, it could take quite a while to get a strong version in place, whereas I feel severe BLP issues like this should be handled with some degree of urgency. Cropping Kelpie
Hi Crisco, I've been trying to crop this old piece of artwork using the Commons tool. I'm trying to get rid of the white space/text and whenever I try it, the tool is cutting the image off below her feet despite having the selection correct. Can you tell me why that's happening and what I'm doing wrong, please? SagaciousPhil - Chat 12:35, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- Commons tool? I'm unfamiliar with that. I usually download and crop in my own software. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:38, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- I mean this thing - it's very basic (although Hafs has had problems getting it to work!) SagaciousPhil - Chat 12:46, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- I have no idea how that thing works. If you want, I can crop this and upload it for you. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:49, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- That would be brilliant, if you wouldn't mind [now I'll admit I was rather hoping you would say that!]. SagaciousPhil - Chat 12:58, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Featured pictures
Hi Crisco, as you suggested, I've had a look at Wikipedia:Featured pictures/Places/Architecture. What do you think of this photo? Obviously, it hasn't got the right license just yet, but the photographer may quite like the prospect of his picture entering this process. Schwede66 19:13, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- That's quite nice, and almost there, but I think the crop is what sinks it. A bit more to either side (say, via a panorama) would have helped considerably. Then, people might disagree with me. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:50, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, I'm getting there. I agree about the crop. Schwede66 07:53, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Did you wanted me to change file or source? Hafspajen (talk) 01:48, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- The file you've nominated needs its source fixed. If you want to push on with the current nomination, that's fine. But I'd consider nominating the other as an ALT. (I can crop it if need be). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:49, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- Problem with sources? Atch. I just picked it from the article... I don't care about which file, I just care about the picture. Why can't I simply change the file? Hafspajen (talk) 01:55, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- You can do that too. The source of the image needs to be clear to ensure its copyright is okay (more of a technicality than anything with this painting, but it's better to be safe). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:57, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- Now there is a slight problem. The other file is used in like 50 articles, (counting other wikis too) this one File:Jan Vermeer - The Art of Painting - Google Art Project.jpg, is conected to 1 talk page... I think we can post this one as a safeguard, but if that technicallity can be fixed, that would be a blessing. Hafspajen (talk) 02:01, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- You can just nominate it as an ALT and, if it passes, we will replace the one that is currently in usage. Don't worry about that. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:03, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- How? Do I have to put in a double picture? It is messy. Hafspajen (talk) 02:05, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- I can do this one as an example, if you want. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:15, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- OK. But I have to have the original left there because that is the one used, not the google one . Is it difficult to fix the source ?Hafspajen (talk) 02:31, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- You'd have to find the source first. That may be difficult. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:03, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- Where shall I find that one? Hafspajen (talk) 12:24, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- If I knew, I'd have done it for you. You will probably have to ask the uploader — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:34, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- Where shall I find that one? Hafspajen (talk) 12:24, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- Asked the uploader. Ooops. Is it possible to upload fast this one? I imagine it would go under the same permission... Hafspajen (talk) 13:23, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- Are the colors accurate? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:33, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- What - which one of them? The Jan Vermeer's ? I don't know, never seen the original. In Amsterdam I went to see Van Googh and Rembrandt... balmer. Hafspajen (talk) 14:41, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- The other one? No, I don't think so, actually. Only the moon, one can se that it is just as much above than below. No, colours are no good. Hafspajen (talk) 14:50, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
Do you think this is a good way to display a book cover, or would I be better off showing just the front? Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:15, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- You mean with both the spine and the cover? I personally don't like it, but there is certainly precedent for it. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:29, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Have you ever seen this film? About how the Japanese Army heroically saved Indonesia from Western oppression during World War II? - I'll revert. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:13, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi Crisco. I am not incredibly active at the moment, but I was looking at that article and what was going on. I would suggest it's very bad practice to block someone for edit warring when you are are the last one she reverted, and part of the content dispute. I think it is probably a good idea to undo your actions and ask for an independent administrator to review. Dominic·t 06:38, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- The editor has already asked for a review of the block, which has the same effect. Allowing her to stay blocked for the x-teen minutes it'll take for this block to be reviewed (based on the comments below, this is already being looked into) will prevent further possible disruptions and keep her block log cleaner. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:50, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- I also note the "straightforward cases" clause at WP:INVOLVED: 5RR is fairly straightforward, even if I am considered involved (I don't, as I don't have much of an opinion on the issue either way, but I recognize that others may differ). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:51, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- I think that is a misreading. "straightforward cases" means that you won't get in trouble for reverting acts of vandalism at the same time you block a vandal (or ban evasion or similar). That is, there is no dispute in these cases. But the very top of that page, even in the nutshell, says that administrators "must never use them to gain an advantage in a dispute in which they are involved". Once you reverted and expressed an opinion on the content, this became no longer straightforward, because your action served to give the upper hand to the side of the debate which you expressed support for. Dominic·t 07:11, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- She was at 5RR and had reverted 3 editors within 24 hours. The policy violation is straightforward, and the clause in WP:INVOLVED uses vandalism as an example - not as a prescription. The prescription, in so far as that paragraph gives one, is reverts on "the basis that any reasonable administrator would have probably come to the same conclusion"; would you have blocked an individual at 5RR, who clearly continued edit warring despite two warnings on her talk page? Would "any reasonable administrator ... probably have" done so (not saying Doug is unreasonable, for the record)? Although it is "best practice" to report at a noticeboard, "best practice" does not mean "you are 100% required to do this". Blocking her immediately prevented further disruptions and allowed dialogue to be opened, which protected the high-profile article. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:43, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Your 3RR close just now
The edit-warring was about Category:Violence against men in North America, a category that with the removal of this page has only 2 entries and no definition of what articles should be in this category, and I can see BLP issues arising both with the category and its addition to this page. Apparently the perpetrator of this killing has written about his hatred of women, but not of men, which would justify the Category:Violence against women in the United States category (although I'd still like to see a definition for this one also). Adding the violence against men category appears to be stating that the perpetrator was acting because of his hatred of men (as well), and that doesn't seem to be justified - thus a BLP violation. I was about to close as no violation. I certainly can't see this as blockable. Dougweller (talk) 06:41, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- There's five reverts, which is already well past WP:3RR, and The BLP aspects are not prominent enough, IMHO, to meet the exception in WP:EW (although after your comment here I think you are probably correct that the category is not warranted). That you agree with the individual doing the reverting does not mean an exception should be made (per WP:EW: "Note that an editor who repeatedly restores his or her preferred version is edit warring, whether or not the edits were justifiable: it is no defense to say 'but my edits were right, so it wasn't edit warring'."), especially since multiple editors have asserted that having the category may be justifiable. If anything, this should have been brought to the talk page after the first revert. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:48, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- A minor point: taking action =/= closure. Discussion is still open, in case (say) an individual wishes to dispute the action, or wishes to look into other editors' actions. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:53, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Crisco, you were an involved editor, you should have restricted yourself to comments. Dougweller (talk) 07:20, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- I've raised the unblock request at AN as Dominic also felt a review was necessary - I've raised it as a request to look at Sceptre's unblock request and made it explicit that I am not asking for any action against anyone. Ww all make mistakes - I think you were too hasty and should have left this for someone else. Dougweller (talk) 07:41, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- I do not consider reverting violations of policy being involved. If I were to do so, then I would have to ask another admin to block somebody who, say, spends an hour vandalizing articles and refuses to stop (not that Spectre was vandalizing, but 3RR violation was out of policy). Had this been an issue which I had feelings regarding, there could have been WP:INVOLVED issues, or if this had been a content dispute with neither party violating policy. I warned her, reverted her violation of 3RR, and blocked her when she reverted that and went to 5RR. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:37, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Crisco, the fact that Sceptre was breaking 3RR does not change the fact that the edits were expressions of a legitimate content disagreement, and that you took a stance in the content dispute while at the same time taking administrative action. That is the textbook example of being "involved". Fut.Perf. ☼ 10:05, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Had Dan been the one over 3RR I'd have done the same. Now, Fut.Perf., are you saying that you would have not blocked if I had asked you to do so? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:08, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- And as for "taking a stance", check out my stance here (posted after the block). My stance is decidedly not pro-category. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:10, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Maybe I would have blocked; I haven't looked into the behaviour of all parties so far. But then, unlike you, I clearly am uninvolved in this issue; this is the whole point in keeping content corrections and administrative actions separate, isn't it? As for your taking a stance on the content issue, what I was seeing was this [1] edit, in which you clearly did so; that you later opened a discussion about it on the talkpage is evidence of a laudable attitude as an editor, but it still doesn't change the fact that you ought not to be handing out blocks on participants in this disagreement at the same time. Fut.Perf. ☼ 10:14, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- My point was a reference to the last paragraph in WP:INVOLVED. That being said, as it appears consensus is that I was involved, I will unblock Scepter and ask her to participate in the talk page discussion. If she edit wars further I will not touch it. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:39, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

