Invite to the African Destubathon

edit

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 55 African countries, so should be enjoyable! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African wildlife articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance. If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing any article related to a topic you often work on, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Might be a good way to work on fleshing out articles you've long been meaning to target and get rewarded for it! Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:55, 13 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Diannaa, the source is in CC BY 4.0 licensed. More visible here. What I copied are identification keys and location which can't be altered to something else. I checked Wikipedia:Plagiarism#Copying_material_from_free_sources, Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright#Can_I_add_something_to_Wikipedia_that_I_got_from_somewhere_else.3F, Wikipedia:Adding open license text to Wikipedia and I didn't see a problem though I learned attribution need to be improved. Could you explain what the issue here? Note that I had created one more article before getting this notice. Will wait from editing further util things get clarified. Jee 03:24, 15 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jkadavoor. Sorry for the mistake. I did look for a license on the document but didn't see it, as the font is so tiny on the PDF. I've added a statement that says that the document is compatibly licensed and a statement that indicates to our readers that you copied the prose rather than wrote it yourself. If you could do the same in the future when copying from compatibly licensed material that would be great. In fact it is required under the terms of the CC-by license. You can do it manually like I did or use a template {{CC-notice}}. Thanks, and sorry again for the mistake. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:23, 15 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Diannaa; I will try to ensure it in future. Its a new info for me. Thanks! Jee 13:27, 15 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Copying within Wikipedia requires proper attribution

edit

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Elymnias hypermnestra into Elymnias caudata. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was moved, attribution is not required. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 21:33, 20 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Diannaa. I had already mentioned "Some text copied from Elymnias hypermnestra". The additional text "Please see the history of that page for full attribution" seems good. Jee 04:57, 21 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for the oversight; your initial edit summary was indeed adequate. I don't know how I missed it. (Adding the phrase "Please see the history of that page for full attribution" is still a good idea) — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:07, 21 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

My recent edits

edit

Jeevan, I've been editing a bunch of things you recently added and wanted to let you know why. The main thing I've been targeting is the use of "Lepidoptera Perhoset Butterflies and Moths" as the title of the website Lepidoptera and Some Other Life Forms. What you had is from here, which is the name of the order in Latin, Finnish and English. Also I've been correcting peoples names. I've never seen an English name where the last name is initials; so for instance it would be "|last=Evans |first=W. H." rather than the reverse.

If you've got any questions about the changes I'm making, please let me know. By the way, nice userpage. Thank you and keep up the good work.  SchreiberBike | ⌨  05:43, 1 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Diannaa, thanks for your notes. But IUCN doesn't contain any "own contents"; they are just reproduction of texts from original authors. In this case they are from Fraser 1924. I can't see the deleted texts though. Jee 12:44, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
Fraser 1924 is not yet in the public domain, so it's not okay to copy it here. I am not sure why you can't see the deleted text, as revision deletion has not yet been done. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 12:47, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
Diannaa: OK; I saw it now. I'm not sure; but works listed at Fauna of British India are owned by British India and considered in PD. New works by Zoological Survey of India are also free to reuse per GODL. But I will take care to rewrite in own words as much as possible. Jee 12:56, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
Works need to be in the public domain both in their country of origin and also in the United States, because that's where the Wikipedia servers are located. Best to use your own wording wherever possible — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:06, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Tree trunk spiders are members of the family Hersiliidae, native to tropical and subtropical parts of the world. Ranging from 10 to 18 mm (0.4 to 0.7 in) in length, they have two prominent spinnerets that are almost as long as their abdomen, earning them another nickname, the "two-tailed spiders".

This picture shows a tree trunk spider of the genus Hersilia, photographed in Kadavoor in the Indian state of Kerala, capturing a cicada. The spider lies in wait on a tree for an insect to land on the trunk. Pouncing on its prey, it uses its spinnerets to wrap it in silk. When the insect is immobilised, the spider bites through the shroud before sucking out the insect's juices.

Parthenos sylvia, commonly known as the clipper, is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in forested areas of southern and southeastern Asia. This butterfly, photographed in Kerala, India, is puddling in a film of shallow water at the edge of a stream. Puddling is a behavior whereby butterflies, and some other insects, suck up fluids from mud, carrion, excrement, or rotting plant material, in order to fulfil their physiological needs for certain minerals and amino acids. When the conditions are suitable, butterflies commonly form conspicuous aggregations on wet soil, and some species are also attracted to body fluids such as sweat or tears.

The wire-tailed swallow (Hirundo smithii) is a small passerine bird in the swallow family, found in Africa and southern Asia, and often seen flying low over water. It has bright blue upperparts, white underparts and a chestnut cap; adults have long filamentous outermost tail feathers, which trail behind during flight, but juveniles lack these.

This pair of images shows an adult wire-tailed swallow feeding a perched juvenile with insects it has caught in flight. The juvenile opens its bill ready to be fed, and the adult thrusts a beakload of insects into the juvenile's mouth.

Papilio polymnestor, the blue Mormon, is a species of swallowtail butterfly found in southern India and Sri Lanka. It is a woodland species, often seen on forest paths and near streams. The larvae feed on trees in the family Rutaceae, such as citrus. Young larvae are green with white markings and position themselves on the upper surface of leaves, relying on their cryptic colouring, which resembles bird droppings, for protection. Older larvae seek less conspicuous locations, and have a unique habit of securing their balance by weaving silk on the substratum. This adult male P. polymnestor butterfly was photographed in the Indian state of Kerala.

Purana tigrina is a species of cicada found in Southeast Asia. This adult male was photographed in Kadavoor, Kerala, in southern India, and is about one inch (25 mm) in length. The mouthparts are adapted to piercing plant tissues and sucking sap; the male abdomen houses the tymbal, an organ used in the production of song, while the female abdomen is tipped by a large, saw-edged ovipositor.

Attacus taprobanis is a species of moth in the family Saturniidae native to southern India and Sri Lanka. This adult male, photographed in Kadavoor, Kerala, developed from a larva feeding on a mahogany tree. When ready to pupate, the larva formed a papery cocoon 7.5 cm (3 in) long interwoven with a leaf; before doing this, the larva had attached the leaf to the stem with a silken thread and cut the leaf stalk. The colours of the dying leaf provided camouflage for the pupa, and the adult insect emerged some 24 days later.