- Doug, Writing about hate of women while highly disturbing is not in it's self an act of violence. The shooter did commit acts of violence but he spared no one based on gender in fact I understand he started by stabbing to death three men. As for the new category (violence against men) it is new and has to be given time to grow. --Slenderdan (talk) 06:51, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- And using it at George Stinney because he was wrongfully executed is wrong. The parent category says "Articles on the topic of gender-based violence against men or boys" and I have added it to this category. Dougweller (talk) 07:18, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
That was very kind
Thanks for the closure there. I hope that means you have no hard feelings over my comments about your block. I'm actually a lot more concerned about the BLP issue than anything else, by the way. Dougweller (talk) 10:30, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Peer Review
Hi Crisco. Would you mind giving Ford Island a peer review before I send it off to FAC? I believe I've done all I can do for the article. I've searched every avenue I can think of to build a more comprehensive article. Thanks.--v/r - TP 20:17, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- Now that's a topic we haven't had much at FAC about. Sure. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:49, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you, I appreciate it. This will be my first FAC and I'm not terribly good at writing. A review would be great before I go there. I'd hate to fall victim to one of the quick-fail reasons.--v/r - TP 01:14, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

- I don't know anyone else, no. User:Mark Miller and User:Mareklug helped me write it, but I don't know anyone else who'd be interested in the topic. (edit conflict) I'll do that now.--v/r - TP 02:00, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Prep/Queue promotion?
Crisco, I've got about five minutes of Wi-fi left, so even though I've left a note at WT:DYK, I thought I'd mention that the next set is scheduled to be promoted to the main page in just under half an hour, but that requires a prep to queue promotion first. If you're still around and can do it, that would be great. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:57, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Tan Boen Soan
On 27 May 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tan Boen Soan, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Tan Boen Soan worked on the railway before becoming a film producer, novelist, and journalist? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tan Boen Soan. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
National Hero of Indonesia
One question: I don't see that the award is presented in a specific category as such. But then why is the Template:National Heroes of Indonesia divided in categories like Political, Military, Resistance, Arts, etc. but no such division is seen in the list at National Hero of Indonesia? §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 12:44, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

I can't find your source for the In Memoriam A.H.H. being Somersby Rectory. I'm a little wary of how it's framed at the moment: the poem's point is that the garden a metaphor, it's not that he didn't love the garden at the rectory, it's that he has to abandon it because of its melancholy association with his dead friend, and he goes on to imagine another child growing to love it:
- Till from the garden and the wild
- A fresh association blow,
- And year by year the landscape grow
- Familiar to the stranger's child;
Perhaps something like "described the gardens he remembered from his youth, now that he had left" would be better? Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:45, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Some is in the Somersby article here, some is in Christopher Ricks's Tennyson (page 139). I'll add this to the In Memoriam article, of course. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:58, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
'Me in the news'
Hi Crisco, just to note that in your 'Me in the news' section, the last link on the list was blocked by my antivirus software as 'Maladvertisment Website Redirect'. Thanks, Matty.007 13:23, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- The archive or the KR website? AVG is not picking anything up. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:31, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- I think it was the actual link rather than the archive, Norton 360 gave me an alert on it. No idea what ie means though I'm afraid. Thanks, Matty.007 13:34, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- That's odd. AVG is giving me absolutely nothing. I'll look further. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:37, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Nothing here. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:38, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

- Hmmm... I'll remove that link for now. The archive has no issues? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:45, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- I don't know I'm afraid. I don't massively want to take a risk of infecting my computer...imagine all the lost WP hours! Anyway, sorry for any trouble. Thanks, Matty.007 13:47, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

DYK redux
Crisco, thanks for taking on those review requests I made, and I'm very sorry about the mess with EEng that resulted from you doing me this favor. He isn't happy with me either now that I've replied, but you took the brunt. I've noticed that Tony has done some work after your comment on Template:Did you know nominations/The Flick, and I was still hoping you could take on Template:Did you know nominations/I Got U, which had a Drmies question. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:55, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- I'll try and revisit The Flick. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:30, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for The Flick; as you saw, I did make a minor correction, and will probably have to do a bit more work on the prose elsewhere. I guess I'll try to see whether someone else is interesting in taking on I Got U; I wasn't sure about the attribution issue Drmies raised with the hook. Elsewhere, Template:Did you know nominations/Incidents of Necrophilia was approved today; did you want to take a quick look? (It's by the Kidnapping author.) BlueMoonset (talk) 17:50, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

FYI and FWIW, I've started Snoring Rail zzzz and I now have the book The Snoring Bird zzzzzz. I wouldn't bother going to look for this one either, Heinrich took a year to get it, and went to Halmahera for the Invisible Rail as a bit of light relief. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:51, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

How do these look to you? Adam Cuerden (talk) 05:05, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Impressive. You get good DOF from your scanner. Only thing I can think of is there may be people who take issue with the black space around the cover. I don't think that's an issue, but you know how it is. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:21, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- I have to do a little faking - it gets these weird stripes as it goes further away from the scanner, but they're easily fixed with a little selective destripe/horizontal-only blur. The black background is basically a necessity of scanning. Adam Cuerden (talk) 05:32, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Definitely, but they may expect it to be cropped. You've done it before. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:36, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, but in that one, I literally had no choice: I was specifically asked whether I could include the edge, and had to explain I'd need a bigger scanner. Crisco, I think I've hit a limit on this nomination with the accusation of nitpicking. The C of E, to my reading of the sources, is not faithfully representing them in the quest to exceed the magic 1500 required by DYK. Some examples:
- History:
- Third sentence: the claim that this hymn differs from Bell's others because it's Celtic Christian (and, presumably, the rest of his output isn't) is unsupported in the source.
- Fourth sentence: it says "initially viewed", which seems unsupported, as is the assertion that it's a radical Christian hymn because of the uncommon words rather than because of the theology behind them.
- Composition and usage:
- Fourth sentence: I couldn't check the 2010 edition (page 51 wasn't part of the preview), but could the 2014 edition, which includes it but makes no recommendation that it be used as a recessional. (The cited 2010 edition may well have had a different suggestion.)
- Final sentence: phrases like "was mentioned in official reports" set off alarm bells, and the source (a joint publication by the Anglican and Methodist churches) is clearly talking about a series of workshops then planned for the Anglican-Methodist covenant, specifically in the context of the hymn's possible use during the first workshop while the attendees are praying or worshipping together, rather than during actual church services. The sentence gives the impression that it's far more than that.
I've been wondering since the beginning whether this was a notable hymn, and the errors with source material have been troubling. If I may, I'll leave this to you. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:58, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello! Your submission of WonderSwan at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! czar ♔ 23:02, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Rather than get into a 3RR with TParis, who just told me to "piss off", I'm heading over to you with this one.
The problem with this nomination from the beginning was that there was too much overlap between the general article on the billionaires and the individual year articles, and by DYK rules it was very clear that both could not run without running afoul of newness/expansion rules. I thought the solution I suggested was the best that could be accomplished, and ThaddeusB preferred the three (later five) individual years to the master article.
Just to note that if the master article's addition to the bolded articles stands, I will be insisting on a sixth QPQ. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:31, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- So long as he has paraphrased it a bit, I seem to recall there generally not being too much of an issue with articles written in the same period and on a similar topic having similar text. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:58, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- The articles were all by ThaddeusB: master article (the bulk of which is sections for each of the individual years plus tables for those years and many others) and individual year articles. My take—which was a second opinion after the original reviewer thought both shouldn't be eligible but wanted an additional viewpoint—was either you count the text in the master, or count it in the many individual years, but it shouldn't count for both, especially given how alike the texts were. But if you think it's okay, I'll demur despite the lack of civility. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:47, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Crisco, Soman has made a slight adjustment to the article text, and proposed an ALT1 hook. Can you return and see whether this satisfies what you were hoping for? Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:45, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Lembaga Sensor Film article
Hey, I hope you've been well. I caught this article published on the website of Lembaga Sensor Film which talks about the transition between politicians and celebrities. There's extensive discussion on Adnan Kapau Gani and Asmara Moerni. Note that the article also uses photos of the two lead actors that you uploaded for the article. I wouldn't be surprised if much of the information came from your work. I figured you'd be interested. :) —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 12:25, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
- Glad to see you back. That is interesting, and one of the reasons why I try to get this information (and these images) out there. Thanks for the link :-) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:31, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

FA congratulations
Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Union Films and D. Djajakusuma to FA status recently. I know you know all about WP:TFAR (specific and non-specific date slots) and the "pending" list, so this is just a reminder to use them as and when suits you. Many thanks. Just noticed that File:Soldierfly.jpg, an WP:POTD/Unused FP, also appears on Stratiomyidae, a non-stub article. I think it could be scheduled with this article. What do you think? Armbrust The Homunculus 10:56, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the DYK for Tintin
Hi Crisco, thanks for letting me know about the DYK for Tintin in Tibet; looks good! Prhartcom (talk) 12:13, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Glad you liked it. However, both yourself and Matty.007 deserve most of the praise for improving the article as much as you have. Good work! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:16, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Crisco, I don't know much about Featured Pictures, but can I email you a couple of pics to get your opinion on them? Thanks, Matty.007 11:56, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- Or post here, it's up to you. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:21, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- Once I put them on commons, there's no getting them down, is there (i.e. is there an equivalent to user requests deletion)? Thanks, Matty.007 12:47, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Okuribito
I've got the most pressing of my schoolwork out of the way (no more deadlines for the immediate future), and I'm only working half days for most of the coming week, so I've got no excuses for not getting to Okuribito. I'm going to a funeral today, but if you notice me neglecting it after today, gimme a ping. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 02:41, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've got a whole bunch of images to go through (a very profitable trip to five temples) so I may not be there immediately. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:05, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how much of this stuff I should be adding—feel free to cull anything you think is too much, or to reformat things the way you want them. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 00:06, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- The stuff I saw earlier looks good (though I haven't gone through your most recent additions yet). The DVD from Amazon arrived in Canada, so now it's just a matter of waiting for my mom to bring it to me when she visits for graduation in August. I've still got some RL work to do, but I'll be adding some more English sources this week hopefully. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:28, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Great! I can rework a bit (although I should note that several reviewers made a point of Takita making his debut in pink films). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:55, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

- Great. Still should be focusing on RL work, but I'll have a go later tonight. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:24, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Kota Kinabalu City Mosque
On 3 June 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Kota Kinabalu City Mosque, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque is home to a fish farm? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Kota Kinabalu City Mosque. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. RfC/U
Dear User as you know Director and myself experience often difficulties in communication. For this reason I have filed a RfC/U to discuss about this problem. I must confess that I genuinely believe he deals with me with improper language (inaccaptable, regardeless of the difficulties of communication we experienced). I did not file an AN/I because I would like to have a large discussion about this issue. And may be I am the guilty one. If you want to partecipate to the dispute as a "User who tried and failed to resolve the dispute" or "Additional user endorsing this cause for concern") you can do at 1. To avoid the suspicion of canvassing I am contacting all the users involved in the previous and present dispute. If you think I forgote someone please tell me. - I don't think I was active with images when VP was still around. That is... a shocking image. If we can get one that is less compressed, it might have a chance at FPC. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:34, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

- So would the image not survive an FPC in it's current state? It is overly white as it is but I can't see any other issue beyond that. GamerPro64 04:07, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Take a look at the area inside the window frame. Those blotches look like a poor Photoshop attempt. They are found in other areas, too. I don't think that one would have much success. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:34, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

I did notice them but wanted to be a bit optimistic. Ah well. Sometimes it's good to have a pipe dream once in a while. GamerPro64 05:08, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, that it is. Even better once we can realize them. It's possible a better scan of that image may show up, especially if it's part of the government collection. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:41, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- So I may have struck gold. I looked at the picture and saw that the National Archives and Records Administration may have a copy of it or something. So on a hunch I emailed them and checked to see if they had a copy of it. They said they didn't have one. However, they instead sent me this. Unfortunately it seems to be in TIFF. But it looks so much better than the last picture. They also gave me their publication statement and other stuff so I think I got something out of all this. GamerPro64 19:16, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- A TIF? That's not unfortunately ;) TIFs are a lossless format, meaning that, if the image needs restoration, we can do it without worrying about introducing JPG artefacts (like the Atari dig image). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:24, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I could clean this up. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:47, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- I've uploaded a quick and dirty crop of the tiff, with a few levels adjustments (posted here). A proper clean-up will follow. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:52, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Huh. Probably should have known that TIFs were all right. Thanks first year photography class. :/ But with that knowledge, I am excited for the final outcome. And hopefully there will be a more positive result this time. GamerPro64 01:48, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- There are just two issues with TIFs, which are why few people upload their images in that format: Wiki software doesn't support them as well (the thumbnails are not sharpened, I believe), and the files are huge. My TIF version of File:Banyunibo Temple, 2014-05-31 01.jpg is something like 500mb.
- I'll try and do some clean-up of the image later tonight my time. I've got to copyedit a friend's thesis first. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:57, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- I got you. I have the time to wait for changes to be made. GamerPro64 02:02, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

- GamerPro64, the restoration is up if you want to have a look. The image has considerable grain, though I'm not sure if this is owing to the photographer using fast film or if the scanned print was of low quality. I've tried to mitigate it a little, but I don't know how well I succeeded. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:18, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- After looking at the first image and the restored one, yeah I see that it has some graininess to it. But I don't think it's a major issue. Certainly looks better than the previous version. May actually pass an FPC. GamerPro64 20:03, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Well, we can give it a shot. Our images of Muhammad Ali and Manuel L. Quezon have some visible grain (though Quezon's image is much, much older). If you want to nominate, feel free. DYK deck-clearing
Crisco, I'm doing some more deck-clearing. I was hoping I could lean on your expertise here.
As you can see from Template:Did you know nominations/Konig's Westphalian Gin, I had problems with the article, which I felt was entirely too reliant on a single 1913 advertisement. Since then, Philafrenzy has added a new Background section. I'm not sure this is enough to "adequately deal with the topic", and am passing the determination over to you.
There are source discrepancies in Template:Did you know nominations/University of Mississippi Field Station, and I'm still puzzling over what needs to be done—the ALT hook may deal with a fact that is sourced, but other material in the article has contradicting source claims, and the nominator seems to have knowledge of the place.
The latest at Template:Did you know nominations/The Summons (hymn) is that The C of E basically ignored my edits both big (removals) and small (copyedits), and made what I felt were inadequate changes to his previous version, so I reverted him. It's only been four days since (with no action one way or the other), but the article is at 1077 prose characters. Do you think the hymn is notable?
Thanks as always for your help. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:35, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Your opinion...
I was thinking of nominating this for WP:FPC illustrating the main entrance into main quad and the pelican sundial. I've tweaked it a bit, but if there is anything you (or others) think should be fixed, I'm open to feedback. Many thanks.--Godot13 (talk) 17:43, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
- I think it's definitely worth a nomination. Good to see you've been contributing significantly to the Oxford College articles (which in general are not that well illustrated). I visited in the winter but it was not a particularly nice time of year to photograph the exteriors (plenty of building work, muddy grass and dull gardens) so I focused on the interiors, mainly the chapels and halls as they tend to be the most impressive buildings. Could you have a look at this? It had the impression that someone had wiped their arse on it, so I've done my best, but it could probably use a second person's go-over. Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:37, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
- "someone had wiped their arse on it"? Not sure about that, but there is a very sharp jump in the white gradient near the "P" star. It's in the original too, so I don't quite know what it is. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:54, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

On 6 June 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Merdeka 17805, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the film Merdeka 17805, about the fight for Indonesian independence, was described as a "two-fisted, hinomaru-waving, blood-and-guts ode to the soldiers who died for the glory of the emperor and for Dai Nippon"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Merdeka 17805. Eva Kuwailanimamao Cartwright, Daisy Napulahaokalani Cartwright, Alexander Cartwright III, Robert Kalanikupuapaikalaninui Wilcox, and Virginia Kaihikapumahana Wilcox were deleted a while ago when I was busy at school. I had no time to defend their deletions, although as of now I agree with their deletion so I have no desire to appeal for their recreation. Requesting images from living people
Hey, Crisco, since you're an image guy I thought I'd ask you (or ask you to point me to someone who knows better). What procedure would you recommend for requesting an image from a living person(s)? We're hoping to ask Megadeth for one, because we can't find a currently free one we're satisfied with. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 23:25, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
- Just to jump in here, I've emailed Megadeth's business manager, but so far I haven't received any feedback. I guess he doesn't have time to answer all of the fans' requests.--Вик Ретлхед (talk) 23:31, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not very successful when it comes to asking people to donate images... I think my only successes are with Mike Hoolboom, Robert Farrar (for his grandfather, Kenneth Horne), and Ucu Agustin (who happens to be friends with WikiMedia Indonesia's president). Watching more successful people like Sven Manguard, I've noticed that the really mainstream subjects rarely donate copyrighted images. For video games, it's usually indie companies. For musicians, it's usually more local acts. But Sven may have some ideas. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:40, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- Vic—I didn't realize you'd done that (or that you were stalking here!) I was just wondering if there were a particular apporach (form letter or whatever) that people had found successful. I'll ask Sven. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 01:52, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- There is a form letter, but I can't vouch for its effectiveness. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:59, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- If you're dealing with famous people, don't go to the person or to their business manager, go to their agent or publicist. That's the avenue I've found most successful. When speaking to their agent, it's important to frame it not as "this is good for the free culture movement" but as "the first picture that most people are going to see/associate with your client is the first one in their Wikipedia article. If you give us a high quality image of them, you get to ensure that the image people see is a good looking, up to date one." Then it becomes image management, and agents/publicists put a good deal of importance on that. It becomes a "help yourself by helping us" situation. Additionally, since celebrities tend to get more communications thrown their way than their agents do, it makes it more likely that your request will be seen. Sven Manguard Wha? 18:50, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- Err... just to be clear. I'm talking shop here. I definitely wouldn't cut and paste anything I just said into an email. It would need to be reworded for additional tact. Sven Manguard Wha? 18:52, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Mohon dijelaskan. Terima kasih. Banknotes
Hi Crisco-
There is a featured set of four notes that would work well for June 25th. This day is taken, but the several successive days are open. I don't know if there is any room to request if the author of the image would be willing to move by one day (unless of course they selected that day). Hawaii overprint note has a denominational set of four US banknotes specifically issued during World War II (on June 25, 1942) for circulation in the Hawaiian Islands. I would want to reduce the black borders, if permitted, without in any way changing the notes themselves. Just a quick first idea looking around trying to link the notes to significant days.--Godot13 (talk) 04:59, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- That's just a random date, so I can reschedule the insect for the 26th. How about a rotating set of the four, instead of making a montage? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:06, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Like we did with Princess Ida. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:06, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- That's what I figured we were talking about. Is it okay to re-crop the images to remove black space without touching the notes themselves or should they be left alone?-Godot13 (talk) 05:11, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, that's allowed. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:13, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Done. Three of the four have been tweaked for spacing only, looks more uniform as a set now.--Godot13 (talk) 05:44, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Alright. I'll arrange that... tonight or tomorrow, maybe. I'm populating a category right now. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:23, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Finally watched it
Overall, I enjoyed it, but I just can't get over the scene where Mika confronts Daigo over the job and threatens to leave him, and he stands up for the job—at that point of the movie I just can't buy that he'd developed such pride and attachment to the job. He'd only been in town less than two months and was still learning the ropes—somehow I get the feeling that some motivation was left on the cutting room floor. And the bit with the father felt kinda tacked on. Some trivia—the father's café was called "Concerto". Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 13:01, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm... that adds further charachterisation to the father. Yes, in retrospect the film could have worked without the father issues, and reviewers haven't focused on those as much (for some reason), but overall I found it enjoyable. At least better than most of what comes out of Indonesia. Still trying to hunt down a copy of Murudeka though. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:06, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Good luck. I have no idea how popular it was in Japan, either.

Reza Ghorbani
Greetings. It seems back in 2013 you deleted an article with this title. Someone has recreated the page and submitted to the AfC page. I reviewed it and was going to approve it, but could not. On the AfC talk page, someone directed me to you, it seems you have admin protected it, and that's the reason I can't. You might want to take a look at it: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Reza Ghorbani. Perhaps I'm wrong in thinking it's ready for approval, I am kind of new to this. Regardless, if you could let me know, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Onel5969 (talk) 00:50, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- First (and a minor point): NawlinWiki protected the page, not me, but if the article met the concerns of the old AFD then I would move it. Second, I'm not quite sure the article is there yet. Most of the citations here are not in-depth coverage of Ghorbani in independent sources, but rather first-party sources (Tufts Magazine, related to his university; Truceuticals, LLC., which he chairs) or him being quoted in the media (The Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post). There's also a small POV issue, but that's easily fixable, and more stylistic than content-related. Owing to the past controversy surrounding this article, it would be nice to have another one or two in-depth sources on him. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:03, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry about that... the link provided me seemed to indicate it was you. But aside from bothering you, thank you so much for your input. I'm trying to feel my way here and make a contribution where I can. If it's all right with you, I'm going to steal your points up above and decline it again, but ask the editor to address those points. Onel5969 (talk) 01:43, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- Glad to help. Just to clarify, the POV issue I mean is the consistent use of "Dr" and symbols such as "TM", which is against WP:CREDENTIAL and MOS:TMRULES. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:03, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- I would say that the draft still looks very promotional, with citations to PR releases and a big blurb for his "neutraceutical" product line. NawlinWiki (talk) 12:06, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Re:Advertisements and the main page
I understand why it may be best to have a structured discussion about it at a later date- I certainly wouldn't want to see the promotion held back because of main page concerns. I don't see anything wrong with the political advert, which has a degree of historical interest which is (currently) absent from the Dustforce video. This is the important thing, I think, rather than the "product" being no longer available. I seem to remember that we have a very old Coca Cola advert, but I don't mind that, either. Again, the historical interest is there, which means that it's appropriate for the main page in a way that the Dustforce video, for me, is not. J Milburn (talk) 16:03, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Queue 4 edit needed
Crisco, EEng posted rather cryptically about an issue in WT:DYK; it turns out it's about the Sonderdienst hook wording. I agree that it's problematic (and the same phrase is in the article), but I can't figure out how best to untangle it (and couldn't do anything about it if I could). Can you please take a look when you get the chance? (There's at least a day before it's promoted.) BlueMoonset (talk) 16:57, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
- I did look at it, and I couldn't think of a smooth yet more accurate phrasing. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:16, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Featured list question
Hey Crisco, I have never tackled a featured list, but realized there is potential to develop one with the eleven American Triple Crown race horses, but not sure if 11 is too few for a featured list. Also wondering if Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing (United States) is already a list or if I should create a new one. Thoughts? Montanabw(talk) 00:59, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
- Montanabw, Eleven is borderline (or are you also including all competitors?), but since the competition is still being held there's definitely the possibility for a stand-alone list. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:04, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
- There are only 11 so far and might be a long time before there's another. The first was in 1919, the last - so far - was in 1978. We damn near had one Saturday, except the horse next to him biffed him in the leg coming out of the gate and so he finished fourth. I plan to include material on owners, trainers, jockeys, possibly info on # of horses in each field that they beat, etc. Further thoughts? Montanabw(talk) 18:37, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi can you delete all these user pages and their talk pages for me. I don't think I plan to edit them anymore and I still find them all over the edit and searchable by people on the internets. - Thanks Hafs, I think the one that stands the best chance is The Judgement of Paris, but considering the current climate I don't want to nominate any nudes just yet. I've been holding back on Olympia as well. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:57, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

- I know, but I really don't want to strike up any more drama. Once the discussion's been closed down for a week or two, then I can schedule the Manet. Paris can follow (or you can nom, if you can get past the elephantitis image). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:02, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Indonesian Anime/Film Studio vandal strikes again.
Sorry. Long time, no write. I have to report this address to you because, I've just the discovered that the notorious Indonesian Anime/Film Studio vandal has resurfaced and is now using the address 118.137.149.40 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) for three times in the last 30 days. Can you block this address for a long time? Again, he's a problem for at least less than one month, but I've just discovered that he's active again through a recent revision of his vandalism. Same kinds of articles, BTW (including that of Maleficent). Thanks in advance! - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 00:59, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Doesn't seem to be active right now, but if he starts again ping me and I'll be right there. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:07, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- To be clearer, considering the editing pattern (yesterday was the first time in two weeks the IP had edited) a block might not do much. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:07, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Looks like I was right; no edits in four days. S/he wouldn't have even noticed a 24 hour block. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:50, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Question
Doesn't this look like an exact copy of this? The copy looks like it has the same photo number but it was cut off at the right side and is missing the 1974 Columbia copyright text. Thanks, We hope (talk) 11:36, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- Agree. Copyvio, sadly. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:41, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

I think File:Into the Jaws of Death 23-0455M edit.jpg could probably be scheduled despite the previous version appearing twice on the Main Page, because
- the previous appearances were more than eight years ago,
- none of the had the article about the photograph (Into the Jaws of Death) as the bold link and
- the image is significantly different than the previous version.

DYK prep promotions
Crisco, I'm not sure if you're likely to drop in again before the next (currently empty) queue would need to be promoted in about 100 minutes, but three preps are ready for promotion, and even one would get us past the next deadline (though we've already had the dreaded bot notice to the DYK talk page). Thanks for anything you can do. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:18, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
Okuribito no Okuribito
Hey, Crisco, I just got Okuribito no Okuribiro in the mail. Supposedly used, but in perfect condition—the spine's so stiff, I don't believe anyone's ever opened it. It's much more in depth than I thought it would be—not on the movie itself, but on background stuff, like the setting, nôkan stuff, a Takita bio, the winning of the awards, etc. It'll take me a while to work this stuff in. A problem: you've got a total of 38 awards for the list, but the book claims (right on the cider) that there were 69. There's no list of them in the book, but hopefully they're each mentioned somewhere in the text. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 10:35, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Mengapa ketika saya melihat di atas halaman pembicaraan abang hari ini, tombol yang ada simbol segitiga hitam terbalik (yang memberikan pilihan pemindahan), berubah menjadi simbol yang sama, namun ada tulisan "More"? - The stain over "America" appears to continue into the floorboards as well, at least at thumbnail. Sadly I'm not doing FPC-quality uploads at the minute. More like "Images we can find nowhere else" uploads. A couple of the better quality ones (I was photographing, not scanning, and pretty rushed. At least they gave me permission) are below. There's more coming right now, from another issue of Film Varia... Dunia Film's printing had much lower quality, as is evident here. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:21, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- Oh, that stain used to go all the way up, very visibly. I know there's still a little to do with it, but, at this point, only visible in the floorboards is actually a huge improvement. I love those images, by the way; If the negatives existed, I'd say they're featureable like a shot, even without, we may be able to get a selected few featured, if there's a good arguement to have. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:15, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'm uploading an image of Dhalia which I think is really good (still another half hour to go, as I'm uploading 30 images at once). As I've said before, I'm not very good at removing halftoning, but the image is reasonably sharp at 1500px... will post it here later. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:32, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Dhalia in a promotional still for Lewat Djam Malam
- If you could get a better, uncropped copy of the Bakar Tak Berapi, I'd consider that FP quality. It's authentic low-res, after all. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:11, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- Owing to my hurry (and the lack of proper equipment) it ended up curved pretty bad (I can upload a less drastic crop if you want to check it out), and the printer didn't give much room at the edge of the ad. The ad for Si Melati (also a redlink) turned out a bit better. There are a few other ads that I haven't uploaded yet (Penjelundup (1953), Lagi-Lagi Krisis (1955), Si Dudung (1956), Sedetik Lagi (1957); the one for Penjelundup may have possibilities, although I'd hate to see how Commons' "This is not free in the US, but we don't care about the URAA" goes over at FPC). None of these are on my immediate "to do list", however, as each digitized issue takes an hour and a half to go through and another half hour to upload (or more)... blasted Indonesian internet. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:31, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Grovelling on bended knees ...
Well, here I am as usual pestering you to see if you can help and do me a big favour - would it be possible to crop to the bottom right corner and tidy/clean this image? Someone already tried it here but it is of very poor quality. It's for possible use in the Kelpie article, which is at FAC at the moment. - I did add the cleaned up version of the image to the Kelpie article - but having looked at it constantly throughout the day, I still didn't feel it was of good quality. I eventually managed to find an 1890 line drawing that I've now used instead (hopefully the license is okay and I've marked it correctly). FP: Romain Rolland:
Hi,
I'd like to nominate these, but could you give me some advice please? Should I nominate them as a set, or only one of them? In this case, which one? Thanks, Yann (talk) 08:25, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not at home right now, and I don't trust this monitor for judging such issues. However, the second image still has a bit of a border on the upper viewer's right side. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:32, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- Adam suggested I ask you about the grid pattern on these. See c:User_talk:Adam_Cuerden#Restoration:_Romain_Rolland. Regards, Yann (talk) 13:59, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I can see the lines on my home monitor (as well as a little bit of dust etc., but none of that detracts from the image all that much). That's definitely on the print, not a scanning artefact (nothing on the ID number). Too regular to be a collotype (but I'm sure Adam would have recognised one)... our images in Photozincography have a similar pattern, but that appears to have been out of use by 1910... removing them shouldn't be much of an issue, I think — Crisco 1492 (talk)

Teknologi suara d film Indonesia
Sore, om Woodrich.
Ini, sy dapat sedikit dokumentari, bhw rupanya suara sdh ad d film sejak tahun '40-an. Kedua, diketahui org Belanda tahun '40-an sdh tau bikin film ada suaranya. Ketiga, sy membaca artikel Wikipedia karangan om Woodrich ttg film Indonesia taun '40-an kok masih hitam-putih?
Sound-on-disc digunakan sebelum-sebelumnya. Soal film warna, memang produksi lokal oleh orang Indonesia sendiri baru muncul tahun 60-an (tahun 1950-an ada film warna oleh rumah produksi Indonesia, tapi selalu bekerja sama dengan negara lain seperti Filipina). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:40, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
PotD for the worm?
So my annelid diagram passed FP candidacy, despite my early misgivings (yay!). Any chance I could get it in the queue for PotD? It would mean a lot to see it there. Let me know. Thank you for your support and help!
- KDS4444, our first open slot is 5 July, although I'd probably put this around 10 or 11 July to allow space between this and the mouse diagram. Thoughts? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:04, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- Ooooo, there's a mouse diagram coming up?? I should be paying closer attention! Yes, by all means, give my worm a few days' margin: July 10th would be just fine with me. Let's put in stone. KDS4444Talk 09:52, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

DYK
I'm not if you transferred it to the prep area (I assume you did since it says you promoted it) but the hook for Template:Did you know nominations/George Luther Kapeau from December, 2012 was changed from "that Hawaiian governor Kapeau's actions toward the Catholic priests of Kailua and King Kamehameha III's refusal to dismiss him was one of ten reasons French Admiral Tromelin invaded Honolulu in 1849?" to "... that after Hawaiian governor Kapeau sent tax assessors in 1849 to the Catholic priests of Kailua, and King Kamehameha III refused to dismiss him, French Admiral Tromelin invaded Honolulu?", which makes absolutely no sense. I'm surprised I didn't catch it until now. Is there anyway to correct this in the DKY records this late now. Thanks
- I don't think I edited this in prep or queue, although personally I think the version which ran was clearer. Where are you thinking of editing the blurb? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:41, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Hey, my laptop's fucked (I'm in the middle of reinstalling the OS now), so I haven't been able to do much editing today (I'm on my phone now). I just noticed you added that filming took place between March and May 2007. Mou Hitori no Okuribito says filming started in April 2008 and lasted 40 days (p. 199), and elsewhere in the article we have Sakata Location Box forming in December 2007 to secure locations and extras. Also, it says the film was screened in 36 countries (Mou Hitori agress), but then in the same paragraph it says it was scheduled for release in 30 countries. If there's a differences between "screening" and "release", then that should be made clear for the dunces like me who don't savvy the lingo. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 08:55, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- 2007 was a typo, sorry, should be 2008. I'd rather use Mou Hitori if necessary, as Takita may have misspoke. 30 countries nixed, as that was out of date information. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:06, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, it says they shot some snowy scenes in Sakata in 2007 (doesn't give a month), and then the main filming took place from April for forty days. And I made a mistake: it wasn't four cities, I missed the など ("etc"). Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 09:17, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- Alright. I'll still be working on this for another hour or so. The archives of The Japan Times are pretty good, so I'll go through those. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:24, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- 98 awards! Obviously somebody's keeping count, but where are they keeping the list? I'm surprised I can't find an official site for the movie. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 09:44, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- The official one in English is archived; not sure about the Japanese one. There must have been one... maybe what now passes for an official site is on Shochiku's website. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:30, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

What do you think of....
...this Yankee Stadium photo by Carol Highsmith? It's a bit fish-eyed, and has the qualities of cheap 1980s film, but the stadium was rebuilt since, and it shows a lot more of the context. Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:51, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- Fisheye is fixable, although we could probably run it as-is and still get through FPC. Tomorrow's POTD Algol
Hi, Crisco. I'm approaching you first since you appear to have written the caption. I'd like to strongly urge you to remove the reference to astrology. Giving it equal billing with astronomy in this context is imo very ill-considered. I see you are on break, so unless I hear from you, I intend to edit the caption myself. If you do see this in time, please, please, refrain from adding to the popular confusion over astronomy and the idiotic superstition astrology. You've always seemed a sensible guy . . . Awien (talk) 23:59, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- Well, someone got it (when you sent that message I was... probably about 35km from home and still on the road). I had included as astrology has had a significant cultural impact (even though the confusion between it and astronomy is a pain in the ***), and thus is part of the social impact of the star (i.e. what makes Algol more significant than, say, 7 Piscium); perhaps it's my background in the humanities speaking, but for me that kind of thing can be important without necessarily being valid in a scientific sense (for me, it can be compared with the poppy as a symbol of remembrance in several countries; botanists couldn't care less, but that doesn't make the information any less encyclopedic for Wikipedia). The blurb did differentiate between the two; linking both may have been clearer, but I had hoped that our readers were smart enough to not need that. No issues with the blurb as it is now, however. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:20, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- And of course I miss that I was looking at the history of the non-protected version. *d'oh*. I'll link the two terms, as there doesn't seem to be consensus to remove the bit altogether. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:43, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

- For instance, "It took 13 months from completion to get it released" in The Hollywood Reporter has to be a mistranslation—I refuse to believe Takita himself actually misremembered that badly. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 01:10, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah... and yet several of our English sources give the same information. Are there any names of numerals in Japanese that resemble thirteen (say, "thirty" in English [you wouldn't believe how common it is here to mix the two up])? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:22, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- My guess is (a) the English sources are quoting each other (it's pretty obvious that's what was happening with some of the Katsudou Shashin "facts") (b) it may have been "weeks" rather than "months", and (c) it may have been 13 months from beginning of production rather than finishing. I haven't come across the number thirteen in the sources Ihave yet. I'd love to see the original Takita quote. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 10:19, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- A is a definite. 13 weeks is ... 3 months? That would give June-ish for completion... possible. Don't know what measure they'd be using for "the beginning of production". Takita was apparently signed up in 2006, so 13 months from his signing is definitely out. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:23, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Can I just say that this is amazingly useful, and lets you skip the whole UploadWizard for big files, - indeed, it works better? Only issue is that it has to start from a file page, and you MUST change the destination name BEFORE hitting browse and going to the file. Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:50, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'll have to look into that when I get home. That would have helped with the Shirley Temple film I uploaded shortly after she died. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:05, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Daniil Zharkov
I request that Daniil Zharkov be restored because significant new information has come to light since its deletion that would justify recreating the deleted page. The subject the deleted article is a professional major league ice hockey player. The conclusion of the AfD was that this article could be recreated when/if he meets NHOCKEY or otherwise achieves notability. Daniil Zharkov now meets the criteria for a stand-alone article pursuant to the WP:NHOCKEY guidelines as he played 49 games in the KHL[3] this past season. Dolovis (talk) 18:30, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Reconcerning The Jakarta Post
Greetings from Hong Kong. I am sorry if this make a mess on your trip. Just two questions:
- In the article mentioned above, it's said that "English favouring the active voice and direct statements, while respectful Indonesian favours the passive voice and a circuitous approach." Do you remember there's a man point out that the translation is very eerie and inappropriate, thus opposed the GA attempt made for the Chinese translation for the article mentioned above? He also questioned above the translation of this sentence. He argues that in this situation, "respectful Indonesian" means elegant/prestigious way of Indonesian writing. But I have noticed an article about the televised debate between Mr. Joko Widodo and Mr. Prabowo Subianto by Lianhe Zaobao, a Singapore-based Chinese paper. In the article, it stated that a typical style for a Javanese to speak is humble, just like what Jokowi did. So, I think that it is quite contradictory between that man's comment and the article's content. I prefer to adopt the article's speech, i.e. "respectful Indonesian" = "humble way of Indonesian writing".
- In the same article, it quoted the speech of Mr. Jusuf Wanandi: "You cannot bullshit in English, like the Javanese way." That man argued again, this time point out the word "bullshit" means chatting, not lying nor having a bad intend. Do you agree with his comment?
I would like to talk about these issues and being grateful if you can give advice on it. Thanks, Spring Roll Conan ( Talk · Contributions ) 10:24, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hi 春卷柯南, perhaps #1 could be answered with a translation such as "Indonesians showing respect" or something similar? Zanhe has a better understanding of the nuances of Chinese, so they might be able to help. As for "bullshit", here it is neither "lying" nor "chatting"... as I read it, "bullshit" is using a certain phrasing to imply that you'll do something, but not doing it (a favourite tactic of Indonesians who want to stall... "akan dikerjakan" ("it will be worked on"). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:43, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- For the issue 1, I tends to use the explanation provided by dictionary, but it may be better to get a third party advice. For the second issue, I've checked again, and finds that the original translation of the phrase "bullshit" means "boasting", "lying" or "chatting", and the revised translation only means "chatting". For the meaning of not doing what he promised to do, there are several idioms on it, roughly translated as "what one say and do is not the same" and "saying, then not fulfill the promise". However, as I know, they are used as adjectives. If the original translation (boasting/chatting/lying) is used, it may makes contradiction, as I have translated the word "respectful" as a Chinese word means "humble". Hope it will giving more useful information on these problems. Thanks again, Spring Roll Conan ( Talk · Contributions ) 11:00, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: Boenga Roos dari Tjikembang (novel)
This is a note to let the main editors of Boenga Roos dari Tjikembang (novel) know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on July 3, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at present, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/July 3, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:
Boenga Roos dari Tjikembang is a 1927 vernacular Malay-language novel written by Kwee Tek Hoay. The book follows a man who leaves his beloved concubine so that he can be married; eighteen years later, he discovers that she had been pregnant, and takes responsibility for his daughter's marriage. The novel has been interpreted variously as promotion of theosophy, a treatise on the Buddhist concept of reincarnation, a call for education, an ode to concubines, and a condemnation of how such women are treated. Inspired by the lyrics to the song "If Those Lips Could Only Speak" and Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the book was written as an outline for the stage drama troupe Union Dalia before being published as a serial in Kwee's magazine Panorama. By 1930 there had been a number of stage adaptations – some unauthorised. The work was filmed in 1931 by The Teng Chun and then in 1975 by Fred Young. Though not considered part of the Indonesian literary canon, the book ranks amongst the most reprinted works of Chinese Malay literature, and is Kwee's most popular publication. An English translation by George Fowler, titled The Rose of Cikembang, was published in 2013. (Full article...)
You (and your talk-page stalkers) may also be interested to hear that there have been some changes at the TFA requests page recently. Nominators no longer need to calculate how many "points" an article has, the instructions have been simplified, and there's a new nomination system using templates based on those used for DYK suggestions. Please consider nominating another article, or commenting on an existing nomination, and leaving some feedback on your experience. Thank you. UcuchaBot (talk) 23:01, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Scanning tips?
Hey, I'm no master scanner, but I'd like to upload some stuff to Commons (and hopefully do it right). Can you give me any tips for this scan? It had a pale yellow background (not part of the original image) that I got rid of by setting the contrast at 96 on GIMP. My scanner does 4800dpi, but even at 1200 my little laptop was starting to heave and sweat, and it took a while to open in GIMP—though with all the fine hatching I'd sure like to scan it higher-res. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 08:45, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Whoa, that's going to some veritable extremes there. Adam Cuerden does much better scans, so maybe he'd have an idea. My "scans" are more often than not photographs, with the usual issues (curvature, for one). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:06, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm. Can I see the raw file? It may just be that the contrast adjustment is too much, when, say, a saturation adjustment would have given better results. Adam Cuerden (talk) 09:38, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Here. I tried another higher-res one with the image more centred and with a stack of harcovers on top of it to keep it flatter here, but I think this one came out crookeder. Curly Turkey ⚞¡gobble!⚟ 10:23, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

- I don't think I could retake it, but I could probably do something. Doing some CPU heavy stitching right now though. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:18, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- OK, if we can make it acceptable... Hafspajen (talk) 16:35, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- Do you think I shall draw back the nom? Hafspajen (talk) 13:42, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
- No, I'll get on this now... not quite done what I was doing, but it's okay. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:52, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
- THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hafspajen (talk) 10:49, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Glad you like it. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:14, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Gambar mengenai Semarang
— Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:27, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Oh, dan foto dari luar Semarang ada Candi Umbul, Candi Asu, dan Candi Pendem. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:29, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Heinrich
I've had a look at the existing article. It's a largely unreferenced machine translation dealing exclusively with his Ichneumonidae work. 29k, but half is a comprehensive list of (only) his insect works, which will have to go. It leaves out the interesting stuff. He was invited to join the Red Baron, started a long affair with his wife's 16-year old sister (although the three lived and collected together)... and later the governess. Authoritarian and inflexible, he was both brave and lucky. He retrieved his blacksmith from an SS extermination camp, despite having had to pull strings to get his own name taken off the death list.
Can we use the image here under Fair Use, since he's dead? Presumably we then put ichneumon, bird and other relevant pics in the text. Most of the biographical stuff can be referenced to the The snoring bird if necessary. Any other thoughts?
- We could, but wouldn't a photograph of him in the field have higher EV? I'm sure I've seen one somewhere... one of the articles I read for invisible rail, maybe? Can't do much writing just yet, as I have a large number of images I'm trying to process, but I'll try and do something when possible. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:28, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
A cropping
Sigh, now what kind of cropping was that. What I meant that the picture should end exactly above the thiny line of the pole, and the rest of the foliage should be in the picture. That means like half of the foreground cropped away, exactly above the pole's topp. Wish I could crop, then I could have shown you that it will work very well... Hafspajen (talk) 10:30, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- I decided to crop out the power line entirely, since having only a little bit of it in the image would have been just as distracting. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:15, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, you are right. You can put the crop exacly above the (or on) the power line. Hafspajen (talk) 12:23, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Ooh, David! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:34, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, AND we don't have one good picture on this absolutelly iconic scupture. Oh, start soon chewing the wires on my computer (disappointment...) Hafspajen (talk) 12:46, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- I know. Blast. At least the Mona Lisa was scanned well. BTW, have you seen the images I'm uploading (above)? There's at least one that's FP quality already uploaded, and I still have more to go through. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:50, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Yes, the Interior of Blenduk Church (both) are my great favourites. Like the exterior of Blenduk Church too... What is wrong with this picture. Hafspajen (talk) 13:00, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- The ISO is at 800, with a shutter speed of 1/500... definitely unnecessary. Should have been ISO 100, shutter speed something like 1/50 or 1/100. Even handheld that should have been an easy shot. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:03, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- All those amateurs. So there you go, a good sculpture and sculptor, no good picture. Hafspajen (talk) 13:05, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- No, at thumbnail size it's quite reasonable, and Guilherme (the photographer) appears to have done some pretty good work. I'm guessing he wasn't aiming for sharpness at full resolution. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:10, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Is that a - skirt? Hafspajen (talk) 13:49, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'm sure the Italians have a name for it... I don't. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:52, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Or maybe I do. Could this be a fustanella? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:56, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hm. It could be... A more military style-fustanella... Hafspajen (talk) 14:00, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- What do you think of this? I stopped, because I am not sure of the quality. Hafspajen (talk) 14:08, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- I think I'd go for something with more focus on the pumpkin itself. Odd how don't have any decent pictures of pumpkins — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:10, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- All those amateurs. So there you go, a good sculpture and sculptor, no good picture. Hafspajen (talk) 13:05, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- I mean the picture quality. I don't think it might meet the standard. In that case you might just delete it... Hafspajen (talk) 14:14, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Didn't look at the quality, owing to the composition... I doubt that would get much support at FPC. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:49, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Haha, that was funny... (your correction). Ok, will you please delete it? Hafspajen (talk) 14:54, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Gone. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:29, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, well one problem less. What do you think of the pope? Hafspajen (talk) 15:37, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Replied at Ceoil's talk page. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:40, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

What, no comment?
I was hoping you'd have something to say in response to my suggestion by now. I realize you might have good reason not to change things. Anyway, if you do want to respond, please do so on that talk page, not here or on an IP address talk page. --The former 69.158.92.137, now 70.49.171.225 (talk) 21:27, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

- Considering the comment was 9 days ago, that's not much of a reason. Sorry I missed this; I was rather busy with RL. I'll take a look. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:46, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Img needs protecting
I substituted the img per someone's request at Talk DYK [4] but someone needs to protect the image -- it's now moved from prep to Q. Also, I'm not clear that the flickr page from which the original uncropped img was taken actually carries appropriate licensing. EEng (talk) 01:18, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- Will protect. The license on Flickr is just above the other images in his feed. It has two symbols (those for CC-BY and CC-SA, meaning this is CC-BY-SA) and "Some rights reserved" (i.e. BY and SA). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:23, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- Nix that, already protected by the bot on Commons and by cascading protection on Wikipedia. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:27, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- Interesting. I guess you have to attempt to edit it to find out it's "frozen". EEng (talk) 01:37, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- Perhaps. Odd how the fact that the page was protected didn't show up until I clicked "edit". — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:41, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
